Djokovic sets another record at Wimbledon and jokes about sipping margaritas on beach with rivals
It was Djokovic's 99th match win at Wimbledon overall, and the 19 third-round appearances put him one ahead of Roger Federer for most by any man in the Open Era.
It's hardly the most prestigious record for Djokovic, whose 24 Grand Slam titles — including seven at Wimbledon — are the most by a male player. But he could at least use it to poke fun at his new, and much younger, main rivals.
'Nineteen times, that's a great stat,' said the 38-year-old Djokovic. 'That's probably almost as much as Sinner and Alcaraz have years in their lives.'
Well, not quite.
Carlos Alcaraz, who beat Djokovic in the last two Wimbledon finals, is 22, while No. 1-ranked Jannik Sinner — who was playing later on Centre Court — is 23.

growing rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz
— especially in the wake of their five-set final at the French Open last month — has helped tennis move on from the era of the Big Three, where Djokovic is the last man standing after Federer and Rafael Nadal retired.
But Djokovic is too focused on proving he can still win another Slam to sit back and reflect on everything he has accomplished at Wimbledon.
'I don't pause to reflect, to be honest. I don't have time,' Djokovic said in an on-court interview. 'I would like to. But I think that's going to come probably when I set the racket aside and then sip margarita on the beach with Federer and Nadal and just reflect on our rivalry and everything.'
Against Evans, Djokovic failed to convert his first nine break points in the first set. But once he got the breakthrough for a 5-3 lead — raising both arms in the air as if to say 'finally' — he went five-for-six on break points the rest of the way.
'You have these kinds of days where everything goes your way,' said Djokovic, who didn't face a break point of his own until the final game. 'Everything flows.'
What else happened Thursday at Wimbledon?
No. 7-seeded Mirra Andreeva and No. 10 Emma Navarro both advanced in straight sets. The 18-year-old Andreeva earned a 6-1, 7-6 (4) win over Lucia Bronzetti of Italy, and Navarro cruised past Veronika Kudermetova 6-1, 6-2. No. 11 Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, beat Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-1.
In the men's draw, No. 11 Alex de Minaur ousted 115th-ranked Arthur Cazaux 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 and 19th-seeded Gregor Dimitrov outlasted Corentin Moutet 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Controversy has once again exploded at Wimbledon after Ben Shelton's second-round clash with Aussie Rinky Hijikata was suspended on Thursday evening with Shelton about to serve for the match. The American World No.10 was up 6-2 7-5 5-4 and about to serve for his spot in the third round when the chair umpire made the staggering call to suspend the match due to fading light. The time was 9.29pm in London when the umpire made the call - well before the 11pm curfew that Wimbledon has in place. The chair umpire obviously didn't think it was safe to continue on Court No.2 - which doesn't have a roof or flood lights. Shelton was left fuming at the decision, angrily remonstrating with the chair umpire as Hijikata left the court. It means the Aussie has been given an overnight reprieve before a likely exit in the second round - which might take mere minutes on Friday. Part of Shelton's frustration was the fact he'd actually asked the umpire and officials if the match should be suspended when he clinched the second set. Both players seemed to agree it would be a good time to put the match on hold for the night, but the umpire called for it to continue. Shelton and Hijikata didn't get on court until after 7pm due to four other matches that took place beforehand. One of the men's matches took nearly three hours and the second lasted two-and-a-half. Shelton actually had a golden opportunity to get the match finished when Hijikata was down 0-40 while serving at 3-5. But the Aussie reeled off five-straight points to get it back to 4-5, and that's when the umpire decided he'd seen enough for the day. "This is unbelievable," said former US star James Blake in commentary for ESPN. "Ben Shelton is understandably upset here. He hasn't dropped serve all match and they suspend play, after both players had made their own arguments to end play for the last 20 or 30 minutes. The first discussions we had about this were well over 30 minutes ago." Speaking later on ESPN, retired player CoCo Vandeweghe highlighted that Shelton won't have a proper off-day before his next match. "If I'm Ben Shelton, I'm really furious right now that I'm not able to serve it out," she said. Blake added: "A bad decision forced another bad could've stopped at the end of the second set or at 4-2." Hijikata's fate appears all-but sealed, and he probably won't be joining Alex de Minaur, Jordan Thompson and Daria Kasatkina as Aussies to make the third round. The controversy around the Shelton-Hijikata match comes after tennis fans had already called on Wimbledon officials to break some of its traditions and rules. A handful of matches at this year's tournament had already been suspended late in the night, including Taylor Fritz's first-round contest. The 11pm curfew came into place on the request of local residents, while also ensuring spectators get home safely. The bigger issue that arose on Thursday night was the fact that very few courts at Wimbledon have lights. One person wrote on social media: "For a major not to be able to continue beyond 9:30 is absolutely insane. Wimbledon needs to do something about this. This is beyond comprehension right now." The 11pm curfew had already been labelled "dumb" and "archaic" by those in the know, and Thursday night's scenes were blasted as "ridiculous" and "embarrassing" for the tournament. BERN, Switzerland (AP) — From the country that claimed the last four Ballon d'Or awards, Spain has a new star. The 18-year-old Vicky López announced her arrival on the big stage Thursday by helping Spain to an opening 5-0 rout of Portugal at the Women's European Championship. It was Spain's biggest ever win at the tournament, eclipsing the 4-1 win over Finland at Euro 2022. López added the second goal just minutes after Esther González scored the first and she proved a constant threat for the beleaguered Portuguese defense, setting up chances for Alexia Putellas and playing a decisive role before González' second goal. Her performance earned praise from Spain coach Montse Tomé, even if she understandably tried to reign in the burgeoning expectations. 'She's a young player with whom we have to be patient. We've been working with her for a year, almost two years now,' Tomé said. 'We have a lot of faith in her talent, and she's at a point where we've been able to give her minutes (of playing time) now. She responded well. She did the job she had to do very well.' Tomé said López still had plenty of time to develop. 'We have to keep helping her improve. López played till the 81st minute when she made way for Aitana Bonmatí, who started on the bench after being hospitalized for viral meningitis last week. Bonmatí won the last two Ballon d'Or awards. Putellas won the previous two. All three players are teammates at Barcelona. At 18 days and 342 days old, López became Spain's youngest player to appear at the European Championship. She'd already set the record as the country's youngest player when she made her debut last year. López became the youngest player to play in Spain's top women's league when she played for Madrid CFF aged 15. She joined Barcelona in 2022 and went on to break more records there because of her age, including becoming the club's youngest player, male or female, to appear in the Champions League. 'My family is the foundation of my entire life, and of course my father,' said López, whose mother died when she was 11 years old, and who still looks to the sky after she scores. Though Bonmatí is likely to play a greater role in the next games, López will get more opportunities to shine. She's already thinking of the team's goals. 'We're hungry for more,' López said. 'I think if we keep going like this, playing as a team and having that luck in front of goal, we'll be able to play a very good European Championship.'
