Gavaskar sends Bumrah blunt message on workload ahead of India's Asia Cup squad selection: 'Nobody is indispensable'

First Post11 hours ago
Indian batting icon Sunil Gavaskar has been critical of Jasprit Bumrah's workload management in recent matches, especially for he describes as 'pick and choose' culture, and has urged the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee to take a call on the star pacer's selection for upcoming events, including the Asia Cup.

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar reminded star pacer Jasprit Bumrah of the fact that 'nobody is indispensable' in the Indian team while discussing the upcoming Asia Cup as well as the home Test season that takes place after.
Bumrah finds himself at the centre of a major debate within the Indian cricket community over his workload management after skipping two out of five Tests in the recent tour of England, including the series finale at The Oval.

Selectors need to decide on Bumrah, urges Gavaskar
And former captain Gavaskar has largely been critical of Bumrah's 'pick and choose' behaviour, stating that the game eventually 'moves on' regardless of a player's stature.
'Nobody is indispensable. That's why it is of prime importance for the selectors to now decide when Jasprit Bumrah should be playing. There's already been a lot of debate about his appearances in the recently-concluded series in England,' Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid Day.
'To be fair, he had informed the selection committee that he could play only three Tests out of the five. The debate that has generated some heat is whether he should have played the last must-win Test match, especially since it was the grassiest pitch at the Oval in a long time.
'The next Test match was in early October, and so there were two clear months for him to rest and recover in time for that. The Indian team management stated that he wasn't picked considering his future. This is where the lines between what is good for the individual and what is good for Indian cricket got a little blurred.
'Surely at that stage if he was fit, then for Indian cricket's sake, he had to play. Whether then it was his call or the management's call not to play is not known, but in the end after India's win it showed once again if ever there was need to know that nobody is indispensable in the game. The game just moves on,' he added.

Bumrah, who had suffered a back injury in January that has forced the Indian team management to be careful about his bowling workload, had reportedly reached out to the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee informing them of his availability for the upcoming Asia Cup.
The 31-year-old speedster has not played white-ball cricket for India since starring in the Rohit Sharma-led side's triumph in last year's T20 World Cup.

Guirassy sends Dortmund through against local rival Essen in German Cup

BERLIN (AP) — Serhou Guirassy fired Borussia Dortmund into the second round of the German Cup with a 1-0 win at nearby Rot-Weiss Essen on Monday. HT Image But Dortmund's celebrations were muted by a bad tackle from Essen substitute Kelsey Owusu on Yan Couto before the final whistle, when he caught the Dortmund wing back's knee with the sole of his boot. Couto was carried off on a stretcher with his hands over his face. Guinea star Guirassy took one touch to elude a defender and strike the ball on the turn into the bottom corner in the 79th minute. The goal came after Essen, the 1955 German champion playing in the third division, carved out a couple of half-chances in what was a meager game for goal opportunities. Dortmund's Julian Brand struck the side netting and fellow substitute Jobe Bellingham caused Essen's defense problems after their introduction in the 64th. It was Bellingham's first competitive appearance for Dortmund on German soil since his summer move from Sunderland. Dortmund coach Niko Kovač led Eintracht Frankfurt to the title in 2018 and repeated the feat with Bayern Munich the following year. Nadiem Adli's brilliant free kick was enough for Mainz to overcome Dynamo Dresden 1-0 earlier. The former Germany midfielder lifted the ball over the defensive wall and in off the left post in the 22nd minute, the only goal from a game in which second-division club Dresden missed more chances. In the final minute, Jakob Lemmer hit the side netting, leaving many home fans with their heads in their hands. Mainz coach Bo Henriksen was sent off shortly beforehand for holding onto the ball as the tension increased in a nervy finale. Sebastian Grönning scored the winning spot kick for Hertha Berlin to progress against second-division rival Prueßen Münster 5-3 on penalties after their game ended scoreless with extra time. The home team had by far the greater chances — 27 shots at goal compared to Hertha's 11 — but couldn't make any of them count. Fortuna Düsseldorf won at third-division Schweinfurt 4-2. ___ AP soccer:

Kodagu supply line keeps K'taka going

Bengaluru: Kodagu has always been the cradle of Indian hockey. The district has produced several international players, including MP Ganesh, MM Somaya, SV Sunil and VR Raghunath, to name just a few. The Karnataka district has been a constant source of inspiration for future generations to continue to earn laurels for the state and country. No wonder that 11 players from Kodagu are part of Karnataka's 18-member squad in the ongoing Junior Men's National Championship in Jalandhar, Punjab. "It is a matter of pride for Kodagu, with so many players from the district featuring in the team. It is primarily because of the history and the legacy Kodagu players have created," coach Thanu Nanjappa told TOI. With one win and loss under their belt, Karnataka have advanced to the quarterfinals. It allows young players a chance to showcase their talent," the 19-year-old Dhruva said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Compare Spreads: Bitcoin vs Ethereum CFDs IC Markets Learn More Vishwajith, another player from Kodagu, said: "Hockey has always been in our blood. Our family members are very supportive and they always motivate us, which keeps us going." The popularity of the sport in this district can also be attributed to the Kodava Hockey Festival, which has become integral to the community's culture. The competition within the community helps unite families and generations through the sport. It is unsurprising that youngsters from Kodagu travel to Bengaluru for trials, outnumbering people from other regions. Schools also play an important role in helping the budding talents hone their skills during the formative years. Impressive performances at the school level and in age-group competitions help them get selected to the sports hostels. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Dolphins' De'Von Achane likely will miss practice this week because of calf injury

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Dolphins running back De'Von Achane likely will miss this week of practice as he nurses a calf injury, coach Mike McDaniel said Monday. HT Image Achane was sidelined for Miami's preseason game against the Lions on Saturday and was held out of the second day of joint practices at Detroit. McDaniel said the team is mostly being preventative by holding Achane out. 'Calves are the ones that you have to be super proactive, especially with explosive players," McDaniel said. "We don't want to have a long, strenuous, nagging issue. So we probably won't see De'Von this week after further assessment through the (past) weekend. But that's more preventative in nature just because — all trainers across the league have horror stories with calves if you're too aggressive coming back.' Achane has rushed for 1,707 yards and 14 touchdowns in two seasons for the Dolphins and is expected to be one of Miami's top offensive weapons this season. The Dolphins will host the Jacksonville Jaguars for one joint practice on Thursday before their preseason finale Saturday night. Defensive tackle Zach Sieler, who has been dealing with an undisclosed injury, will return to practice this week. And tight end Darren Waller could practice for the first time. Waller came out of retirement in July to sign a one-year deal with the Dolphins but has been working out separately from the team as he gets back into football shape. 'This is where we thought a realistic assessment would be made," McDaniel said, "and we're kind of making that daily. I'm expecting to see him sooner than later. I (thought) in the back of my mind that it would be this week, but I'm not going to just put him out there this week just because I said it before. I'm hopeful, but it's very soon.' The Dolphins hosted four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Matthew Judon on a free agent visit Monday. Jaelan Phillips and Chop Robinson sustained injuries over the past week, but McDaniel said bringing in Judon was not related to any potential long-term injuries to the team's linebackers. 'Visiting for visiting purposes," he said. 'We'll see what it leads to.' Judon had 41 tackles, 5 1/2 sacks and an interception returned for a touchdown in 15 starts for the Atlanta Falcons last year. ___ AP NFL:
