Lengthy jail term for man who attacked Free State farmer
The regional court in Winnie Mandela (formerly Brandfort) has sentenced Moeketsi Mphatlatsa, 35, to 20 years' imprisonment after a targeted and violent attack on a female farmer, Mimie Jacobs, a respected community figure and former recipient of the Farmer of the Year award.
'The attack occurred on February 22 2020, when the accused and two accomplices broke into Ms Jacobs' home under the cover of darkness. They kicked down her door, tied her hands and feet with wire, and stabbed her multiple times, leaving her with serious neurological injuries,' National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said on Monday.
During the attack, the assailants informed her that they knew she lived alone, suggesting a premeditated and calculated assault.
'Despite her injuries, Ms Jacobs displayed remarkable resilience. She managed to walk 7km to the nearest farmhouse to seek help.'
In his sentencing argument, prosecutor Puseletso Ali described the attack as 'merciless and orchestrated', underscoring that this was no ordinary crime of violence.
'This was a deliberate, targeted act against a vulnerable woman living alone on her farm, a space that should be a haven. Instead, she was terrorised, overpowered and stripped of her dignity and security. Such crimes demand the strongest possible response from the justice system,' Ali said.
The court sentenced Mphatlatsa to 15 years for housebreaking with intent to rob and robbery, five years for kidnapping and 10 years for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The court ordered that the sentence for assault run concurrently with the sentence for housebreaking and robbery, meaning Mphatlatsa will serve an effective 20 years' direct imprisonment.

THE Scottburgh Regional Court has sentenced a 38-year-old man to life imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to the rape of a 64-year-old woman. The rape occurred in 2023 in the KwaCele area. The complainant had a right to feel safe in the sanctity of her own home, however, the accused invaded her privacy. The accused was convicted accordingly, and he was declared unfit to possess a firearm,' added Ramkisson-Kara. Ramkisson-Kara said the NPA welcomes the life sentence handed down. Cases such as this underscore the NPA's commitment to ensuring justice is served, particularly in cases involving crimes against the most vulnerable members of our society, our elderly,' she said. Shamila Batohi 'in hot water' over infiltration claims at NPA
ActionSA has called for the immediate removal of National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) boss Shamila Batohi over 'prosecutorial failures'. The call comes as Batohi, the outgoing National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), admitted this week that there is political interference in the work of the NPA and that it has been infiltrated. Apart from that, the NPA has been in the spotlight for prosecutorial failures in major cases, especially the acquittal of Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso and the extradition of former Free State Premier Ace Magashule's assistant Moroadi Cholota. In an interview with Newzroom Afrika , Batohi said the NPA has been infiltrated and captured by people who do not have the rule of law at heart. Batohi said they are having internal challenges; some prosecutors may not be aligned with the vision of really fighting for the rule of law in this country. However, she refused to divulge who had captured the institution, how it was captured, and the extent of the interference. Regarding failure to extradite the Gupta brothers, fugitive pastor Shepherd Bushiri, and possibly Timothy Omotoso, Shamila Batohi said none of the extradition challenges in these cases are because of the NPA. ActionSA has since demanded a full parliamentary inquiry into the NPA's ongoing prosecutorial failures and the extent to which political interference has affected its operations. The party said the NPA has once again exposed its deep dysfunction, either through incompetence or wilful neglect, with the latest disgrace being the collapse of the asbestos corruption case involving former Free State Premier, Ace Magashule, due to the unlawful and irregular handling of the extradition of his former personal assistant, Moroadi Cholota. 'This is not an isolated blunder, but part of a disturbing and entrenched pattern. The NPA has become a refuge for the politically connected, a place where accountability is avoided, justice is delayed, and prosecutions collapse with shocking regularity,' ActionSA leader in Parliament, Atholl Trollip, said. 'Under Shamila Batohi's leadership, the NPA reels from one scandal to the next. South Africans are left wondering if these failures are merely a result of incompetence or if there is a deliberate agenda to protect the corrupt. Let us be clear that this is not just about one failed case. 'The pattern is undeniable. From the Phala Phala saga to the collapse of high-profile cases like Timothy Omotoso, Shepherd Bushiri, and the Estina Dairy Project, the list of prosecutorial disasters grows longer by the day. Most damning is the NPA's failure to secure the extradition of the Gupta brothers, nearly a decade after the Gupta Leaks shook the nation,' Trollip added. Following Batohi's interviews, the EFF said it has written to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Thoko Didiza, demanding a debate on Batohi's claims. The party said the crisis at the NPA is not only one of infiltration, it is one of denial, incompetence and weak leadership. 'No transformation of the criminal justice system will be possible if its leadership refuses to acknowledge its own failures while hiding behind platitudes of institutional rebuilding. 'It is clear that Batohi has never had a coherent plan, no control over her institution, and no political will to confront the forces undermining the rule of law in South Africa. UDEMWO criticises Oscar Pistorius' return to sport, calling it a disrespect to Reeva Steenkamp's legacy

Image: File The United Democratic Movement Women's Organisation (UDEMWO) has condemned convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius' participation in the Ironman 70.3 triathlon in Durban last weekend, labelling it a blatant insult to the memory of his late girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. This statement comes in light of Pistorius' first public appearance in sports since being granted parole in January 2024, following the tragic murder of Steenkamp 12 years ago. Pistorius, widely recognised as the 'Blade Runner', completed the race, which consisted of swimming, cycling, and running, with a time of 5:56:39. His startling return to the public sporting domain has triggered vehement reactions. Thandi Nontenja, MP and UDEMWO secretary general, said the organisation is appalled to learn that Pistorius participated in the triathlon. According to media reports, his attorney Conrad Dormehl confirmed the athlete's involvement as 'part of his rehabilitation', and Pistorius' parole officer allegedly approved his travel from Pretoria to Durban, she said. Nontenja stated that this is unacceptable, and the fact that Pistorius was granted parole in the first place was a travesty of justice. 'His public return to sport as though nothing happened is a deep insult to the memory of Reeva Steenkamp and a painful reminder to her loved ones that her life was violently cut short. She will never again celebrate a birthday or milestone, while the man who ended her life enjoys the privilege of sport and public presence. 'This situation leaves a bitter taste for women in South Africa,' said Nontenja. 'In a country overwhelmed by gender-based violence and femicide, how can a convicted murderer be allowed to resume normal life so easily? How is it possible that a man who committed such a horrific crime against a woman is now participating in events alongside law-abiding citizens?' she asked. According to Nontenja, this is a glaring indictment of South Africa's justice system. She said the fact that Pistorius is walking free and engaging in leisure activities is a 'slap in the face' to the Steenkamp family and to every survivor of gender-based violence. 'It shows just how poorly the country is doing in enforcing laws that are meant to protect women. Our parole system is failing the very people it is supposed to safeguard,' she said. UDEMWO demanded that Pistorius not be allowed to live as though he were a free man while on parole. 'Public sporting events are for citizens who have not committed unspeakable crimes. We also demand a thorough investigation into the conduct of his parole officer,' said Nontenja. She added that the organisation is equally concerned about the failure of the National Prosecuting Authority under the leadership of Advocate Shamila Batohi to prioritise and effectively prosecute gender-based violence cases. 'The long delays in high-profile cases such as that of Timothy Omotoso are deeply troubling. It may well be for the best that Advocate Batohi is expected to leave office in January 2026.'
