The Kerala High Court has been informed that the government is thinking of notifying snakebite as a notifiable disease under the Kerala Public Health Act, 2023.
'It is also pointed out to us that the Director of Health Services has proposed notifying snakebite envenomation as a notifiable disease under the Kerala Public Health Act, 2023, and the proposal is currently under consideration by the state government," the high court noted, while hearing a suo motu case relating to lack of basic medical facilities to treat victims of snakebites.
The high court had taken cognizance of the issue after an unfortunate incident from 2019 involving a young student who succumbed to a snakebite.
Last week while hearing the issue, the high court went through a circular issued by the Additional Director of General Education dated May 30, 2025, whereby the authority concerned has placed the burden of medical care, training, and related responsibilities upon the school authorities.
Noting that the circular issued by the Additional Director of General Education mainly places responsibility on the school, but it does not provide sufficient guidance to the school in respect of the subject of snakebites, the bench led by Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar has observed, 'Therefore, we are of the opinion that the matter needs to be placed before the Chief Secretary to look into the issue and to consider how, for the effective implementation of the methodology under the Circular, the Local Self Government Department, the Health Department, and the Forest Department can be involved."
The bench also comprising Justice Shoba Annamma Eapen has thus ordered, 'Accordingly, we direct that the Circular dated May 30, 2025, issued by the Additional Director of General Education, be placed before the Chief Secretary, Government of Kerala, to look into the same and issue necessary directions for seeking inputs from the Local Self Government Department, the Health Department, and the Forest Department, so that a robust plan in respect of the above subject matter can be prepared, with the active involvement of all the three departments."

‘108' Arogya Kavacha ambulances will now be run by Health Department
Strengthening emergency healthcare services in Karnataka, the State government has approved the proposal to bring the '108' Arogya Kavacha ambulance service under the direct management of the Health Department, ending its operation under private partnership. A Government Order (GO) to this effect was issued on June 12. This move is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency of the '108' ambulance service while saving nearly ₹250 crore for the State exchequer, Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said in a post on X. According to the GO, a central command and control centre will be established at the State level to manage a fleet of 715 ambulances. This system will be powered by the 112 NG-ERSS software. Additionally, '108' control centres will be established in every district, with the district health officers responsible for operational oversight. Ambulance drivers and nursing staff will be recruited on an outsourced basis at the district level. 'We are beginning this transition in Chamarajanagar district, with a phased implementation across all districts to follow. Furthermore, beyond the '108' fleet, we plan to integrate over 1,000 additional State-owned ambulances under the unified '108 command centre for seamless emergency response,' the Minister said. ₹185 crore approved for Gruha Arogya The State government also approved ₹185 crore for the Statewide implementation of the Gruha Arogya scheme. Following its successful rollout in Kolar district, the Health Department is now expanding the scheme across all districts, with inspection and preparatory work set to begin by the end of this month. As part of the initiative, ASHA workers will visit households to raise awareness about non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and guide individuals aged 30 and above to undergo screenings at Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWCs). The community health officers (CHOs) will screen for 14 NCDs, including hypertension, diabetes, and various forms of cancer. Free medicines will be provided to those diagnosed, ensuring timely treatment and reducing financial burden on families. Health Department does away with 195 ASHA mentors The Health Department has issued an order relieving 195 ASHA mentors, who were working on a contract basis under the National Health Mission (NHM) in the State. The order stated that the responsibilities previously performed by ASHA mentors with nursing qualifications will now be performed by female health workers, senior health inspectors at the primary health centre level and primary health welfare officers and community health officers at the sub-centres. The order stated that these 195 people who have been relieved of their duties can be considered for appointment on a contract basis in the vacant posts of nurses under the NHM in their respective districts on priority, if eligible.

Gujarat Reports Over 200 New Covid Cases In 24 Hours
Ahmedabad: As Covid-19 cases continue to rise across India, the number of active infections has now crossed 6,815 nationwide. In Gujarat, the situation remains under close observation as the state recorded 203 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours till Wednesday. This brings the total number of active cases in Gujarat to 1,281. Of these, 23 patients are currently receiving treatment in hospitals, while the remaining 1,258 are being managed through outpatient-based care (OPD). As many as 149 patients recovered and were discharged during the same period. The state Health Department has noted a slight decline in daily new Covid-19 cases over the past three days, which officials consider an encouraging sign amid the broader national increase. The trend in Gujarat over the past 10 days shows fluctuating but gradually declining number of daily Covid-19 cases. On June 10, 223 new cases were reported, a slight decrease from 235 cases on June 9. The daily case count dropped further on June 8 with 185 cases, followed by 183 on June 7 and 170 on June 6. Earlier this month, on June 1, the state had reported only 55 Covid-19 cases. The active Covid caseload rose steadily through the first week of June, from 320 on June 1 to 1,281 as of June 11, indicating the virus is still circulating actively in the community. With the annual Rath Yatra approaching, state health authorities have issued advisories urging vulnerable population -- including senior citizens and people with pre-existing conditions -- to avoid crowded areas and watch the event from home. State Health Minister Rushikesh Patel has appealed to the people to take sensible precautions as a preventive measure. The Gujarat government is actively preparing for the rising Covid-19 cases by closely monitoring trends, ensuring hospital readiness, and coordinating with health departments across districts. With more than 1,200 active Covid-19 cases in the state, officials have emphasised outpatient-based care to manage the majority of infections, as only a small fraction require hospitalisation. Regular updates are being issued, and health advisories have been circulated, especially for the elderly and immunocompromised patients. Additionally, the state Health department has urged citizens to remain cautious and adhere to preventive measures while also ramping up testing and recovery monitoring across urban and rural areas.
