Nadma helps repair damaged bridges in Sarawak
KUCHING: The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) has delivered Bailey Bridge construction components to Sarawak to repair broken bridges in remote districts, ahead of the coming monsoon season from November to March. 'We are thankful to Nadma for these vital components,' said Sarawak Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Amar Dougglas Uggah. 'The state Public Works Department will send the equipment to Sungai Baleh to build a new Bailey Bridge and replace the existing wooden one that was damaged by floods last year during the monsoon season. 'The bridge can be built within one week.' Sungai Baleh, which is about 100m wide, is located near the Long Banga settlement in interior Baram. Dougglas, who is also Sarawak deputy premier, said Nadma is helping to build similar iron bridges in interior central Sarawak to replace damaged ones. 'We have identified more than 200 locations throughout Sarawak where bridges are broken or damaged. 'Many are in (remote) locations where there are logging operations.' Among the locations are rural areas such as Long San, Palungan, Bario, Long Pilah (in northern Sarawak), the Belaga and Kapit districts in central Sarawak and the Skrang and Sri Aman districts in southern Sarawak. Dougglas expressed hope that Nadma and Putrajaya would help provide more equipment to Sarawak to construct new bridges at critical locations. Long Banga in the Baram district is located about 200km inland from Miri city. The Bailey Bridge components can be installed quickly and are made of iron, making them durable against heavy rain and floods. The bridge would help ensure seamless road travel into interior and remote areas. The construction of one bridge may vary depending on the width of the river and could cost up to RM300,000. This excludes the cost of transporting components through mountainous terrain. About one million residents in remote locations throughout Sarawak have to endure unsafe conditions on roads and bridges daily.

RM3 million Penampang flood aid distribution starts

PENAMPANG: A total of 3,293 heads of households affected by floods in this district between June 30 and July last year have begun receiving financial assistance under the National Disaster Management Agency's (Nadma) Bantuan Wang Ihsan (BWI) programme. Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick, said the distribution of aid amounting to over RM3 million is being carried out in stages from today until Friday at the KDCA Hall in Penampang with the Penampang District Council. Advertisement 'This assistance cannot replace the losses, trauma, or hardship faced, but it reflects the joint efforts of various parties to support those affected,' he said. He added that the aid distribution was the result of cross-agency collaboration, involving leadership and civil servants from multiple ministries, agencies, and departments to ensure the funds were delivered to those eligible. Ewon also outlined several ongoing initiatives aimed at improving disaster management and reducing the impact of flooding in Penampang. These include the installation of early warning siren systems in frequently affected villages such as Kg Kodundungan, Nambazan, Penampang Proper, Putaton, Kolopis and Sugud. Meanwhile, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), in coordination with the Council, continues to carry out maintenance work on rivers and drainage systems as part of a long-term plan to reduce the risk of recurring floods. Nadma reports six new heat-related illness cases on Aug 5
PETALING JAYA: Six new cases of heat-related illnesses were reported on Aug 5, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma). "The cumulative cases related to heat in 2025 stand at 46. The breakdown includes 42 cases of heat exhaustion and four cases of heat exertion," Nadma stated in its weather status report, which compiles updates from various agencies. Regarding state-specific data, 12 cases were reported in Selangor, seven in Perak, six in Sabah, five each in Melaka and Johor, four in Terengganu, three in Negeri Sembilan, and two each in Pahang and Kedah. These cases involved 23 adults, 22 adolescents, and one senior citizen. "No heat-related deaths have been reported from Jan 1 to Aug 5. All heat-related illness cases have recovered and were discharged from their respective treatment facilities." As of 4pm on Aug 5, only Machang district in Kelantan reported a cautionary level temperature, or Level 1 heatwave alert, which is an improvement from the 16 districts on July 29. The weather pattern is expected to persist from Aug 6 to Aug 12, with the maximum alert level anticipated to remain at Level 1. A Level 1 alert is issued when the maximum daily temperature ranges between 35°C and 37°C for three consecutive days. The Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) has released a drought alert for the Sungai Muda basin in Baling, Kedah. "As of Aug 6, the Bukit Merah Dam in Perak showed an increase of 0.4% in its raw water stock, although it remained at a critical level, at 16.83%, compared to 16.43% on Aug 5." Two dams, the Muda Dam (32.95%) and Ahning Dam (58.54%), were at alert levels. Regarding air pollution, no areas reported unhealthy air quality. Nadma also reported that Cloud Seeding Operations (OPA) on Aug 4 yielded positive results, with heavy rainfall reported 45 minutes after the operation was conducted over the dam area.
