Kenya's Beatrice Chebet smashes 5,000m world record — first woman under 14 minutes
Chebet, Olympic gold medallist at 5,000 and 10,000m in Paris last year, delivered a devastating finish to become the first woman to break the 14-minute barrier in the event, beating the previous world record of 14:00.21 set by Ethiopia's Gudaf Tsegay on the same Hayward Field track in September 2023.
Chebet, 25, had already broken the 10,000m world record at Hayward Field in May of 2024, when she became the first woman to run under 29 minutes (28:54.14).
Compatriot Agnes Jebet Ngetich was second in 14:01.29 — the third-fastest time ever — and Tsegay was third in 14:04.41.
Chebet was under world-record pace for much of the way. She, Tsegay and Ngetich had broken away from the rest of the field when the pace faded slightly a few laps from the finish.
But Chebet mustered a final flourish — delivering an incredible last lap to pull away mercilessly for the triumph and the world record.
'I'm so happy,' Chebet said, adding that she had been inspired by her own strong performance in Rome last month and compatriot Faith Kipyegon's unsuccessful bid to become the first woman to break four minutes for the mile.
'After running in Rome, I said I have to prepare for a record because in Rome I was just running to win a race, but after running 14:03, I said that I'm capable of running a world record.
'When I was coming here to Eugene, I was coming to prepare to run a world record, and I said I have to try. I said 'If Faith is trying, why not me?'
'And today, I'm so happy because I've achieved being the first woman to run under 14. I'm so happy for myself.' — AFP

US runner Nikki Hiltz questions ‘invasive' sex gene test for women athletes, says better to solve abusive coaches and doping problems
EUGENE (Oregon), Aug 3 — Transgender and non-binary US distance runner Nikki Hiltz criticized World Athletics' plans to introduce gene testing for female athletes on Saturday, saying the move would be a 'slippery slope.' Hiltz was assigned female at birth and came out as transgender and non-binary in 2021, and uses they/them pronouns. The US runner described the introduction of gene tests as 'disappointing.' 'Sex testing is a slippery slope,' Hiltz said after booking their place at the Tokyo World Championships with victory in the women's 1,500m at the US trials in Oregon. 'Obviously, I'm gonna do it. I'm not gonna, like, protest it or anything. I just don't like the precedent that it sets,' they said. World Athletics has said its test – which is carried out using a cheek swab or blood test – is 'extremely accurate,' with false positives or negatives seen as 'extremely unlikely'. Hiltz, however, expressed concern that other sporting federations might use more invasive techniques. 'If this is the top (of the sport) setting these rules, how does this trickle down to the NCAA or youth programs?' they asked. 'Sex testing can be very invasive. Like this is just like a harmless cheek swab. Maybe for different organizations, it's not that. And that scares me.' Hiltz called on resources diverted to gene testing to be used for other issues affecting women's sport. 'The biggest thing for me is it's not solving a problem that exists,' they said. 'So what is this time, energy, money going for? It's not a problem that we face. 'What we do face is abusive coaches. Doping allegations. Why aren't we putting our time and energy, money, into that? It's pretty disappointing,' they added. World Athletics' test will test for the SRY gene, which is part of the Y chromosome and causes male characteristics to develop. If the athlete tests negative for the Y chromosome they are eligible to compete in the female category in world ranking competitions. If it is positive, they can only compete in the female category in non-world ranking competitions or in another category other than the female one. Athletics has long considered introducing eligibility criteria for women's events, amid questions over biological advantages for transgender athletes and those with differences of sex development (DSD). Transgender women who have gone through male puberty are currently banned by World Athletics from competing in women's events, while the federation requires female DSD athletes whose bodies produce high testosterone levels to take medication to lower them in order to be eligible. — AFP

US swimmers set new world record for 4x100m mixed relay in Singapore
SINGAPORE, Aug 3 — The United States set a new world record in sealing a dominant victory in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay at the world championships on Saturday. The US team took gold in Singapore in 3min 18.48sec, beating Australia's previous leading time of 3:18.83 set in 2023. The 'neutral athletes' team from Russia finished second in 3:19.68, with France third in 3:21.35. The American team of Jack Alexy, Patrick Sammon, Kate Douglass and Torri Huske took control from the start and from then on their battle was against the clock. 'We all came out tonight wanting to get that win for Team USA and with the world record, we all knew in the back of our mind we had that ability,' said Douglass. 'I'm really happy with how it turned out.' The US topped the medal table at the start of the day and their latest success consolidated their lead heading into the final day of the championships. Runner Sha'Carri Richardson's ‘domestic violence' drama overshadows US trials
EUGENE (United States), Aug 2 — US sprint star Sha'Carri Richardson was at the centre of a new controversy yesterday after it emerged she was arrested for allegedly assaulting boyfriend Christian Coleman shortly before this week's US Track and Field Championships in Oregon. Police in Washington State said the 25-year-old 100m world champion was detained on Sunday night after clashing with Coleman as the couple traveled through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. An account of Richardson's arrest report emailed to AFP by Port of Seattle Police said security video footage captured Richardson in a verbal altercation with Coleman as the duo exited a security screening. 'Richardson is following and getting close to Coleman several times as Coleman appears to be trying to walk away,' the report reads. 'Richardson then pushes Coleman hard enough that it sends him crashing into a nearby column.... she again pushes Coleman, again hard enough that it sends him flying a few feet away.' Richardson is then seen throwing a set of headphones at Coleman, who did not want to participate in the investigation and 'declined to be a victim,' the officer's report reads. Richardson was detained and released on Monday following the incident, which the police report described as domestic violence. News of Richardson's arrest came as USA Track and Field officials said she had scratched from her remaining 100m rounds as well as tomorrow's 200m. However USATF officials later confirmed that Richardson—who is already qualified for the 100m at September's Tokyo World Championships—had changed her mind and would now race in the 200m this weekend. 'She initially told us she would not run in the 200m, but she never formally scratched. She has since informed us she will now enter the 200m,' a USATF spokesperson told AFP. 'Under the radar' It is just the latest controversy to embroil Richardson during her career. She was infamously barred from competing at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 after testing positive for marijuana after her victory at the US trials as she grieved the death of her biological mother. In 2023, she was removed from an American Airlines flight after an argument with a flight attendant. The Texan star had given no clue of her latest controversy as she spoke to journalists on Thursday following her opening 100m heat. She did not mention her arrest earlier in the week and was not asked about it. As a defending world champion, Richardson already has a bye into the World Championships in Japan for the 100m, and was under no obligation to race in Eugene this week. Richardson said on Thursday she had been happy to compete in Eugene knowing that her place on the team for Tokyo was already assured. 'USA is one of the hardest teams to make, so it definitely is a kind of a release of pressure knowing I have a bye,' she told AFP. 'It feels really good to not have that pressure and still be able to go to Tokyo. 'Right now I'm cruising under the radar, but when it's time to hit—it's going to be a bang where y'all see my name,' she said. Richardson's dramatic day came as men's 100m world champion Noah Lyles withdrew from the remaining rounds of the short sprint. Lyles, who is also already qualified for Tokyo, will race in the 200m on Sunday. Olympic women's 200m champion Gabby Thomas has also withdrawn from the rest of the 100m, and will focus on the 200m. — AFP
