Historic Lennoxtown church building set to become community arts centre
Campsie High Kirk, a 200-year-old building in Lennoxtown, will be formally handed over to the community in a ceremony on Wednesday, July 9, as part of a major restoration project.
The church will be transformed into an arts hub under the Ownerless Property Transfer Scheme (OPTS), launched last year by the King's and Lord Treasurer's Remembrancer (KLTR).

John Logue, the KLTR, said: "The Friends of Campsie High Kirk presented a really compelling case for not only rescuing this magnificent building from further decline but also providing a community arts hub with the potential to give a huge economic and cultural boost to the Lennoxtown area.

"We are delighted to see the opportunities provided by the OPTS used in this way and look forward to watching the transformation."
The Friends of Campsie High Kirk secured ownership for £1 plus transfer costs.

"It's about something much bigger.
"It's about communities being empowered by those in a position to give them the tools to make it happen.
"That applies from government right down to communities like ours."
The OPTS allows community groups and local authorities to apply for ownerless properties if they can show public benefit and community support.
Since its launch, the scheme has helped deliver green spaces, affordable housing, and a community hub.
Campsie High Kirk was designed in the early 19th century by Glaswegian architect David Hamilton.

Fire destroys historic former YMCA building in Scottish town
A fire has destroyed the former YMCA building in Wishaw. Firefighters worked through the night tackling the blaze. Emergency services were called to the scene on Main Street at around 10:35pm on Sunday. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) sent six fire engines and specialist resources to the incident on Sunday evening. There were no reports of any casualties. "While the building itself was no longer in use, my main concern is for the safety of those living or working nearby. I sincerely hope everyone in the surrounding area is safe and unharmed. "Thank you to our emergency services for their swift response in containing the blaze and protecting neighbouring properties. "If you live nearby, please follow the advice from Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, and avoid the area while investigations continue. "Avoid Main Street and surrounding roads in Wishaw due to roads closed." The Wishaw YMCA building was built in 1914 by architect James Steel and features a domestic-style design with a large hall. The building was forced to close in 2018 due to fire safety concerns.

Grand reopening of Basildon Miniature Railway sees touching station tribute
A MUCH-LOVED and long-closed miniature railway has officially reopened to residents following an emotional event over the weekend. The Basildon Miniature Railway, in Pitsea's Wat Tyler Country Park, has been painstakingly restored since falling into disrepair and closing in 2019. On Sunday, councillors, volunteers and excited south Essex residents gathered at the rural railway to mark its much anticipated return. Edinburgh locals 'grateful' as fire crews battle Arthur's Seat blaze overnight
Edinburgh residents have praised fire crews who battled a blaze on Arthur's Seat 'well into the night'. The flames were first reported at around 4pm on Sunday, August 10. People were seen 'running down the hill' as the blaze 'spread quickly'. Over 12 hours later, by almost 5am on Monday morning, residents claimed the fires were 'still burning'. It's understood that four pump appliances and specialist resources were mobilised by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS). There were no reports of any casualties. Local resident AJ Stewart told us at around 4.53am: "At the time I'm sending this message, fires are still burning up on Arthur's Seat and have been all throughout the night. "It seems as soon as it's extinguished, another area begins to burn. It's absolutely devastating to see. Sending my best wishes to all emergency services involved, I am truly grateful for each and every one of them."
