I am no longer surprised when I encounter a full-time professional in America with a second career on the go. So far this year, examples have included a media lawyer who is also a real estate agent; a hospital lab technician with a coding gig; and a lawyer with a TikTok business account.
Rising costs and house price inflation, combined with more flexible working policies since the pandemic, have created fertile ground for the ascent of the side hustle.
Last month, 8.8 million Americans reported working multiple jobs, or 5.4 per cent of the employed population, up from 7.8 million in 2019.
