Local athletics club brings home six medals
Kwa-Thema – Langaville Athletics Club has a new home at Kwa-Thema Stadium.
The club recently came back with six medals from the third league of the CGA's 2025 cross-country season at the Dobsonville Multi-Purpose Centre.
Among the stars, Zanele Mzizi won gold in the 3km for the U14 girls.
'The stadium is better situated for our training. The facility we used before did not have tracks. This was an issue because when we go to compete at different stadiums our runners would not know how to stay on course.

'Now they will train within the lines, and I believe that we will get better results when we compete,' explained coach and founder Sakhi Kgapola.
Kgapola admitted that the stadium could be in better condition.
'We have some challenges with overgrown grass and there are no lines on the track. We hope that the facility will be refurbished to the best standard, in order to give the athletes the best chance at winning,' he added.
The club will participate in the fourth league of the CGA 2025 cross-country season at Marivate Park, Daveyton on the June 28.

R10 000 Youth Day tourney
LIMPOPO – Youth Day was celebrated in style on Monday at N'wamankena village with a vibrant sports tournament that brought the community together and showcased local talent across various sporting codes. The event, held to commemorate June 16 Youth Day, featured competitive matches in male and female soccer, as well as netball, drawing crowds from surrounding villages and other areas across the Greater Giyani municipality who came to support and cheer on their favourite teams. The highlight of the day was the thrilling male soccer final between N'wamankena FC and Shimawusa Homeboys FC. Favoured by homeground advantage, the home team, N'wamankena FC, triumphed with a 2-1 victory, securing the tournament's top prize of R10,000 to the delight of local supporters. In addition to soccer, netball and female soccer matches were played throughout the day, contributing to an atmosphere of excitement, unity, and youth empowerment. According to the tournament organiser Jay-jay Rikhotso, the tournament aimed to not only honour the legacy of the 1976 generation but also to encourage the youth to stay active by engaging in sports and avoid substance abuse. 'This was more than just a tournament; it was a celebration of our young people and their potential. The tournament aimed to take the youth off the streets and re-focus their attention on sports,' explained Rikhotso, one of the organisers of the event. 'With the increasing challenges faced by youth today, including substance abuse and lack of recreational activities, we felt it was important to give them a platform to express themselves positively through sport.' He added that the turnout and enthusiastic participation from teams and spectators alike were encouraging signs that the initiative had a real impact. 'And so far, it looks like we've managed to do just that. We're truly grateful to all who supported this initiative; from the players who gave their all on the field to the community members who came out in numbers to cheer, and of course, to our sponsors whose contributions made the tournament possible.' Rikhotso also used the opportunity to remind the community that plans are already underway for the next tournament. 'We hope that you will be able to join us again when we host our Good Friday tournament next year. With your continued support, we believe these events will keep growing and make a lasting difference in the lives of our youth,' he said. The tournament was a winner-takes-all event, which concluded with a prize-giving ceremony that included a R10 000 cash prize, trophies, and medals. Choosing the right career for you The Rocking Future career expo stopped at Curro Salt Rock last month, equipping pupils with valuable insights for their future careers. Hosted at schools across the country by 3RC, the Rocking Future series is free for both schools and pupils. It aims to broaden teenagers' understanding of career possibilities beyond traditional paths. In addition to public tertiary institutions, the expo features smaller private colleges and niche education providers, helping ensure every pupil can explore options aligned with their unique interests and aspirations. In 2024 alone, Rocking Future reached nearly 25 000 pupils across the Western Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, including those at Curro Salt Rock, which hosted the event on May 13. For more information, visit Battling for Youth Day glory Maphumulo's young soccer and netball stars showcased serious skill at the district's biggest annual junior sports tournament on June 14 and 15. The Mzurayza Ingwenya Foundation Youth School Tournament, held in conjunction with Youth Day on June 16, drew widespread support from local schools. Bukhosini Primary School took the junior soccer honours, while Sakhisizwe High School matched them in the senior division. Darnall Primary, Melmoth Primary, Maidstone Primary and Umhlali Prep all travelled to Mandeni to compete in U9, U11 and U13 matches. A special U14 rugby game between Mandini Academy and the KZN Development Team also thrilled the crowd, as did a combined performance by the Soweto and Mandini Field Bands. 'After just four weeks of training, it was amazing to see our learners play brass instruments as well as the marimba,' said Mandini Academy principal, Desigan Pillay. 'Mandini Academy has partnered with the Field Band Foundation and incorporated the teaching of musical instruments into our extra-curricular programme, as well as into our Creative Arts and Life Skills curriculum.' Singing with one voice More than 600 school choir members joined forces to deliver sonic joy at Curro Salt Rock earlier this month. The 'Melodic Waves' event drew choirs from junior and high schools from across the province to perform for a packed crowd. The highlight of the event, however, was the grand finale when all the pupils sang as one to create a unique and memorable performance that thrilled the audience. 'The magic of hearing more than 600 learners sing as one was simply indescribable,' said Curro Salt Rock executive head, Sean Friedenthal. Over R1 million raised for charity at Oceans 8 swim event in Durban
Hundreds of swimmers descended on Durban for the highly-anticipated Oceans 8 Charity Swim. The camaraderie and community spirit resulted in over R1.1million raised for 14 local KZN charities. More than R1.1 million was raised for 14 local charities at this year's Oceans 8 Charity Swim, held over the Youth Day weekend on the Durban beachfront. Around 250 swimmers took to the ocean between June 14 and 16, participating in four swim distances, the 1, 4, 8, and the newly introduced 16-mile challenge with proceeds supporting organisations working in conservation, education, and community upliftment. Race organiser Hilary Bruss said the event was guided by a deep sense of community and purpose. 'The safety and wellbeing of our swimmers is always our top priority. With the north-easterly bringing in bluebottles early on Sunday, we are grateful to all participants and service teams for their flexibility and understanding in using the contingency day. It is a privilege to swim in the ocean, even when nature has other plans.' Bruss added: 'We're deeply grateful to everyone who played a part, from our safety crew and volunteers to every swimmer and supporter. Congratulations to all our top achievers and especially to those who took on their very first ocean swim.'
