CM inaugurates excavation in Lakkundi
Gadag: With the inauguration of the excavation of the historical site Kote Veerabhadreshwara Temple in Lakkundi by the chief minister,
Siddaramaiah
, on Tuesday, hopes of getting crucial clues have multiplied among history enthusiasts of the state and nation as well.
Meanwhile, the Lakkundi Heritage Area Development Authority is preparing for an open museum on the lines of Warangal in Telangana.
CM Siddaramaiah said that the govt is committed to establishing an open museum in Lakkundi. "This village, Lakkundi, was the capital of the Chalukyas, who constructed temples and a fort here. Remnants of these structures have provided historical information. We provided the required funds to unearth historical structures and artefacts, and that is why conservation became possible here," he claimed.
He attributed law minister HK Patil's interest as the reason for launching an excavation in Lakkundi. He thanked the residents of Lakkundi who transferred their land and houses, where relics were found, to the govt.
It should be noted that Lakkundi is one of the 844 sites notified for protection. Govt departments like tourism, archaeology, museums, and heritage organised a special campaign between Nov 22 to 24 last year to collect relics from the doorsteps of villagers.
The campaign collected over 1,500 relics, and they will be displayed in an open museum of 4 acres. The govt announced funds for the museum in the current year's budget.
A team of experts already visited Warangal and opined that a museum better than the one in Warangal can be established here.
According to Patil, who is also in charge of Gadag district, Lakkundi villagers are very cooperative with the excavation. "Experts have said that if 27 families leave their houses, five temples can be traced.
Most of the house owners agreed to give up their properties, and we will provide alternative accommodation to them," he shared.
Meanwhile, the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) conducted a study and submitted a nomination to get a world heritage tag for Lakkundi. The govt is mulling submitting a request to the International Council on Monuments and Sites to add Lakkundi to the world heritage temporary list.
Gadag residentse believe that Lakkundi could become a bigger world heritage site than Hampi if it is excavated and developed properly. The previous excavation was in 2004-05 in Lakkundi, and various important relics were found then.

Bengaluru stampede: Sidda's political secretary sacked
Bengaluru: The political secretary of Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, K Govindraju, has been sacked, and the state intelligence department head, Hemant Nimbalkar, has been transferred over the Bengaluru stampede that claimed 11 lives. Govindraju is also the head of the state Olympic association and the key person who pressured the Chief Minister to hold the RCB victory event at Vidhana Soudha. The Karnataka government has taken several steps in the wake of the unfortunate incident, including the filing of FIRs against the representatives of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). A political row has also erupted in the state with the BJP accusing the Congress-led state government of making the police a 'scapegoat" in the incident. Hitting back, Siddaramaiah on Friday criticised the saffron regiment for politicising the stampede at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The CM stated that action was taken against officials who were found to be 'visibly responsible" and 'negligent in their duty." 'They are doing it for politics. I don't do politics. We have taken action against those who were visibly responsible and found to be negligent in their duty," he said.

