Late ANCWL's Mnganga-Gcabashe hailed for principled leadership, lifelong service
She died at her KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) home at the age of 64, after undergoing an undisclosed medical procedure.
Mnganga-Gcabashe's last public appearance was more than a week ago at the Africa Travel Indaba in Durban.
An anti-apartheid activist, Mnganga-Gcabashe also served as the chairperson of the portfolio committee on tourism and was a member of the ANC's national executive committee (NEC).
She's been hailed for her principled leadership and lifelong community service.
President Cyril Ramaphosa and Deputy President Paul Mashatile both believe her contributions to the struggles for gender equality and non-racialism will be part of her legacy.
ANC spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri, said Mnganga-Gcabashe's passing leaves a deep void.
'She was a beacon of calm in turbulent times, a voice of reason when the noise was loud, and a steady hand in the rebuilding of our country's democracy. She did not enter politics for position or prestige. She was called by her community, elected by residents to represent them in peace committees during some of the darkest years of political violence in KwaZulu-Natal.'
'PROFOUND VOID'
Parliament and political parties have joined in the tributes pouring in for Mnganga-Gcabashe.
Parliament's presiding officers said she has left a 'profound void' in the parliamentary community and the nation.
Parliament spokesperson, Moloto Mothapo, said parliament's presiding officers learnt with shock of Mnganga-Gcabashe's passing.
'They said that honourable Mnganga-Gcabashe was the embodiment of dignified public service. She served in parliament with humility and unwavering dedication. In every committee she led, she was firm yet fair, and she led with compassion and strong principle.'
The MK Party also sent its condolences to her family and colleagues in the ANC.

City accused of wasting money investigating its forensic investigators
GFIS was formed in 2016. It was meant to save the city from losing money through corruption and fraud. While the City of Johannesburg is facing financial challenges, it has spent R12 million investigating its own corruption-fighting unit, Group Forensic Investigation Services (GFIS). In a statement on Monday, ActionSA accused the City of Johannesburg of wasting money on investigating GFIS. GFIS has been accused of carrying out spying activities on some ANC councillors, but there has not been tangible evidence despite numerous investigations. 'We strongly encourage those seeking to continue this witch-hunt to instead demand answers as to why over R12 million has been squandered on it to date, with no preliminary report ever seeing the light of day and, after years of work, making no progress. 'This witch-hunt, set to cost residents a total of R40 million or more, simply cannot be justified and, given the city's dismal balance sheet, is an expenditure it cannot afford for what is nothing more than a vendetta-driven exercise that was rightly questioned and suspended pending a review,' said the party's Marcel Countriers. GFIS is one of Herman Mashaba's legacy projects in the City of Johannesburg. He launched this corruption-busting unit to fight the abuse of municipal funds. 'Unsurprisingly, attempts to exacerbate the city's current regression have found eager champions in failed former mayor Thapelo Amad, who seems determined to accelerate the decline through unscrupulous demands for pointless witch-hunts. 'This is only aimed at distracting from the fight against corruption by unjustly targeting the very efforts that put an end to the large-scale corruption which brought Johannesburg to its knees,' he said. The controversy centers around comments made by ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, suggesting that individuals who are members of both the ANC and SACP and deployed in Cabinet positions may have to choose between the two parties. The SACP's decision to contest the 2026 elections independently was made during their elective conference. Historically, the SACP has been a key partner in the tripartite alliance with the ANC and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu). Next Stay Close ✕ SACP spokesperson Mbulelo Mandlana responded to Mbalula's assertions, saying that the ANC Secretary-General has been "careless" with his statements. "He is making false claims," Mandlana said. "The process of the elections and deployment is not exclusively for the ANC, it involves the alliance as well…in the past ANC officials have made these kinds of statements and they help no one…The process of the elections and deployment is not exclusively for the ANC, it involves the alliance as well. He is starting a witch-hunt that we can't afford…It's a futile attempt to move the SACP away from its conference resolutions,' Mandlana said. Mandlana emphasised that being a member of the SACP and holding a government position is not a punishable offense. Mbalula, however, stood firm on his stance, warning SACP officials to make up their minds on whether they are still with the ANC or with the SACP. "In our view, the resolution of the SACP is forcing members to choose between the ANC and the SACP," Mbalula said. He questioned what the SACP wanted to achieve by contesting elections and emphasised that the alliance could not function as usual, while one of its partners contested elections outside of the collective. 'Is it important that the communist party understand the implications of their decision,' Mbalula said. A senior ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) member revealed that there were talks within the party to strip SACP members who hold government positions of their jobs and reserve those positions exclusively for ANC members. "Comrades are grappling with the fact that SACP comrades in government should make their own decision as to where they want to be," the official said. Cosatu spokesperson Matthew Parks said that that federation was still discussing the matter of elections, including the SACP Special National Congress resolution to contest elections. 'We've convened a Special Central Executive Committee to discuss it and will be holding our Central Committee in September where further discussions will take place on it. These will then go to our National Congress next year which would have the final say on it.
