Rivalry billing for Euros tie may mean more for Wales – England's Alex Greenwood

A win against their fellow home nation – the lowest-ranked team in the tournament – would be enough to book defending champions England a place in the quarter-finals, while newcomers Wales would require a victory of four goals or more, as well as France beating the Netherlands.
Greenwood's cool demeanour and downplayed approach to the opposition was in direct contrast to Wales captain Angharad James, who, when sat at the same St Gallen table moments before and asked if she wanted to knock England out, said: 'Of course you do. It's in our blood. It's in our DNA.'

But quizzed as to whether or not she felt the same sense of rivalry, Greenwood conceded: 'Maybe not as much. I think, for me personally, it's another game.
'It's now the most important game that we're going to play and I think that's how I look at it, that's how I treat it. I think for the fans and everybody around it, the rivalry is brilliant.
'I think the atmosphere tomorrow is going to be great and something we should all look forward to, but from a personal perspective, it's another really important game.'
Greenwood reached a century of England caps in their tournament-opening 2-1 defeat to France, and added: 'Playing for England has always been a dream of mine since I could kick a ball and I think to make 100 caps for your country is generally something I never thought I would achieve.
'I'm really proud of doing that and really grateful for the people who helped me along the way.'
"Not many players get to say they've played 100 times for their country and I'm really grateful to everyone who has been a part of it."
Congratulations, @AlexGreenwood, on an incredible career milestone! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🩵

Wales do have a precedent when it comes to showing up against England, holding the Lionesses to a frustrating goalless draw in their 2018 World Cup qualifier.
At the time, then-Wales manager Jayne Ludlow said it was probably the best result in their history and the current side are eager to write more of their own with what is likely to be one final opportunity in Switzerland.
Both Wales skipper James and head coach Rhian Wilkinson said 'the pressure is all on England', leaving some wondering if Wales were trying to get in the Lionesses' psyche.
'Maybe, I don't know,' replied England boss Sarina Wiegman. 'But we have our own preparation and we know also what's on the line and we will do everything to win the game because we want to get through.
'There's always pressure on England, but we make it expectation. We expect from ourselves that we are going to play a good game.'
Dutchwoman Wiegman, who led the Netherlands then England to the European trophy in 2017 and 2022 respectively, revealed she had also been undertaking a little research.
'Yeah, I learned a little about the history and about the rivalry,' she said. 'But we focus on what we have to do and how we want to play and find a way to win.'

Man Utd transfer news: Ollie Watkins' feelings clear on move as another striker ruled out

Manchester United have turned their attention to Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins as they look to sign a centre-forward in the summer transfer window for Ruben Amorim Manchester United are determined to sign a striker before the Premier League season begins. Ruben Amorim has already been given much-needed attacking reinforcements in the summer transfer window, but there's still a missing piece of the puzzle. ‌ Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have arrived for a combined fee of £133.5million, but United are in real need of more goals. Cunha scored 15 goals in the Premier League last season for Wolves, while Mbeumo struck 20 for Brentford, yet neither are comfortable as a No.9. ‌ That is where United have been trying to find a new player. But with no European football to offer targets, having finished a lowly 15th last season, they missed out on Liam Delap to Chelsea, Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool and Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal. ‌ All is not lost yet. The summer transfer window remains open until September 1, but Amorim is preparing for their opening Premier League game against Arsenal on August 17, when his old Sporting Lisbon player Gyokeres will be unleashed against him. Here are the latest transfer stories from Mirror Football involving United. Watkins keen on Man Utd move Ollie Watkins is Manchester United's No.1 choice in their pursuit of a centre-forward, Mirror Football understands. Benjamin Sesko has been considered, but the RB Leipzig striker isn't considered as good an option as Watkins, who is an experienced Premier League striker. United are, however, unwilling to pay Aston Villa's £60m valuation for the England star. Instead, they hope to negotiate down to around £40-45m for the 29-year-old forward. One of the things in their favour is that Watkins is understood to be keen on the move. While he has been an important player for Villa in recent years, he has clashed with Unai Emery over selection in the Champions League and would undoubtedly be the main man at United, where rotation would be less of an issue. Dortmund emerge as Sancho option Jadon Sancho had appeared to be set for a move to Juventus, but a third spell at Borussia Dortmund is now thought to be a serious possibility for the winger. Sancho is part of the bomb squad at United, having been told he has no future at the club under Amorim's management. ‌ He had agreed terms with Fenerbahce last month, before that move collapsed. Next came Juventus, with the Italian side thought to be close to signing the 25-year-old for £21.6m. According to reports, United could now flog Sancho to Dortmund for £15-17m, giving him a third spell at the club. Sancho made his name in Germany initially, joining United for £73m on the back of his form there, and also spent time on loan at Dortmund in 2024. Jackson off the cards ‌ Manchester United won't be signing Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea this summer. Jackson is exploring his options after the arrivals of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap left him contemplating a season on the bench. United held talks with his agent, but Chelsea's asking price has put them off. The Blues floated the figure of £100million, with an actual valuation of £80m still way too high for the Senegal international, who has a typically ludicrous but classic Chelsea contract expiry date of June 2033. Watkins is now United's No.1 target, with Sesko another option. United have spoken to Sesko's agent, but he is younger, more inexperienced and has no Premier League experience.

Reports: Whitecaps closing in on deal with Thomas Muller

July 30 - The Vancouver Whitecaps are finalizing a deal to sign former Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller, according to multiple reports. Vancouver's next step in closing the deal, which would be its highest-profile signing in team history, is to acquire Muller's discovery rights. Discovery rights allow MLS clubs to negotiate with players outside of the league, and prohibit other clubs from negotiating with the player. FC Cincinnati currently hold Muller's discovery rights, but the World Cup winner reportedly declined an offer to join FC Cincinnati in April. Per The Athletic and ESPN, Vancouver is close to finalizing a trade for the discovery rights, in exchange for $400,000 in General Allocation Money. Muller, 35, played 17 seasons for Bayern Munich of the Bundesliga. He tallied 250 goals, 756 appearances and 33 trophies -- including a pair of Champions League titles and 13 league titles -- during one of the most illustrious tenures in club history. The attacking midfielder and forward also notched 45 goals and 131 caps for Germany. The Whitecaps (13-5-6, 45 points) are second in the MLS Western Conference right now, sitting one point behind San Diego FC for the conference lead. --Field Level Media

July 30 - Las Vegas is set to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw, according to an ESPN report on Tuesday. Sources told the outlet that the date of the draw would be Friday, Dec. 5 and that Las Vegas was selected over cities in Canada and Mexico. FIFA officials have not confirmed the date or site. For the first time, the competition will take place in three countries and will feature 48 nations, as opposed to the traditional 32. Las Vegas' Allegiant Stadium was rejected as a host venue. Eleven United States cities/venues were selected, along with three in Mexico (Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey) and two in Canada (Toronto and Vancouver). The U.S. sites are divided into three regions. New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, Miami and Atlanta are a part of the Eastern region, Kansas City, Dallas and Houston comprise a part of the Central Region, while Los Angeles, Seattle and the San Francisco Bay area make up three of the four cities in the Western Region. The draw will reveal the dozen groups with four nations per group. Mexico (Group A), Canada (Group B) and the United States (Group D) have already been selected for their groups. MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., will host the final match on July 19, 2026. Las Vegas hosted the draw in 1994, the last time the World Cup was held in the United States. The modern Sphere, which has a seating capacity of over 17,000 is the front-running venue to host the evening, according to sources. --Field Level Media
