So how does that momentum build?

Cue the latest disruption for the fan base — another Apple TV game on Friday when the Jays open a three-game weekend series against the Texas Rangers and interest, one that arrives when interest in the first-place team is arguably as high as it has been in a decade for a regular season game.

The timing is never great for the Apple TV interruption, but for three of the four Jays appearances on the streaming service certainly could be seen as rally killers for Canadian TV audiences.

The first appearance came on the opening weekend of the season, essentially robbing Sportsnet of a potentially massive prime time Friday night audience.

Another Apple TV date came immediately after the Jays had finished up a sweep of the New York Yankees to seize first place in the American League East.

And now this. This is not a knock on the Apple TV production, it needs to be said. The slickly produced shows are designed to attract a younger audience and are not only mandated to do so but have paid for the rights in a national deal with Major League Baseball.

As well, the Jays fan base is not the only one to endure the interruption of their regularly scheduled baseball programming — it's a league-wide thing.

But with the Jays as hot as they are right now — and following the electrifying effort of starter Max Scherzer and the dramatic Vlad Guerrero Jr. home run for Thursday's win to take two of three from the Cubbies — it would have been a virtual lock that Sportsnet would have drawn well over a million viewers on Friday.

It has to be particularly frustrating for Sportsnet execs, given the undeniable buzz and momentum around the team right now, storylines that are well told on the broadcasts. The Apple TV crew will be all over the narrative of the Jays elevating from a last-place team to one with the best record in the American League and no doubt chronicle the recent Guerrero heroics.

Jameer Nelson Jr. scored a playoff record 39 points to lead the visiting Calgary Surge to a thrilling 105-103 victory over the Vancouver Bandits in Canadian Elite Basketball League action today in Langley, B.C. Evan Gilyard II who finished with 29 points, scored the winning points in Target Time as the Surge won the Western Conference semifinal and advance to championship weekend in Winnipeg. With the Surge on the precipice of elimination, trailing 103-102 with a target score of 105, the Bandits were called for a foul on Gilyard II who was shooting beyond the three-point arc. That sent Gilyard II to the foul line for the three most pressure-packed free throws of his career and he made them all, sending the Surge to Winnipeg next weekend. 'I love our team,' Canales said. 'I absolutely loved our championship poise … that's our standard, that's our culture. The coaches are already preparing for Winnipeg. We need two more (wins).' The Bandits got a huge shooting game from Zach Copeland, who had 30 points and three steals. Mitch Creek and Tyrese Samuel chipped in with 25 and 22 points respectively. Calgary swept the Bandits three straight during the season, largely due to the dynamic duo of Nelson Jr. and Gilyard II, and early Saturday, it was more of the same. Nelson had seven and Gilyard II 12 points in the second quarter. The Surge were firing on all cylinders, building a 10-point lead at the half that felt as if it could have been more. The Bandits fought back in the third, and after an 8-2 run early in the fourth, found themselves in possession of a 96-95 lead. Just before Gilyard II's winning free throws, the Bandits appeared poised to snatch the victory but a referee review ruled no foul on what would have been two free throws to reach the target score of 105. Nelson Jr. and Gilyard II combined for 68 points Saturday after combining for 54 to propel the Calgary club past the Edmonton Stingers earlier this week. Next up for the Surge is a Friday night matchup with the Winnipeg Sea Bears. The winner advances to the CEBL final against the winner of the eastern final showdown between the Scarborough Shooting Stars and defending CEBL champions the Niagara River Lions. Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler on injured list with blood clot in right arm
The Philadelphia Phillies placed ace Zack Wheeler on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a blood clot in his right arm. Dave Dombrowski, the team's president of baseball operations, said following Saturday's 2-0 loss to the hometown Washington Nationals that Wheeler had been diagnosed with a "right upper extremity blood clot." "There's not a lot that we can say on it at this time," said Dombrowski, who commended doctors for finding the clot. "It could have been a much more trying situation than it is." Phillies head athletic trainer Paul Buchheit said Wheeler had been feeling better after some right shoulder soreness caused him to push back a start earlier this month. But that changed Friday. "He felt a little heaviness," Buchheit said. "So, the doctors here were great in helping to diagnose and expedite that diagnosis this morning." Buchheit said he didn't think Wheeler's present condition had anything to do with his previous stiffness. He said there is a wide variety of treatments available but declined to get into specifics. Dombrowski said Wheeler would be evaluated further in Philadelphia. Wheeler pitched for the National League East leaders on Friday and was limited to five innings for the second consecutive start. The right-hander allowed two runs and four hits at Washington. 'Scary situation' The 35-year-old Wheeler, who made his third all-star team last month, is 10-5 with a 2.71 earned-run average in 24 starts this season. He has a major league-high 195 strikeouts in 149 2/3 innings. He has thrown at least 192 innings in three of the previous four seasons. Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber said it was most important to get Wheeler back healthy. "It's a scary situation, right? … Just want to get him back in here and hear from him," Schwarber said. "Hopefully it's not going to be too serious. Get him in here and get him healthy. "You know, baseball is baseball, and when it comes to someone's health like that, we need him healthy first. You know, he's got a family, so we want to get him feeling good for them and get him back to speed whenever we can." The Phillies will activate right-hander Aaron Nola from the injured list to start Sunday against the Nationals. Philadelphia planned to go to a six-man rotation with Nola's return, but instead will stick with a conventional five-man approach. "Because we're adding Nola tomorrow, everybody's getting sort of getting an extra day," manager Rob Thomson said. "Then we have an off day [Thursday], and we get another extra day. We're in good shape and that's why you have depth." "We don't know the timeline," Thomson said. "I'm thinking a lot about Zack and his family, because it's not a hamstring injury or something like that. But I feel good about the depth that we have. If we have to go to a sixth, it could be [prospect Andrew] Painter. It could be somebody else. We just have to carry on."
