Ukraine uncovers defence sector corruption scheme, arrests officials
The National Anti-Corruption Agency (NABU) and the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP) uncovered a scheme misusing budget funds meant for defence forces. 'The scheme involved inflating prices for electronic warfare and drone equipment, with 30 percent of contract amounts diverted illegally,' NABU stated.
Suspects include a member of parliament, local administration heads, National Guard personnel, and defence company executives. Four arrests have been made, though identities remain undisclosed. The Interior Ministry suspended implicated National Guard members.
Zelensky praised the agencies, stating, 'It is important that anti-corruption institutions operate independently.' His initial move to control NABU and SAP, citing inefficiency and 'Russian influence,' triggered protests—Ukraine's first since Russia's 2022 invasion.

MOSCOW: Moscow is ready to welcome the arrival of His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia who will begin his maiden state visit to Russia starting Tuesday (Aug 5) until August 10. Malaysian Ambassador to Russia Datuk Cheong Loon Lai said Sultan Ibrahim expressed hope that the meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (Aug 6) could open a new chapter in Malaysia-Russia bilateral relations. "His Majesty also shares the same interests as President Putin, such as horse riding," he said. This visit at the invitation of President Putin is considered historic and meaningful because it is the first state visit by a Malaysian Head of State to Russia since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1967. Two locations for the visit in Moscow, namely the Russian Automotive Technology Development Center (Nami) and the Tochka Kipeniya Technology and Innovation Center, are also ready to welcome Sultan Ibrahim's arrival. "His Majesty will visit Nami to inspect and explore Russian automotive technology, particularly in the field of research and development. "This visit provides an opportunity for His Majesty to see first-hand the advancement of Russian technology given His Majesty's deep interest in the automotive industry," said Cheong. The visit to Tochka Kipeniya, he said, also provides an opportunity for Malaysia to explore innovative Russian solutions in the field of drone and robotics development through artificial intelligence (AI) applications for public use, security, defence, environment, space projects and biodrones. Earlier, Cheong attended a briefing session on the national celebration event at the Kremlin, the location of Sultan Ibrahim's official meeting with President Putin. "India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don't care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. "Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA." He did not elaborate on what the tariff would be. Trump last week said he would impose a 25% tariff on goods imported from India and added that the world's fifth-largest economy would also face an unspecified penalty but gave no details. Over the weekend, two Indian government sources told Reuters that India will keep purchasing oil from Russia despite U.S. Trump's threats. Trump says to raise tariff on India over Russia oil purchases
WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump threatened Monday to "substantially" hike US tariffs on goods from India over its purchases of Russian oil – a key source of revenue for Moscow's war on Ukraine. Trump's heightened pressure on India comes after he signaled fresh sanctions on Moscow if it did not make progress by Friday towards a peace deal with Kyiv, more than three years since Russia's invasion. Moscow is anticipating talks with the US leader's special envoy Steve Witkoff, who is expected to meet President Vladimir Putin this week. On Monday, Trump said in a post to his Truth Social platform that India was "buying massive amounts of Russian Oil" and selling it for "big profits." "They don't care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine," Trump added. "Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA." But he did not provide details on what tariff level he had in mind. For now, an existing 10 percent US tariff on Indian products is expected to rise to 25 percent come Thursday.
