R10 000 Youth Day tourney
The event, held to commemorate June 16 Youth Day, featured competitive matches in male and female soccer, as well as netball, drawing crowds from surrounding villages and other areas across the Greater Giyani municipality who came to support and cheer on their favourite teams.
The highlight of the day was the thrilling male soccer final between N'wamankena FC and Shimawusa Homeboys FC. Favoured by homeground advantage, the home team, N'wamankena FC, triumphed with a 2-1 victory, securing the tournament's top prize of R10,000 to the delight of local supporters.
In addition to soccer, netball and female soccer matches were played throughout the day, contributing to an atmosphere of excitement, unity, and youth empowerment. According to the tournament organiser Jay-jay Rikhotso, the tournament aimed to not only honour the legacy of the 1976 generation but also to encourage the youth to stay active by engaging in sports and avoid substance abuse.
'This was more than just a tournament; it was a celebration of our young people and their potential. The tournament aimed to take the youth off the streets and re-focus their attention on sports,' explained Rikhotso, one of the organisers of the event.
'With the increasing challenges faced by youth today, including substance abuse and lack of recreational activities, we felt it was important to give them a platform to express themselves positively through sport.'
He added that the turnout and enthusiastic participation from teams and spectators alike were encouraging signs that the initiative had a real impact.
'And so far, it looks like we've managed to do just that. We're truly grateful to all who supported this initiative; from the players who gave their all on the field to the community members who came out in numbers to cheer, and of course, to our sponsors whose contributions made the tournament possible.'
Rikhotso also used the opportunity to remind the community that plans are already underway for the next tournament.
'We hope that you will be able to join us again when we host our Good Friday tournament next year. With your continued support, we believe these events will keep growing and make a lasting difference in the lives of our youth,' he said.
The tournament was a winner-takes-all event, which concluded with a prize-giving ceremony that included a R10 000 cash prize, trophies, and medals.
'We would like to thank everyone for ensuring that the event ended peacefully and without any incidents of violence,' he added.

The previous champions – Israel Adesanya, Sean Strickland, Robert Whitaker and Du Plessis – made sure the fans got what they paid for, putting up exciting displays of mixed martial arts, even when the fights went the distance. Chimaev – who has a reported 10 million followers on Instagram – is an extremely popular figure, but even he was booed by the sold-out crowd in Chicago on Sunday. The middleweight division is extremely stacked with plenty of exciting talent coming through the ranks – Du Plessis being on that list, and he's sure to be back contending again – but the question now must be, can anyone stop this Russian? At the end of the day, it is the fans who make or break sport, and if they aren't happy, then you have a problem.

Helpmekaar, Manzomtombo win big at Kay Motsepe Schools netball nationals
Helpmekaar Kollege and Manzomtombo Secondary School from Mfuleni will jet off to Singapore after winning the Kay Motsepe Schools Netball Championship national finals in Rustenburg on Saturday. The competition, sponsored by Sanlam in partnership with the Motsepe Foundation, took place at the Konka Family Adventure Resort, with 36 schools representing all nine provinces in the U15 tournament. The schools were split into two groups, Botho and Ubuntu. As stream winners, Helpmekaar and Manzomtombo both won a trip to Singapore, where they will compete in the annual International Youth Netball Challenge in November. The silver medallists from both streams each walked home with R200,000 and bronze winners received R100,000. Gqeberha schools Pearson and Framesby finished 16th and 17th respectively Tanja Saestad, coach of Johannesburg's Helpmekaar, said she was thrilled with her team's success at the national event after they won the Botho stream by beating Middelburg Hoërskool in the final. 'It's seven months of incredible hard work. I am very proud of the girls,' Saestad said. 'I am more relieved today than anything else. I think the win will kick in tomorrow, but I am very excited. 'I am also excited about the trip to Singapore. 'International exposure is valuable for any player and I think just the experience, even off the court, will be amazing for us.'

Sunrise FC shines in Women's Day tournament
The community recently came together to celebrate and honour Women's Day through a soccer tournament. The two-day tournament hosted by Richard Khoza, leader of Makubephi FC, which also participated, brought together 16 teams from eMalahleni to the Elandsfontein ground, which all battled hard for the awesome prizes. The teams brought their best performances since the start of the tournament on August 9, but Sunrise FC was left to compete against PSG Rox in the finals after they had secured wins against Tarmady FC and Youthville, respectively, in the semi-finals. Sunrise FC asserted their dominance with a 2:0 win, winning for themselves a trophy, gold medals, R10 000 in cash, while the PSG FC received silver medals and R4 000 in cash. The tournament also featured a game between the Sbobo Ladies and the Makubephi FC Ladies, who also had some fun in the field. Lihle Sibeko, the tournament organiser and sports organiser of Makubephi FC, stressed the importance of men coming together to encourage and educate one another on how to love, care, and protect women to end Gender-Based Violence.
