Karnal (Haryana) [India], June 30 (ANI): India delivered its best-ever performance at the Asian Para-Badminton Championship 2025 in Thailand, returning home with an impressive haul of 27 medals, four golds, 10 silvers, and 13 bronzes. The standout performer was Paris Paralympic gold medalist Nitesh Kumar, who clinched a remarkable three gold medals, underlining his dominance and composure under pressure.
Speaking about the mental aspect of competing in gold-medal matches, Nitesh shared insights into how he has evolved with experience, 'It's not a lot of difference for me, but of course, sometimes when things don't work our way, we start to doubt ourselves. That pressure of coming so close and losing the gold medal gets into your head and things get very difficult.''Over the years, playing so many finals, I just prepare myself not to get overexcited or not to get too much ahead of time and just focus point by point and then winning it. So yeah, I think it adds on to some pressure, but I actually enjoy playing the gold medal matches now because there's a lot of mental thing involved and then just fighting. I think that brings the best form out of it,' he added.
The medal tally not only set a new benchmark but also marked India's return to the continental stage after an eight-year gap. Reflecting on the journey, Nitesh said, 'It was a very good tournament and a great result for us. The last edition was in 2016, I don't remember the exact count but that was actually my second international tournament, and I lost in the quarterfinals.'
'We missed an edition due to COVID, and now coming back with 27 medals is a massive achievement. Personally, I feel we could've done slightly better with the number of gold medals but overall, the team environment was positive, competitive, and supportive, which made this campaign very fruitful. We'll look to build on this for future championships,' he noted.
In the men's doubles SL3-SL4 category, Nitesh paired up with Sukant Kadam. The duo battled through a thrilling final against fellow Indians Jagadesh Dilli and Naveen Sivakumar, emerging victorious in a hard-fought three-setter that ended 21-17, 11-21, 21-11.
'Sukant and I decided to pair up just before the tournament. So yeah, initially, one or two matches, we were focusing on gelling up and getting comfortable together and to know how we are playing because over the years, we might have changed in a different way for playing,' Nitesh said.'I had a tactical plan for the final, the hall was windy, so choosing the right side was crucial. Interestingly, I did the opposite of what I'd done all tournament and chose the tougher side first. We managed to win a close set there, but lost the second due to overconfidence; however, we stayed positive. By the third set, we were up 11-3 at the interval and knew we just had to stay composed to seal the win. It was a sweet victory.'
India also bagged bronze in the same category, with Mohammad Arwaz Ansari and Abhijeet Sakhuja securing a spot on the podium.
Nitesh's form remained unstoppable in the men's singles SL3 category, where he defeated Indonesia's rising star Muh Ai Imran in straight sets.
'There was different pressure in the final because I was playing someone new to the international scene who was unbeaten and had defeated top players. I started by overthinking, expecting too much, but once I settled into my game, it got easier,' he said.
In the mixed doubles SL3-SU5 event, India achieved a clean sweep of the podium. Nitesh, alongside Thulasimathi Murgesan, clinched the gold in a dominant straight-sets win over Ruthick Raghupathi and Manasi Joshi.
With three gold medals to his name, Nitesh Kumar once again proved why he is one of the most decorated para-badminton players of his generation. (ANI)

"There's more to come": Woakes cautions India of Stokes threat ahead of second Test

