AI-enabled CCTV cameras to curb illegal parking on roads leading to airport

Time of India17-06-2025
Pune: The airport authorities, in coordination with the Pune traffic police and the AeroMall officials, will install AI-enabled CCTV cameras on the New Airport Road and the VIP Road (Symbiosis College Road) within a couple of months to monitor and penalise illegally parked vehicles.
Pune airport director Santosh Dhoke told TOI that a feasibility study was under way. "It will take some more time, after which the final report will be ready. We had initial talks about the project with an agency. Based on the final report, these cameras — recently installed on FC Road — will be put up here too," he said.
Y S Rajput, the vice-president of AeroMall, told TOI, "The agency recently gave a presentation on the functioning of the cameras, and we hope to get these soon.
During the late evening hours, both these roads are clogged most of the time. Private cars and cabs are parked on either side. There have been many complaints about the same."
Airport officials said a total of 3-4 such cameras could be installed by the end of August. "Both these roads are important for access to the airport. Illegal parking on these roads has been a problem for a long time. It is mainly done in the late evening and night hours, when police personnel are not present," another airport official said.

"The modern cameras equipped with digital screens can automatically detect any vehicles parked wrongly. Once a vehicle is tracked, its registration number will flash on the screen. Around a minute will be given to the vehicle owner to remove it, failing which an online challan will generate automatically without zero human interference, ruling out chances of arguments," another airport official said.
Vimannagar's frequent flier Sushil Pandey said during the rains, the situation becomes tougher.
"These roads are narrow and illegally parked vehicles cause a major problem. It took me almost an hour to go from the AeroMall to the Wiekfield Chowk, a distance of around 300 to 400 metres, earlier this month because it was raining and vehicles, mainly cabs, were parked on both sides of the road. Cab drivers enter the AeroMall only when they get a long trip," the IT professional said.
Prashik Ojha, another frequent flyer, said, "Owners of even costly cars don't want to spend money on parking at the AeroMall or at another private parking lot on the VIP Road, right before the AeroMall.
I have seen the police taking action against these in the daytime, but it is a free-for-all type of situation at night. Even autorickshaws are parked anywhere in front of the airport, hindering vehicles' movement," the working professional said.
TOI reported earlier this month that the airport authorities were planning to introduce a time-bound entry system at the facility to curb congestion. The airport director said they were planning a system under which any private vehicle found parked in the circulating area of the terminal building would be fined Rs500. "We are conducting a detailed study on the system at present, after which it will be sent to the headquarters for approval," Dhoke said.

China considering yuan-backed stablecoins to boost global currency usage, sources say

China is considering allowing the usage of yuan-backed stablecoins for the first time to boost wider adoption of its currency globally, sources familiar with the matter said, in a major reversal of its stance towards digital assets. The State Council - China's cabinet - will review and possibly approve a roadmap later this month for the greater usage of the currency globally, including catching up with a U.S. push on stablecoins, said the sources. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Victoria Principal Is Almost 75, See Her Now The Latest Article Undo The plan is expected to include targets for usage of the Chinese currency in the global markets and outline the responsibilities of domestic regulators, they said, adding that the roadmap will also include guidelines for risk prevention. Did you Know? The world of cryptocurrencies is very dynamic. Prices can go up or down in a matter of seconds. Thus, having reliable answers to such questions is crucial for investors. View Details » In that meeting, senior leaders are likely to deliver remarks to set the tone for stablecoins and define the boundaries of its application and development in business, said the source. Live Events China's plan for the usage of stablecoins, if approved, would mark a major shift in its approach towards digital assets. The country banned cryptocurrency trading and mining in 2021 due to concerns about the stability of the financial system. China has long aspired for the yuan to achieve global currency status, akin to the dollar or euro, reflecting its weight as the world's second-biggest economy. However, its tight capital controls and its trillion-dollar annual trade surpluses have worked against that aim. Those restrictions are likely to be a key hurdle to the development of stablecoins as well, market participants have said. Stablecoins are a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a constant value. They are usually pegged to a fiat currency such as the U.S. dollar and are commonly used by crypto traders to move funds between tokens. The yuan's share as a global payment currency fell to 2.88% in June, its lowest in two years, according to payment platform SWIFT. In contrast, the U.S. dollar commanded a 47.19% market share. China places strong capital controls to manage flows in and out of the border, with a few connect schemes permitting capital to be deployed in some key offshore market such as Hong Kong. In the U.S., President Donald Trump backed stablecoins days after his inauguration in January and is establishing a regulatory framework that helps legitimise dollar-pegged cryptocurrencies. Their underlying blockchain technology enables instant, borderless and round-the-clock transfer of funds at low cost, giving stablecoins the potential to disrupt traditional daily money moves and cross-border payment systems. Financial innovation, specifically stablecoins, is viewed by Beijing as a promising tool for yuan internationalisation amid the growing influence of U.S. dollar-linked cryptocurrencies in global finance, said the sources. Details of the plan are expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks, with Chinese regulators, including the central bank, the People's Bank of China (PBOC), being assigned implementation duties, said the sources. The sources declined to be named as they were not authorised to speak to the media. The State Council Information Office (SCIO) did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. The PBOC could not be immediately be contacted for comment outside of normal business hours. MAJOR SHIFT Stablecoins backed by the U.S. dollar currently dominate the market, accounting for over 99% of the global stablecoin supply, according to the Bank for International Settlements. In Asia, South Korea has pledged to allow companies to introduce won-based stablecoins and develop the necessary infrastructure, while similar initiatives are underway in Japan. The latest push comes amid mounting geopolitical tensions with Washington, and the growing use of dollar-backed stablecoins by Chinese exporters. Beijing's latest plans come after a Shanghai regulator last month said it had held a meeting for local government officials to consider strategic responses to stablecoins and digital currencies. In a recent interview, PBOC advisor Huang Yiping told local media that an offshore yuan stablecoin in Hong Kong is "a possibility". Separately, Hong Kong's long-awaited stablecoin ordinance took effect on August 1 and positions the Chinese-controlled territory as one of the first markets globally to regulate fiat-backed stablecoin issuers. China's commercial hub Shanghai is also establishing an international operation centre for the digital yuan. According to the sources, Hong Kong and Shanghai will be the main cities to fast-track local implementation of the latest plan. China is expected to discuss expanding the use of yuan and possibly stablecoins for cross-border trade and payments with some countries at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit to be held Aug. 31-Sep. 1 in Tianjin, said the sources. The global stablecoin market is currently small at about $247 billion, according to crypto data provider CoinGecko. However, Standard Chartered Bank estimates it could grow to $2 trillion by 2028.

