Colombian president condemns attack on opposition candidate Miguel Uribe, demands investigation
BOGOTA: Colombian President Gustavo Petro has condemned the assassination attempt on opposition presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, who was shot in the head during a campaign event in Bogota on Saturday.
In a televised address, Petro called for an urgent and thorough investigation, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.
'No resource or time should be spared, not a single peso and not a single moment of energy, to dedicate it exclusively to finding the mastermind behind the murder.
'Whatever his political thoughts and positions, he is first and foremost a person, a human being, and therefore has the absolute right to live,' he said.
Uribe, 39, was reportedly approached from behind by a lone assailant who fired six shots, two of which struck him.
Video footage shared on social media showed him bleeding from the head and back as his security detail rushed him into a vehicle and transported him to hospital.
The Fundacion Santa Fe hospital, where Uribe is receiving treatment, confirmed in a statement that he was admitted in critical condition and was undergoing neurosurgical and peripheral vascular procedures.
'We have received Mr Miguel Uribe Turbay at our Emergency Department. He is receiving priority care from our team of specialists,' it said.
Uribe's wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, issued an emotional appeal on his official X account, asking the public to pray for his recovery.
'Miguel is currently fighting for his life. Let us ask God to guide the hands of the doctors who are treating him,' she wrote.
Bogota Mayor Carlos Fernando Galan confirmed the arrest of the suspected attacker, while the Attorney General's Office later identified the assailant as a 15-year-old in possession of a 9mm Glock pistol.
Colombian Defence Minister Pedro Sanchez said the suspect is in custody and investigations are ongoing to determine whether others were involved.
'The investigation continues unabated, and we will get to the bottom of it. There will be no room for impunity,' he posted on X.
The attack drew widespread condemnation from leaders across Latin America, including the presidents of Chile, Ecuador and Mexico.
United States (US) Secretary of State Marco Rubio blamed 'violent leftist rhetoric' for the attack, urging Petro to 'dial back the inflammatory rhetoric and protect Colombian officials.'
Uribe is a member of the Democratic Centre party, a right-wing opposition group.

China, US Agree On Plan To Ease Trade Tensions After Talks In London
WORLD ISTANBUL, June 11 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- China and the United States (US) have agreed on a framework and implementation plan after two days of trade talks in the UK, China's top trade envoy Li Chenggang said late Tuesday, Anadolu Ajansi reported. 'The two sides agreed, in principle, on the framework for implementing the consensus of the two heads of state in their firm call on the 5th of June, as well as the consensus of the meeting in Geneva,' Li told journalists in London. Li said the Chinese and US teams worked 'very diligently' and had 'very in-depth exchanges' over the past few days, adding that their communication was 'very professional, rational, in-depth and candid.' He expressed hope that the progress in the talks would be 'conducive to increasing trust' between the two countries, to promote stable trade and economic relations, and contribute positively to global economic development. A new round of trade talks between the US and China aiming to reach a deal started on Monday in London. The talks were expected to revolve around China's restrictions on exports of rare earths to the US and Washington's restrictions on some tech exports to China, as well as the dispute over tariffs. The meeting followed US President Donald Trump's phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping last week, with Trump saying later that the conversation "resulted in a very positive conclusion for both countries." The two sides are aiming to build on a 12th May deal struck in Geneva, when they agreed to a 90-day suspension of most duties and to roll back measures imposed since early April after Trump announced "reciprocal" tariffs on US trading partners.

Teen pleads ‘not guilty' to shooting Colombian presidential candidate
BOGOTA: A fifteen-year-old boy accused of trying to assassinate a Colombian presidential candidate pled 'not guilty' on Tuesday, the prosecutor's office told AFP. The teen was formally charged with the attempted homicide of 39-year-old conservative candidate Miguel Uribe, who was shot twice in the head on Saturday and is fighting for his life in hospital. The boy was also charged with carrying a firearm. Footage from the scene showed Uribe addressing supporters in western Bogota when a youth rushed toward him firing at least eight shots. Uribe was hit twice in the head and once in the leg. The alleged gunman was apprehended by security guards and a Glock nine-millimeter pistol was recovered. Police believe the teen was a 'sicario' or hitman working for money. As a minor he faces eight years in detention if found guilty.
