
Is America running into trouble over its trade war with China?
Go Auto reports that the rare-earth elements situation could become more important than the semi-conductor shortage of 2021-2023.
US-based Automotive News suggests that the fate of automakers' assembly lines is in the hands of a small team of Chinese bureaucrats.
That's because China controls up to 70 per cent of global rare-earth mining and 85 per cent of refining capacity. It is also responsible for producing around 90 per cent of rare-earth metal alloys and magnet production. And it has limited supply amid an ongoing trade war with the United States.
An EV uses around half a kilogramme of rare-earth elements and the average ICE vehicle half that. These components are key to electric motors, oil pumps, speakers, and a range of sensors and solenoids.
Production of vehicles outside of China may be severely curtailed if the shortage continues. And the shortage will also impact many other sectors of the economy for they are found in a range of consumer products.
Already, Ford suggests that rare-earth materials and components are taking longer than usual to pass through China's approval process. The company had to idle its Chicago Assembly plant for a week recently. It couldn't get rare-earth metals used to make brake boosters.
At best, it is taking more time for the approvals to go through. And that means car companies are facing increased shipment costs.
According to China's Ministry of Commerce, the export permit approval process relies upon three senior officials.
A spokesperson from European powerhouse, ZF, said the rare-earths issue could cause new-vehicle production to drop in the second half of this year.
As an aside, ZF has developed an electric motor with magnetic components that use no rare earth elements.
Brazil, the US and Australia, amongst others, are also involved in mining and processing of rare earth elements. All are working to increase output to cover the shortfall.

Dairy revenue up: Yili Group
Zhiqiang Li Upgrades to the Oceania Dairy plant in Glenavy have helped China-based parent company Yili Group boost New Zealand revenue growth, the company reports. Yili Group-owned dairy companies Westland Milk Products and Oceania Dairy this week posted combined unaudited revenue growth of 16% compared with the same period last year. Before tax profit growth for the first half of 2025 is 12% and Yili Group executive director Zhiqiang Li said profitability was expected to continue to climb for both companies well into 2026. "Production capacity of high-demand, high-value products across Westland's Hokitika and Rolleston sites and ODL's Glenavy facility have undergone significant investment to capitalise on surging global demand for high-quality dairy products," Mr Li said. Consumer butter production capacity at Hokitika has been boosted by 10,000tonnes, while increased skim-milk powder production capacity at Glenavy has also led to increased production of UHT Cream at Rolleston, with ODL cream now diverted to the Rolleston site. Mr Li said both Westland and ODL, which since 2024 have also operated under a co-operative external sales arrangement, are well positioned to build revenue growth off the back of increased production capacity. "Greater efficiencies and production capacity under this co-operative arrangement give us far more opportunities to optimise product mix and build on our high-value strategy," Mr Li said. "Profits for the individual companies in the meantime will go through a consolidation period; however, both total revenue and profit margins are expected to continue to show healthy growth," he said. — Allied Media

Beercycle promises to pedal local brews

Beercycle Ltd founder and CEO Nick Wilson says one of its beercycles is already doing practice runs around the CBD, and its first paid tour's been booked for next weekend. The company's now got consent from Queenstown's council for the venture. The plan is for beercycles to carry up to 15 people, including a host/driver, and take punters on two-hour tours around the resort with stops at three or four local venues. Wilson, who started with his first beercycle in Auckland nine years ago and has since expanded to Hamilton and Christchurch, reckons Queenstown's going to be the best of the lot. "There's so much to do, and everyone''s in such a good mood. "It'll definitely be the most popular one." He's now waiting for the company's liquor licence application to be approved so beer can be served on the beercycle — a first for Beercycle. To that end, he's in discussions with resort craft breweries Searchlight, Altitude and Crimson Badger. "We're only going to be serving Queenstown beers — we want it to be a fully Queenstown-based experience. "We could sell international beers, but why would you when some of the best beer in New Zealand is made in Queenstown?" The tours will operate daily between 11am and 9pm.
