Now, get AI-generated sketches made in Mario Miranda style

Panaji: It was in March this year that the world was captivated by the whimsical AI-generated art trend of Studio Ghibli-styled images. Now, the Mario Gallery in Goa is breathing new life into the legacy of Mario Miranda, the famed Goan cartoonist whose sketches, caricatures, and portraits have delighted generations. Using the power of artificial intelligence, the Mario Gallery has crafted a unique experience with the help of the existing vast archival treasure trove of 13,000 original Mario Miranda drawings. The gallery's curators have meticulously trained an AI model to emulate the master's signature style. Gerard da Cunha, curator of the Mario Gallery, said that it took three months to master the art. The tech will be launched on Aug 23 at 4pm at the gallery in Torda. 'Anyone can come and have a Mario sketch of themselves generated,' he told TOI . The AI model is built using a deep learning technique known as style transfer and generative modelling. By feeding the system thousands of Mario Miranda's original sketches, caricatures, and portraits, the AI learns to recognise the unique features that define his art such as his delicate line work, shading and composition. When a visitor submits a photo or a selfie, the AI analyses the facial features and then reconstructs the image by applying Mario's distinctive sketching style, producing a hand-drawn effect that feels authentic. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo This process involves complex algorithms that mimic artistic strokes and patterns of Miranda's hand, making every portrait an emulation of his art. 'This innovative project speaks volumes about the evolving role of AI in art and culture. While much of the discourse around artificial intelligence focuses on its disruptive potential or fears of takeover, the Mario Gallery's initiative showcases a practical application. It's a fun thing where people can participate in getting a sketch that Mario would've done,' Da Cunha said. Miranda was an Indian cartoonist and painter based in Loutolim, Goa. He had been a regular with The Times of India and other newspapers in the then-Bombay. Miranda was known for his detailed depictions of Goan life and his work was celebrated globally. He was also a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
