Madurai student to play int'l disability cricket series in England

Time of India14 hours ago

Madurai: G Vikash Ganeshkumar, a 21-year-old student from The Bethshan Higher Special School in Pasumalai, Madurai, is set to represent India in the upcoming International T20 Mixed Disability Cricket Series against England.
The series is scheduled to be held in London from June 15 to July 4.
Vikash is one of only four intellectually disabled players in the 16-member Indian squad and the sole representative from Tamil Nadu. The series is organised by the Differently Abled Cricket Council of India (DCCI) in collaboration with the England and Wales Cricket Board.
Vikash's mother, Prema Latha, recalls discovering that her son was mildly intellectually disabled at the age of five.
"He studied in a mainstream school until Class 8. Later, we enrolled him at Bethshan, where teachers encouraged him to try different sports. Though he always loved cricket, it wasn't a part of the Special Olympics programme back then," she said.
His father, Ganesh Kumar, a sub-inspector in charge of the dog squad with Madurai police, said Vikash initially explored other sports like badminton to qualify for special events.

"But the moment cricket was included in the mixed disability category, he focused fully on it. He first played at the district level, then qualified for the state-level competition in Perambur. The DCCI selectors noticed him and even asked for videos of him batting and bowling," he said.
That video, combined with his state-level performance, earned him a call from the DCCI a month ago. "That day was the happiest moment of his life. His dream was always to wear the India jersey. As a mother, I often wondered if it would be possible. But my mother always believed he would achieve something great — and today, he has," said Latha. Vikash is currently undergoing training in Jaipur and will fly to England on Saturday.

Dominant Arya Borse-Arjun Babuta Pair Wins World Cup Gold Beating Olympic Champions From China

India's Arya Borse and Arjun Babuta dished out a thoroughly dominant performance and outplayed China's reigning Olympic and world champion duo Zifei Wang and Lihao Sheng 17-7 to win the gold medal in the 10m air rifle mixed team event of the ISSF World Cup in Munich on Saturday. Arya and Arjun were in fine fettle when it mattered the most to win the top prize in the prestigious tournament, not giving the Chinese an inch. The Indian duo entered the gold medal round after aggregating 635.2 in the qualifications, just .7 behind Wang and Sheng (635.9), which is also the qualifications world record. Arya had paired with Rudrankksh Patil to win the 10m air rifle mixed team silver in the World Cup in Lima, Peru, earlier this year. The other Indian pair in the event, Elavenil Valarivan and Ankush Jadhav finished sixth in the qualifications with 631.8.. Norway's Jeanette Hegg Duestad and Jon-Hermann Hegg bagged the bronze medal with a 16-14 victory over the UAS's Sagen Maddalena and Peter Matthew Fiori. This is India's fourth medal and second gold in the ongoing World Cup after Suruchi Singh's yellow mettle and the two bronze won by Sift Kaur Samra and Elavenil in their respective individual events earlier this week.. In the 10m air pistol mixed team event, the combo of Manu Bhaker and Aditya Malra ended sixth with a combined total of 577 in the qualifications, while the Suruchi Singh and Varun Tomar was placed 10th with 576. Unstoppable Borse-Babuta Taking aim on the concluding day of the tournament, Arjun (317.7) and Arya (317.5) shot a combined 635.2 to finish second behind Sheng and Wang, who topped the 58-team field with a world record (also junior) score of 635.9. In the final, Arya began with a 9.8 to give the Chinese pair an early lead (0-2), but in the next seven series of single shots, the Indians shot only one shot below 10.5 (a 10.2) to take a huge 13-3 lead after the eighth series. The top Chinese pair then managed to win the next two narrowly in the race to 16, but it was again business as usual from the 11th series, as Arya and Arjun fired a couple of 10.5 and 10.7s respectively, to get to match point. In the final 12th series, while Arjun cancelled out Sheng with identical 10.1s, Arya outgunned Wang 10.6-10.4, to give India a memorable gold medal.

FIH Pro League: Indian Women's Hockey Team Mirrors The Men, Lose 3-2 To Australia

Last Updated: Indian women's hockey team have lost 2-3 to Australia in FIH Pro League despite a strong comeback with goals from Deepika and Neha. The Indian women's hockey team fought after conceding three goals against the mighty Aussies but lost 2-3 in a FIH Pro League game on Saturday, June 14, in London. Australia took a 3-0 lead through field goals from forward Courtney Schonell, Lexie Pickering and a penalty stroke conversion by Tatum Stewart. The Indians mounted a comeback in the second half with two PC goals from Deepika and Neha. When the team needs a breakthrough, she delivers. 💪🏻Deepika finds the net with a powerful penalty corner, scoring the first goal of the match for our Indian Women's Hockey Team. 🇮🇳 #HockeyIndia #IndiaKaGame... @CMO_Odisha @IndiaSports @sports_odisha @Media_SAI @FIH_Hockey — Hockey India (@TheHockeyIndia) June 14, 2025 India had the initial share of exchanges but couldn't breach the solid Aussie defence. In the ninth minute, Australia earned their first PC, but India defended. In the 13th minute, India were denied by a superb double save from Aussie keeper Aleisha Power. A minute into the second quarter, Schonell scored after a defensive lapse from India, an issue which has been plaguing the men's team as well, who have now lost five games in a row. Six minutes later, Australia doubled their lead when Pickering found the net amid a goalmouth scramble. Australia dominated the first half and went into the break with a 2-0 lead. Australia were awarded another PC for a stick check, which resulted in a penalty stroke because of foot involvement and Stewart made no mistake, giving her team a 3-0 advantage. The final quarter, however, belonged to India as they pressed hard on the Aussie defence and reduced the margin with their first PC, converted by Deepika. India bagged two more successive PCs soon after, but wasted both chances. Eight minutes from the final whistle, India had another PC and this time Neha scored from a rebound after Deepika's flick was saved by the Aussie goalie. Two minutes from full time, India had a great opportunity to equalise from a PC but squandered the chance. India will again play Australia on Sunday, June 15 at the same venue. Old guard out, new 'leaders' in: Comparing India's 2021 and 2025 England Test squads

Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill (Getty Image) As India prepare for the five-match Test series in England starting June 20 in Leeds, the contrast between the 2025 and 2021 squads is striking and symbolic of a generational shift in Indian cricket. Four years ago, India toured England with a squad brimming with battle-hardened veterans - Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami. That team was built on decades of experience, with seven players having played over 50 Tests, including Ishant who had played 102 matches. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Fast forward to 2025, and Team India returns with a new-look side, led by 25-year-old Shubman Gill, with just 32 Tests to his name. With the retirements of Kohli, Rohit and Ashwin, this new squad is thin on experience. Only two players in the squad have played more than 50 Tests, and three are yet to debut in the format. The leadership group itself is in transition, with Gill and Rishabh Pant forming a youthful core. Poll Will the leadership transition from Kohli and Rahane to Gill and Pant affect Team India's performance? Yes, it will be challenging No, they will adapt It depends on the matches This tour, therefore, is about ushering in a new era and testing the readiness of India's next generation to step into the shoes of legends. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Our one of a kind Patented Cold Water Extraction Process Superior Ginseng Undo The gulf in experience between the two squads couldn't be more glaring, making the 2025 series an opportunity to write a fresh chapter in Indian Test history. A squad of promise vs proven pedigree In 2021, the Indian squad had 11 players with 35-plus Tests experience, seven of whom had already played over 50 Tests. Virat Kohli was leading the side with 92 Tests and over 7,500 runs, while his deputy Ajinkya Rahane had 74 matches to his name. Eleven players were over the age of 30. Together, the squad had amassed 83 Test centuries, and average experience of players was 38.25 matches. Contrast that with 2025, where 10 of the 18 squad members are under 30, and three players are yet to debut in Tests. The collective Test experience per player stands at just 20.6, with the entire squad combining for only 29 Test hundreds. This team represents potential more than pedigree, a striking reversal from the proven match-winners of four years ago. Yashasvi Jaiswal's Coach on England Prep, Opening Partner, & Playing Under Gill Leadership transition: From giants to greenhorns In 2021, Kohli and Rahane were two of India's most seasoned campaigners, boasting over 12,000 runs between them. Gill and Rishabh Pant in 2025 are still learning the ropes as leaders. Gill has played 32 Tests but has averaged just 14.66 in England. Pant, with 43 Tests under his belt, however, brings credibility with two hundreds in nine matches in England and could be the key to India's batting. Top order shift: Uncertainty replaces stability The 2021 top order of Rohit, KL Rahul and Pujara had a combined 161 Tests and 10,952 runs, forming a rock-solid top three. In 2025, Jaiswal is set to open, but his partner remains undecided, possibly Rahul, or newcomers like Abhimanyu Easwaran or Sai Sudharsan. Gill, once an opener, had dropped to No. 3 recently and now may even bat at No. 4 to lend stability. There's experimentation in the top order where once there was certainty. Middle order & lower Order: Looks credible despite retirements With Kohli and Rahane gone, the 2025 middle order will rely on Gill, Pant, KL Rahul or Karun Nair, and Jadeja. While Pant brings X-factor, the others will need to stand up under pressure. It still looks credible as most of them are solid bats with a fair amount of experience and pedigree. Nitish Kumar Reddy at No. 8 adds batting depth, unlike the longer tail India carried in 2021 with Ishant, Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj batting from 8 to 11. 'Nitish Kumar is a guy who can bowl that magic ball': India bowling coach Morne Morkel Bowling Attack: Jadeja-Bumrah still the spine, but depth missing The 2021 bowling attack was one of India's finest overseas units - Ashwin (413 wickets), Ishant (306), Jadeja (221), Shami (184), Umesh (148), and Bumrah (83) offered pace, control, and experience. In 2025, Bumrah (205 wickets), Jadeja (323), and Siraj (100) remain key. However, beyond them, there's a sharp drop in experience. Kuldeep, Shardul, Arshdeep and rest bring variety but are largely untested in English conditions. Result of 2021 Tour & outlook for 2025 India's 2021 campaign saw them lead 2-1 before the series was halted due to COVID. The final Test, played in 2022, ended in an England win, levelling the series 2-2. Despite a seasoned squad, India couldn't seal the series. In 2025, the expectations are modest but the curiosity is high. Can this young Indian side defy the odds and perform in testing English conditions? The series marks a full-circle moment - ending one era, and potentially beginning another.