Birmingham [UK], June 30 (ANI): England's experienced pacer Chris Woakes has issued a captain Ben Stokes warning and cautioned about the threat that he poses with the Dukes ahead of the second Test against India at Edgbaston in Birmingham for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. With the ball, Stokes emerged as England's biggest threat in the first innings and controlled the flow of the game with his precise line and lengths. He rattled India's top order and scalped priceless wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, Karun Nair and Shardul Thakur to return with figures of 4/66 in 15 overs. Stokes led from the front, putting in the hard yards with the ball to set the tone for England, who eventually forced India to surrender to a 5-wicket defeat by gunning down a 371-run target, their second-highest chase in the format. 'Yeah, he was incredible without him having played a load of cricket leading into the Test match, for him to come in and do what he did and hit his straps at a good pace. He's obviously fit and lean at the minute, looking really strong, which is great for us,' Woakes told reporters in a press conference. 'Obviously, we want him to play every test match that we play. But also, obviously, we want him to be that seamer who can bowl his overs and do what we know he can do, which he did last week. I thought he was amazing on a good pitch. He looked threatening every time he had the ball, the newer ball or the older ball. I think that's good to have. We all know what Stokes is capable of, but it's great to have your leader being able to grab the ball like that and showing you the way sometimes,' he added. Stokes didn't enjoy the luxury of much game time during the buildup to the series. After tearing his left hamstring in New Zealand back in December, Stokes returned in the one-off Test against Zimbabwe last month at Trent Bridge. To be fit and fire all cylinders for England this summer, Stokes took various measures, which included discarding alcohol during his last injury rehabilitation. Woakes believes the amount of hard work the English skipper has put in is echoed in his performance. 'So, yeah, we know what he's capable of, and it was great that he showed that last week at Headingley. It was really good. Yeah, I mean, he doesn't do things in half-measures, does he? When he's training, he's training. If he has time off, he has time off. But when he's there and he's doing his work, it's a real pleasure to watch sometimes,' Woakes said. 'Yeah, I could sense it was coming. He's certainly been training hard. You can see the physical state he's in. He's in really good condition. I think, obviously, the injuries that he's had, he's probably just doubled down on his fitness to make sure he's in the best shape possible to be able to lead this team at his best,' he continued. 'He certainly did that last week, and hopefully, there's more of that to come for the rest of this series. I look at the best players in the world, and they're always trying to get better, and he's always been the same, Ben,' he added. Ahead of the second Test, which is scheduled to kick off on Wednesday, England named an unchanged XI with hopes of getting a firm grip on the series. England playing XI for the second Test against India: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (wk), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir. India's assistant coach Ten Doeschate drops hints on India's probable XI for second Test against England

Birmingham [UK], June 30 (ANI): Ahead of the second Test at Edgbaston on July 2, India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate on Monday shed light on players that are likely to be included in the playing XI for the second Test of the five-match series. India will take on England in the second Test of the five-match series at Edgbaston, Birmingham, which will be played from July 2 to 6. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Ten Doeschate hinted that left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh, all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and spinner Kuldeep Yadav are the likely players who can get a chance to feature in the playing XI for the visitors in the Edgbaston Test. 'I think I've said yes to every single player. Again, going back to the spin combination, if we are going to go two spinners, Arshdeep provides a little bit more control. You've got a left-armer running in over the wickets, if we do want to put our eggs in that basket. I don't know if you saw the seamers, they all had a good trot out today. We believe that they're all present and eligible for selection. Looking over the five series, we need to manage the five seamers effectively. We do have the out-and-out seamers. But Arshdeep is definitely in the selection mix for this Test,' the assistant coach said. Furthermore, the 45-year-old stated that Nitish Kumar Reddy is their 'premium batting all-rounder' and has a very good chance of getting into the line-up for the second match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. 'He's very close to getting a game. He was fantastic in Australia. Coming into the team and playing the way he did. We just felt, on balance, for the last game, we wanted to go with the bowling all-rounder. We thought Shardul Thakur was slightly ahead on the bowling front. We're exploring ways to reconfigure the puzzle. We can get a batting all-rounder in, and Nitish is our premium batting all-rounder at the moment. I would say it's a very good chance to play this test,' he added. In the end, Ten Doeschate discussed Kuldeep Yadav's chances of featuring in the playing XI for the visitors in the Edgbaston Test. 'We'd love to get him into the team. Playing two all-rounders in the last game, we're desperate. It would have been nice to have a spin in the last game. Also, we're trying to make the best assessment of what we see in front of us. We know we're going to need three seamers in this game. It's just how you manage that 6-7-8 role. The guys are going to play that role. Whether we can fit Kuldeep in now or save him for later in the series, if the weather stays like I said, it should turn somewhere along the line. You talked about the number 6-7-8,' he concluded. Squads: India: Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (VC & WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav. England: Ben Stokes (capt), Jofra Archer, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.