RCB, event firm execs held as K'taka shunts out CM's aide to quell anger
Four executives, one from Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and three from an event management firm, were arrested and chief minister Siddaramaiah's political secretary was ousted on Friday as the Karnataka government moved to fend off criticism over the deaths of 11 fans during chaotic celebrations for RCB's Indian Premier League (IPL) title victory earlier this week. The police arrested Nikhil Sosale, in charge of RCB's marketing and revenue — who moved the Karnataka high court against the action — and DNA Entertainment Private Limited executives Sunil Mathew, Kiran Kumar and Sumanth R. Police had booked RCB, DNA and as well as the state cricket body for culpable homicide, unlawful assembly and assault on Thursday. Another first information report (FIR) was filed against the three organisations following a complaint by Rohan Gomes , 25, who survived the chaos, which also injured 56. However, the high court restrained state police from taking coercive action against top officials of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). As the political backlash grew, the Congress government removed chief minister Siddaramaiah's political secretary K Govindaraj and also transferred additional director general of police (ADGP), intelligence, Hemant Nimbalkar on Friday. The government did not reveal the reasons for their removal. However, people aware of the matter said Govindaraj was removed followed criticism of his reported involvement in the event. Govindaraj denied any involvement ahead of his removal. The Opposition BJP and the JD(S) jointly lashed out at the Congress government, saying police officers were being made the 'scapegoats' for the tragedy and alleging that the entire responsibility for the incident lies with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar. Karnataka BJP general secretary P Rajeev said he has filed a police complaint seeking legal action against Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar and Home Minister G Parameshwara. Shivakumar accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of 'politicising dead bodies', as the opposition party in the state blamed the government for the mayhem. 'They (opposition) are trying to do politics over dead bodies. We are not doing it. We have do they have to target me? In what way am I responsible?' he said. The tragedy occurred on Wednesday afternoon as hundreds of thousands of people thronged the Chinnaswamy stadium. The RCB team landed at the HAL airport at 2.45pm, and were received by Shivakumar. The first felicitation ceremony was organised by the state government at the Vidhana Soudha around 4.30pm. The 11 fans, mainly students or young IT professionals, died after they were caught in the crush at the gates . The first deaths were reported around two ambulances were present and 1,318 policemen were deployed, the government told the high court on Thursday. In comparison, around 5,000 were deployed for the 2024 World Cup victory parade in Mumbai. The crush led to four deaths at Gate 7, two at Gate 6, one at Gate 1, and four more between Gates 17 and 21, the government told the court. At a press conference on Thursday, Siddaramaiah ordered the arrests of representatives of the organisations booked by police, announced a judicial probe and said that five police officers, including the city's top cop B Dayananda, were suspended. On Friday evening, a city court in Bengaluru sent the four arrested men to 14 days' judicial custody. The high court will hear Sosale's plea challenging his arrest on June 9. 'A few arrests have been made. Ultimately, the case has to go to CID. So before that, whatever legal formalities have to be done by our team are being done,' Bengaluru's new police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said. Gomes, 25, in his complaint, said that he reached Gate 17 after seeing social media posts by RCB indicating that the tickets will be issued at the venue and that entry would be allowed without a ticket. He also alleged that RCB publicised a victory parade in an open-top bus. Sosale's lawyers, in his petition, argued that he was detained solely on the basis of an oral directive from the chief minister, without a preliminary inquiry or investigation. 'The Petitioner's arrest is motivated and an attempt to shift the blame of the tragedy to RCSPL and its officials,' the plea said, referring to Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited, the company that owns the franchise. KSCA, meanwhile, argued that it had no operational role in the event and merely rented the stadium to RCB's management company. It claimed RCB, through DNA, bore full responsibility for managing the entry and exit gates. It further alleged that the cricket body was being scapegoated to deflect criticism away from government leaders who had facilitated a separate ceremony at Vidhana Soudha earlier in the day. Granting KSCA officials interim protection from arrest till June 16, Karnataka high court judge justice SR Krishna Kumar directed that no 'precipitative action' be taken against KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam, who are among the accused named in one of FIRs registered by police over the tragedy. The court however, directed the petitioners to cooperate with the ongoing investigation, and barred them from leaving its jurisdiction. (With PTI inputs)

Stampede deaths: Outrage over missing political accountability as ministers go scot-free
Bengaluru: The govt is facing a storm of criticism over the absence of political accountability for the stampede at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium which claimed 11 lives. Though the govt suspended three IPS officers and transferred another, mounting public outrage and opposition fire has centered on the fact that no minister has been held accountable for clearing Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL celebrations. At a press conference Friday, NDA partners BJP and JD(S) demanded the resignation of chief minister Siddaramaiah , his deputy DK Shivakumar, and home minister G Parameshwara. They accused the govt of making scapegoats of police officers while absolving themselves of responsibility for the tragic incident. "Congress' high command should think about sacking both Siddaramaiah and his deputy and bringing in new faces," said union minister HD Kumaraswamy of JD(S). "They and their supporters were jostling to secure political mileage from RCB's victory celebrations." He alleged that while Shivakumar was away attending a court case in Kanakapura, K Govindaraju, the CM's political secretary, "goaded him into holding celebrations on the grand steps of Vidhana Soudha". "When his media adviser alerted him about this, the deputy CM rushed to receive the cricket team at HAL Airport. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Device Made My Power Bill Drop Overnight elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Pre-Order Undo The tragedy unfolded from there," said Kumaraswamy. BJP state president BY Vijayendra lambasted Siddaramaiah, saying, "Bengaluru's police commissioner has been made the scapegoat in this entire episode. In the FIR, DNA (event management firm), RCB and KSCA have been named. In truth, accused No 1 is the chief minister himself, accused No 2 is deputy CM and accused No 3 is home minister G Parameshwara. Their sheer carelessness and negligence led to this tragedy. Despite deaths, Siddaramaiah went to a hotel to eat dosa, while Shivakumar participated in the victory celebration at the stadium. This is so insensitive." Opposition leader R Ashoka said: "The CM wants to hit a century by completing his full five-term, while the DCM wants to run him out. But, in the process, people of Karnataka have been out hit wicket." Kumaraswamy demanded a judicial inquiry by a sitting high court judge and said BJP would consider pushing for a special legislature session. Amid the growing backlash, Siddaramaiah defended the govt's response. "They (opposition) are indulging in politics. I don't want to politicise this. We penalised those who were visibly responsible and found to be negligent in their duty," he said. Shivakumar said: "Let them (BJP) demand (my resignation). They are trying to politicise the issue over dead bodies. My chief minister was kind enough to announce a judicial inquiry. Action has been taken against some. An investigation is underway. The case has been handed over to the CID. What more can the govt do?" Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Eid wishes , messages , and quotes !
