CHINNAI: In recent years, Lebanon has endured hardships due to the conflict in West Asia, which has had a significant impact on the country. The unrest has also severely impacted the growing surfing community and slowed down the progress of a sport that is still in its early stages. Surfing has encountered numerous challenges, with surfers finding it difficult to train amid the turmoil. Despite the obstacles, the community remains deeply connected to surfing, not just as a sport, but as a vital part of their identity. Alfred Badr, who is the most experienced surfer in Lebanon's men's team in the upcoming Asian Surfing Championships here, shared how the country is coping with the challenges and keeping the sport relevant. 'Unfortunately, this (challenge) is part of our culture, so we always deal with it in a way by surfing. There were restrictions on certain places where we could not go but at the end of the day, we keep on pushing and always find a way to keep surfing. We are here to show our skills and to show people that no matter what, we can do good in the water,' the 40-year-old Badr, a graffiti artist, told TOI . After securing a quota for the Asian Games last year, Lebanon were unable to participate in any competitions due to inadequate funding. However, the team members made sure to stay fit by training whenever possible. Christopher Dirany, who has over a decade of experience in surfing, described what the sport means to him and his compatriots. 'Surfing is like my escape route and therapy from daily life, the stress of the daily life that we have. So, whenever you are in the water, you disconnect and all you think about is where the next wave is, where I am going to do the next turn. 'With the tough situation that we have in Lebanon, the surfers have to go to work and travel. In our country, we have to pay to enter the beach and this is something which is not practical for all. So, imagine you have to pay every single time you want to go and surf,' Dirany said. Badr chipped in, saying, 'The ocean is supposed to be free for everyone. So, that is part of the challenge that we kind of face.' While it is difficult to find a good beach and surf, Badr feels that it is not the main issue as there are other problems which need to be looked after. Asian Games prep: SAI forms 3 martial arts committees
Representative image (Photo by) NEW DELHI: Aiming to maximise India's medal prospects at the Asian Games in Japan next year, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has formed three committees to oversee the preparations and selection of athletes in three martial arts disciplines — karate, kurash and jiu jitsu. The move was necessitated as the sports ministry does not currently recognise any of the national federations for administering these sports. The Karate India Organisation (KIO), Indian Kurash Association (IKA) and Ju-Jitsu Association of India (JJAI) are affiliated to their respective world bodies but have not yet been granted recognition as NSFs by the ministry. For karate, the SAI appointed D K Mittal, executive director (regional centre Guwahati), as chairman along with eight other members including those part of the technical conduct committee. For kurash and jiu-jitsu, Abhishek Singh Chauhan, director (regional centre Bhopal), was named chairman with eight other members on the panel. In an official circular issued by SAI – a copy of which is with TOI – the core responsibilities of the committees include 'handle the selection of athletes, conduct coaching camps for participation in international competitions among others. UP leads in sports push, over 500 athletes get jobs: CM Yogi Adityanath
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said the state has emerged as a national leader in offering government jobs to medal-winning athletes. He was addressing the concluding ceremony of the two-day state-level wrestling championship organised at the Gorakhnath Temple on the occasion of Nag Panchami. Adityanath said that over the past eight years, Uttar Pradesh has witnessed significant development in sports infrastructure at the grassroots level, including the construction of playgrounds in villages, mini-stadiums at the block level, and full-fledged stadiums in districts. "Simultaneously, the state has introduced attractive cash rewards and employment opportunities for athletes excelling at the national and international levels," he said. Highlighting the state's achievements, Adityanath said: "Over 500 medal-winning athletes who have brought laurels to India and Uttar Pradesh in events such as the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and World Championships have been given government jobs. "UP leads the country in this regard," he said in an official statement. He also lauded the contribution of Uttar Pradesh Police athletes in helping India secure a third-place finish in the Police World Championship. Drawing from India's ancient ethos, the chief minister emphasised the importance of physical well-being and said sports are one of the most effective means to ensure physical fitness, which should be integrated into daily life. When a young person pursues sports professionally, they not only uplift themselves but also bring pride to their family, society, and the nation, he said. Adityanath also acknowledged the long-standing tradition of organising wrestling bouts at the Gorakhnath Temple during Nag Panchami, calling it a centuries-old practice that has now become a major platform for young wrestlers from across the state. He also watched the final bouts of the championship and distributed prizes to winners and runners-up across three categories.