Online Gaming Bill: Cricket industry's revenue could be hit due to proposed ban on real money gaming

The 'Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025 ', which was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, could spell the end of "real money gaming platforms", that have stakes in the sponsorship market of Indian sports, most significantly cricket. The contents of the bill, which aims to regulate one of the fastest growing industries, is music to the ears for the Esports fraternity in the country. But the multi-billion dollar fantasy gaming industry comprising companies that have spent big money in sponsorship of cricket might see a marked dip in their revenues. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Launch your PM career IITD PM Apply Now And as a chain reaction, it could also affect the sports sponsorship market, including individual players' sponsorship and franchise-based domestic leagues of disciplines like kabaddi and football. The Online gaming regulation bill looks to create a regulatory body that will look after four diverse segments -- Esports, educational gaming, social and casual gaming and real money gaming. Live Events Of these, there will be restrictions on online money games, states the document which is in possession of PTI. As per "PROHIBITIONS" clause: "No person shall offer, aid, abet, induce or otherwise indulge or engage in the offering of online money game and online money gaming service. "No bank, financial institution, or any other person facilitating financial transactions or authorisation of funds shall engage in, permit, aid, abet, induce or otherwise facilitate any transaction or authorisation of funds towards payment for any online money gaming service." The "OFFENCES AND PENALTIES" clause clearly terms real money gaming as a criminal offence which could lead to jail and humongous fine for the service provider. Clause 9. (1) reads "Any person who offers online money gaming service in contravention of section 5 shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years or with fine which may extend to one crore rupees or with both. Clause 9. (2) reads: "Any person who makes or causes to make advertisement in any media, in contravention of section 6, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years or with fine which may extend to fifty lakh rupees or with both. The government makes it clear that real money gaming is leading to a lot of social problems and it needs some kind of regulation. "....the parallel proliferation of online money games accessible through mobile phones, computers and the internet, and offering monetary returns against user deposits has led to serious social, financial, psychological and public health harms, particularly among young individuals and economically disadvantaged groups; "...such games often use manipulative design features, addictive algorithms, bots and undisclosed agents, undermining fairness, transparency and user protection, while promoting compulsive behaviour leading to financial ruin." Implications of the Bill =============== Cricket is one sport which has seen a huge influx of real money gaming with Indian team's title sponsor being Dream 11. My11Circle is the official fantasy sports partner of the money-spinning Indian Premier League. Dream11 brought the Indian team's title rights for about USD 44 million (Rs 358 crore approx). My11Circle brought IPL fantasy gaming rights for a fee of Rs 625 crore for five years (Rs 125 crore approx annually). Add to this the country's top cricketers -- former as well as current -- have hefty personal endorsement deals with various real money gaming platforms. Noted sports lawyer Vidushpat Singhania, who has a deep understanding of the subject, explained the consequences in a nutshell. "Cricket is huge in India and there won't be any dearth of sponsors for Indian cricket and its properties. However, personal sponsorship market can shrink because of this bill. "Also fan engagement will be affected," Singhania told PTI. He, however, explained that fantasy games can still run a subscription based model. "There will be a subscription fee and say you pay Rs 100 for a gaming app and test your skills in fantasy gaming. But real money gaming which is paying and earning money, that is prohibited as per this bill." The gigantic revenue stream of all these fantasy gaming apps will certainly diminish due to the ban and hence money flowing back into the sport will decrease markedly. Joy for Esports Market ============== Esports made its debut at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023 and the International Olympic Committee will be conducting its first Esport Olympics in Riyadh in 2027. Sharing his thoughts on this development, Akshat Rathee, Co-founder and Managing Director of NODWIN Gaming, says, "The government's intent to recognise and promote esports, as highlighted in the recent bill, is an encouraging step towards building a structured and globally competitive ecosystem. "However, for this vision to truly materialise, it is critical that the terminology used in the bill, particularly the distinctions between esports, online gaming, online social gaming, and online money gaming be clearly defined and uniformly understood."
