Schar extends Newcastle stay until summer of 2026
Newcastle defender Fabian Schar has extended his contract at the club until the summer of 2026.
The Switzerland international joined the Magpies from Spanish club Deportivo La Coruna in July 2018.
Schar, 33, has made 221 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle and recently helped them win the Carabao Cup, the club's first domestic trophy since they lifted the FA Cup in 1955.
His previous deal had been set to expire at the end of June.
"It's been a very good few weeks for everybody at Newcastle after winning the Carabao Cup and I'm really happy now to sign another contract with this amazing club," Schar said.
He has played 33 times for Newcastle this term, with the club fifth in the Premier League and challenging for a place in next season's Champions League.
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe added: "Fabian has been outstanding in my time at the club. As well as his performances on the pitch, he has shown a fantastic attitude in the group.
"He has been the heartbeat of the club's season so far, and he'll continue to be a key player for us as we strive to finish as high in the table as possible."

Emmanuel Macron invites wife Brigitte to stand by his side to celebrate soccer championship, week after infamous viral slap clip
French President Emmanuel Macron invited his wife to stand by his side Sunday to celebrate the Parisian soccer team winning the Champions League at the Elysee Palace, just a week after the first lady was caught slapping the president on video. Macron gently took his wife Brigitte's hand in front of dozens of cameras as the couple cheered on the victorious team, following a tense week of speculation about their relationship status amid their public quarrel. The shocking video showed Brigitte take both her hands and smash them into Macron's face as they were departing the presidential jet that had just landed in Hanoi for an official visit with Vietnamese dignitaries last Sunday. Footage of the soccer celebration this Sunday shared by the Daily Mail shows a much happier couple. With a broad smile, the French president encouraged his wife to join him as he stood with the players from the triumphant Paris Saint-Germain team. The pair tried to play off last week's highly publicized slap, as playful rough housing, then as Russian disinformation, but eventually conceded that the camera caught them mid-domestic squabble. 'At the beginning, the Elysee [Palace] denied the truth of the images, suggesting a video generated by AI and relayed by pro-Russian accounts before finally authenticating the sequence which [they said] evoked a moment of 'complicity,'' said news outlet Breves de Presse in a post on X Monday. 3 The shocking moment that First Lady Brigitte Macron slaps her husband French President Emmanuel Macron. 'Make sure the door remains closed,' Trump chuckled in the Oval Office while responding to a question about the stunning video of Madame Macron's assault. 'That was not good,' Trump said of the slap video. 'No, I spoke to him and he's fine, they're fine. They're two really good people. I know them very well. And, I don't know what that was all about, but I know him very well and they're fine.' The pleasant meeting with the team came during a tumultuous time on the streets. Two fans died and a police officer is in a coma after mass nationwide celebrations turned into violent riots, French authorities said Sunday.

Why Sea Eagles don't need to rush Turbo back
Teammates are confident Lehi Hopoate can thrive at fullback again on Thursday night if Tom Trbojevic is ruled out of Manly's trip to Newcastle to take on the desperate Knights. Trbojevic missed the terrific win over Brisbane after he aggravated a corked thigh in the loss to Parramatta last month. Sea Eagles coach Anthony Seibold said his superstar fullback would play if Manly's game was on Sunday, but the short turnaround could mean he is rested to ensure he's fully fit when he returns. Trbojevic didn't train with the team at Monday's session in Brookvale but was spotted in the gym, with the club's medical staff expected to give him up to the captain's run on Wednesday to determine whether he's fit enough to play. In better news, Jake Trbojevic trained freely on Monday after missing the past two matches while in concussion protocols, with the Sea Eagles backing Hopoate to star again at the back if he's asked to play there. The young gun has done a tremendous job when he's moved from left wing to fullback but he saved his best for Saturday night with 224m, five tackle busts, two try assists and a line break with his first carry when he charged through Payne Haas in the opening set. 'He really set the tone in his first carry of the game when he poked his nose through,' five-eighth Luke Brooks said. 'Wherever he plays, he always does the job for the team and he's playing outstanding footy. 'For such a young bloke to be able to do that every week means he's a special player. 'He's a great fullback, so whenever Tom's out, he just slots in there really well. I think he's getting better and better every week.' Meanwhile, Dragons back-rower Jaydn Su'A will miss Friday's trip to take on the Dolphins after the club confirmed he suffered a low-grade syndesmosis injury to his left ankle during the win over Newcastle. Su'A battled on bravely for 20 minutes and scored a try before he eventually came off, with the injury likely to rule him out of contention for an Origin recall.
