Liz Truss slams beloved UK event claiming it was made by people who 'hate Britain'
She managed to take a swipe at the NHS, Isembard Kingdom Brunel, Shakespeare, Peter Pan, Jerusalem, Mary Poppins, Elgar, Pink Floyd, The Clash, James Bond and the Queen all in one sentence Liz Truss has slammed the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony, claiming it was made by people who "hate Britain." The former Prime Minister, who was ousted after 49 days, claimed the performance, watched and beloved by millions, was out of touch with the views of Brits. She'd been asked by hard right podcaster Ben Shapiro whether she agreed with the NHS being such a focus of the celebration of the best of British. And she managed to take a swipe at the NHS, Isembard Kingdom Brunel, Shakespeare, Peter Pan, Jerusalem, Mary Poppins, Elgar, Pink Floyd, The Clash, James Bond and the Queen all in one sentence. "The views expressed in the Olympic ceremony are not those of the average Briton," Ms Truss replied. She added: "The problem is we have an elite that hates Britain, and they have done for some time. And that is the history of Jeremy Corbyn, Keir Starmer. They want to help the human rights of anybody who doesn't live in Britain but they're very reticent to defend our own interests." In 2013, Ms Truss said praised the ceremony for having "seamlessly combined Isambard Kingdom Brunel and William Shakespeare, Tim Berners-Lee and Mary Poppins." And in 2019 she called for the "spirit of the 2012 Olympics - a modern, patriotic, enterprising vision of Britain" to be revived. Ms Truss has been eager to build a profile in the US in recent years - appearing at a number of conferences and giving interviews to a string of pro-Trump outlets. In 2024, she failed to challenge host Steve Bannon, formerly a Trump advisor, on his claim that Tommy Robinson is a "hero". A year later, she again appeared on Bannon's podcast, just hours after he'd been accused of giving a nazi salute at a MAGA rally. At the same conference, she sat down for an interview with the Epoch Times, a far-right media organisation affiliated with the Falun Gong religious movement. Ben Shapiro, a prominent conservative commentator, has made a string of controversial statements, including claiming transgender people have a "mental illness".

Liz Truss suggests 'elite that hates UK' was behind London 2012 opening ceremony
Former PM Liz Truss has taken a brave stance against an unexpected target – the much-loved London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. In a new interview with US right-wing commentator Ben Shapiro, the UK's shortest-serving Prime Minister suggests an 'elite that hates Britain' was behind the event. Oscar-winner Danny Boyle directed the spectacular show that kicked off the summer games in London 13 years ago. His work covered a broad sweep of British culture, from the Industrial Revolution and children's literature to Shakespeare and Mr Bean. But it was one section in particular that really wound up Shapiro – the celebration of the National Health Service. Speaking to Truss, he said the UK is suffering from 'an incredible shyness about championing what Britain is and what it historically has been'. Craig Munro breaks down Westminster chaos into easy to follow insight, walking you through what the latest policies mean to you. Sent every Wednesday. Sign up here. He continued: 'What comes to mind here is when Britain hosted the Olympics, and there was an entire display about the NHS. A gigantic display of dancing syringes and such for the National Health Service. 'This is the country that brought the world the Magna Carta, free speech, Parliament – these are all concepts that built the modern world, all of it. 'And what they chose to celebrate was a giant welfare system that has many women giving birth in hallways.' Truss responded by assuring him: 'The views expressed in the Olympics ceremony are not the views of the average Briton. 'The problem is we have an elite that hates Britain, and they have done for some time.' She mentions Jeremy Corbyn and Keir Starmer as being among the members of this 'elite' who want to 'help the human rights of anyone who doesn't live in Britain'. More Trending You can watch the exchange below from 3:04. Following her resignation after 49 days in office, Truss has increasingly embraced the US right wing and cast herself as a victim of the UK's so-called 'deep state'. During an appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference in February 2024, she stayed silent as former White House strategist Steve Bannon described far-right activist Tommy Robinson as a 'hero'. At the general election less than five months later, she sensationally lost her South West Norfolk seat to Labour's Terry Jermy. Liz Truss criticises ‘multicultural' Olympic ceremony 12 years after praising it
Liz Truss has criticised the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony as not representing 'the views of the average Briton'. The former prime minister suggested that 'the views expressed' at the event were not those shared by people outside of London but of 'an elite that hates Britain', even though she praised the ceremony in 2013. Speaking to Ben Shapiro, a Right-wing US commentator, Ms Truss claimed that the 'elite are trying to suppress' the voices of those in small towns and rural communities. Shapiro, who hosts the Ben Shapiro Show, asked the former Tory leader about the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, which took place in the capital. Former UK PM Liz Truss on what Britain must learn from Trump — The Ben Shapiro Show (@BenShapiroShow) August 11, 2025 He asked: 'Can there be a restoration of a true pride in what Great Britain was and should be in the middle of this bizarre sort of melange of multiculturalism that has taken over London?' Ms Truss replied: 'The views expressed in the Olympic ceremony are not the views of the average Briton. 'The problem is we have an elite that hates Britain, and they have done for some time, that is the history of people like Jeremy Corbyn [and] Keir Starmer. 'They want to help the human rights of anybody who doesn't live in Britain, but they're very reticent about actually defending our own interests. 'We need to galvanise the people who are patriots in our country, but they have been neglected. They generally don't live in London. They live in small towns, they live in rural areas. They don't have much of a voice. And what is happening is the elite are trying to suppress those voices.' But Ms Truss had previously praised the 2012 opening ceremony, which took place shortly before she became an education minister under Lord Cameron. In a speech in 2013, she said: 'Last summer's Olympics opening ceremony seamlessly combined Isambard Kingdom Brunel and William Shakespeare, Tim Berners-Lee and Mary Poppins.' In 2019, she told The Sunday Telegraph: 'I think we need to revive what I call the Olympics 2012 spirit [with] a modern, patriotic, enterprising vision of Britain and we need to use Brexit to achieve that.' The opening ceremony of London 2012 was directed by Danny Boyle and attracted some 900 million viewers. It featured a cameo appearance of Queen Elizabeth II alongside Daniel Craig in his role as James Bond. The pair apparently jumped out of a helicopter together into the Olympic stadium, where the late monarch was wearing the same outfit as she had been when she met Bond in Buckingham Palace. The show also featured references to the novel Peter Pan, the Chariots of Fire film, and several hymns and folk songs such as Jerusalem and Danny Boy. In a segment designed to celebrate the NHS, performers danced in traditional nurse uniforms and white doctors' coats.
