American Airlines pulls 2025 forecast as Trump tariffs cause demand uncertainty
American Airlines withdrew its 2025 financial forecast on Thursday, mirroring its peers, as concerns over discretionary budget amid tariff pressures and government spending uncertainties hinder carriers' ability to predict travel demand. U.S. President Donald Trump's trade policies and sweeping tariffs have sparked a global trade war and raised the odds of the world spiraling into recession, making customers hesitant to spend on travel. The economic downturn is creating headwinds for major U.S. airlines, which, just two months ago, were benefiting from strong travel demand and solid pricing across their networks. With travel being a discretionary expense for many consumers and businesses, airlines are grappling with uncertainty around future travel demand due to unpredictable consumer behavior in a potentially deteriorating economy. On Wednesday, Southwest Airlines, the largest U.S. domestic carrier, withdrew its financial forecasts for 2025 and 2026, citing industry-wide volatility reminiscent of the COVID-19 era. Wall St rallies on tariff optimism, Trump eases Powell threats Smaller rival Alaska Air also scrapped its profit outlook for the year. American Airlines is also reeling from higher costs associated with expensive labor contracts signed last year. The legacy carrier reported a net loss of $473 million, or 72 cents per share, for the quarter through March, compared with a loss of $312 million or 48 cents per share, a year earlier. It had earlier forecast an annual adjusted profit per share of $1.70 to $2.70. The airline reported a total operating revenue of $12.55 billion, down marginally from a year earlier. Shares of the carrier were marginally down in premarket trade.

Who is Lucy Guo? Youngest self-made woman billionaire surpassing Taylor Swift
Listen to article Tech entrepreneur Lucy Guo has officially become the world's youngest self-made woman billionaire at age 30, overtaking pop superstar Taylor Swift. According to Forbes, Guo's net worth surged past $1.2 billion following a tender offer that raised the valuation of her former company, Scale AI, to $25 billion. Guo co-founded Scale AI in 2016 alongside Alexandr Wang. The San Francisco-based firm specializes in data labeling for artificial intelligence systems and serves major clients including the US government and OpenAI. Though Guo exited the company in 2018, she retained her equity, which has now turned into a billion-dollar fortune due to the company's soaring valuation. Raised in Fremont, California, to Chinese immigrant parents, Guo began coding in middle school. She briefly studied at Carnegie Mellon University before dropping out to join the Thiel Fellowship in 2014. Her early career included roles at Quora and Snapchat before co-founding Scale AI. Following her departure from Scale, Guo founded Backend Capital, a venture fund, and later launched Passes—a subscription-based content platform similar to OnlyFans and Patreon. Since its 2022 launch, Passes has raised $50 million and is currently valued at $150 million, attracting creators like Olivia Dunne and Shaquille O'Neal. However, Passes recently faced controversy after being named in a lawsuit involving child sexual abuse material. The company denied any wrongdoing and said all underage accounts had been removed before the legal filing. Despite legal scrutiny, Guo joins a select group of fewer than 10 self-made women billionaires under 40 globally, half of whom are American citizens.
