ED Kochi unit officer named first accused in bribery case; Chartered Accountant arrested
KOCHI: The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) has named an Assistant Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Kochi Unit, as the first accused in a high-profile bribery case involving the extortion of money from a businessman in exchange for halting an ED investigation.
On Saturday, the VACB's Kochi unit arrested Renjith Warrier, a Kochi-based chartered accountant, following the earlier arrest of two other accused. Warrier was taken into custody from his residence on Variyam Road in Kochi.
According to officials, Warrier provided information about the businessman to Wilson, who later posed as a mediator for ED officials and demanded money.
The investigation was launched after a Kottarakara-based businessman, engaged in the export of cashew to African countries, filed a complaint. He had been interrogated by ED Assistant Director Shekar Kumar last year over alleged irregularities in foreign fund transfers.
The ED suspected inflated turnover figures and questioned whether some transactions were unrelated to cashew exports. During the interrogation at the ED's Kochi office, Shekar Kumar-now named as the first accused-allegedly threatened to arrest the businessman and his other family members.
According to the FIR, the second accused, Wilson, a resident of Thammanam, contacted the businessman soon after the interrogation and demanded Rs two crore to end the ED probe.
In an effort to convince the complainant, Wilson also forwarded a copy of the ED's summons. Recently, Wilson contacted the complainant again, this time demanding Rs 2 lakh allegedly meant for Shekar Kumar.
The businessman then approached VACB, prompting a preliminary inquiry.
After verifying the allegations, the agency laid a trap and arrested Wilson on Thursday while accepting the bribe.
The third accused, Mukesh Jain alias Murali, Rajasthan native residing in Kochi-was arrested the following day. He had allegedly instructed the businessman to deposit Rs 50,000 into a bank account in Thane, Maharashtra.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is expanding its investigation into the illegal online betting platforms and is now shifting its focus to endorsements made by former film celebrities and cricketers, according to a report by NDTV Profit. As part of the ongoing investigations into promotional links with banned betting platforms, including 1xBet, FairPlay, Parimatch, and Lotus365, the agency questioned former Indian cricketers like Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina, and Yuvraj Singh, along with actors like Sonu Sood and Urvashi Rautela. Citing an ED official, the report added, "These betting platforms are using surrogate names like 1xbat and 1xbat sporting lines in advertising campaigns. The ads often include QR codes that redirect users to betting sites, blatantly violating Indian law." While notices have been issued to some of the celebrities, others are yet to receive them, the official added. The report said that these platforms often promote themselves as skill-based gaming platforms but operate on luck-based outcomes, by using rigged algorithms that categorise them as gambling operations according to Indian law. The report suggests that initial findings show that these endorsements violate several Indian laws, including the Information Technology (IT) Act, the Foreign Exchange Management Act (Fema), the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), and the Benami Transactions Act. It further stated that such endorsements also violate the advisories that have been issued by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Nitish Katara murder: SC extends interim bail of Vikas Yadav by two weeks
The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended by two weeks the interim bail of a convict undergoing a 25-year jail term in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case to attend to his ailing mother. Vikas Yadav was granted interim bail on April 24 which was extended on May 8. On Tuesday, Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan extended the relief by two more weeks to enable Yadav to attend to his mother, who had undergone surgery at AIIMS in New Delhi. The top court, however, clarified Yadav would not be allowed any more extensions as it posted the matter in July. On April 24, the top court granted interim bail to Yadav to meet his ailing mother and directed that she be examined by a medical board of AIIMS doctors. Imposing conditions, the top court directed the convict to remain confined to his house in Ghaziabad and not get in touch with the case's witnesses, including Katara's mother Neelam Katara. The apex court granted him the relief subject to depositing a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh and a surety of the like amount. Vikas is the son of Uttar Pradesh politician D P Yadav. His cousin Vishal Yadav was also punished for the kidnapping and murder of business executive Katara. The duo was against Katara's alleged affair with Bharti Yadav, sister of Vikas, as they belonged to different castes. Another co-convict Sukhdev Pehalwan was given a 20-year jail term without any remission benefit. Earlier, the Delhi High Court, while upholding the life imprisonment awarded to Vikas and Vishal Yadav by the trial court, specified a 30-year sentence, without any remission, to both of them. It had awarded a 25-year jail term to the third convict, Pehalwan. The Delhi prisons administration had last year rejected Yadav's remission request after his conduct was found to be unsatisfactory.

Woman tied to tree, assaulted over loan repayment in AP's Chittoor; CM Naidu orders strict action
CHITTOOR: A 25-year-old woman was publicly humiliated and assaulted in Narayanapuram village of Kuppam mandal, on Monday. The incident came to light on Tuesday, sparking outrage over the inhumane treatment. The woman was tied to a tree and physically attacked over a debt repayment, allegedly by a man named Munikannappa. The victim has been identified as Sirisha. According to reports, Sirisha's husband, Timmarayappa, had borrowed Rs 80,000 from Munikannappa three years ago. After failing to repay the loan, Timmarayappa abandoned Sirisha and their children, leaving the burden of repayment on her. Despite working as a daily labourer to support her children and repay the debt, Sirisha was subjected to public abuse for the delaying the payment. On Monday afternoon, as she was walking along the road, Munikannappa reportedly verbally abused her, threatened to kill her, and forcibly dragged her to a neem tree, where he tied her up and physically assaulted her. He also allegedly attacked villagers who tried to record the incident on their phones. Local residents immediately informed the Kuppam police, who registered a case under relevant sections of the BNS.
