India's assistant coach Ten Doeschate drops hints on India's probable XI for second Test against England
India will take on England in the second Test of the five-match series at Edgbaston, Birmingham, which will be played from July 2 to 6.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Ten Doeschate hinted that left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh, all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and spinner Kuldeep Yadav are the likely players who can get a chance to feature in the playing XI for the visitors in the Edgbaston Test.
'I think I've said yes to every single player. Again, going back to the spin combination, if we are going to go two spinners, Arshdeep provides a little bit more control. You've got a left-armer running in over the wickets, if we do want to put our eggs in that basket. I don't know if you saw the seamers, they all had a good trot out today. We believe that they're all present and eligible for selection. Looking over the five series, we need to manage the five seamers effectively. We do have the out-and-out seamers. But Arshdeep is definitely in the selection mix for this Test,' the assistant coach said.
Furthermore, the 45-year-old stated that Nitish Kumar Reddy is their 'premium batting all-rounder' and has a very good chance of getting into the line-up for the second match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
'He's very close to getting a game. He was fantastic in Australia. Coming into the team and playing the way he did. We just felt, on balance, for the last game, we wanted to go with the bowling all-rounder. We thought Shardul Thakur was slightly ahead on the bowling front. We're exploring ways to reconfigure the puzzle. We can get a batting all-rounder in, and Nitish is our premium batting all-rounder at the moment. I would say it's a very good chance to play this test,' he added.
In the end, Ten Doeschate discussed Kuldeep Yadav's chances of featuring in the playing XI for the visitors in the Edgbaston Test.
'We'd love to get him into the team. Playing two all-rounders in the last game, we're desperate. It would have been nice to have a spin in the last game. Also, we're trying to make the best assessment of what we see in front of us. We know we're going to need three seamers in this game. It's just how you manage that 6-7-8 role. The guys are going to play that role. Whether we can fit Kuldeep in now or save him for later in the series, if the weather stays like I said, it should turn somewhere along the line. You talked about the number 6-7-8,' he concluded.

‘England will be very, very happy if Jasprit Bumrah plays only three Tests': Ian Bell
That Jasprit Bumrah will only play three of the five Test matches of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy is something that India have maintained since before the start of the series. However, former England batsman Ian Bell has said he would be 'amazed' if this actually ends up happening, especially if he sits out matches with the series on the line. 'I'd be amazed if he (Bumrah) only plays three Tests this summer,' Bell is quoted as saying by PTI. 'He's the best fast bowler in the world, and if he doesn't play, England will be very, very happy.' India head coach Gautam Gambhir had said before the series that managing Bumrah's workload is important. However, there have been growing worries about how poorly India will fare without the 31-year-old in the squad considering the huge gap in quality between him and the rest of the pacers. Bumrah boasted an economy of 3.36 in 24.4 overs in the first England innings of the first Test, in which he also took five wickets. Mohammed Siraj went at 4.51 in 27 overs while Prasidh Krishna had an aeconomy of 6.40m in 20. Shardul Thakur had bowled just six overs. It wasn't much better in the second, with Siraj doing a slightly better job of keeping up with Bumrah. 'Of course, you want to protect him (Bumrah), but if the series is on the line and he's fit, he has to play,' said Bell. Bell, who scored 7727 runs for England in 118 Tests with 22 centuries and 46 half-centuries, also said that Kuldeep Yadav will cause a lot of problems for the host batters at Edgbaston if he plays in the second Test, particularly their lower order. 'It (wicket) won't turn early, but by day four or five, it could take spin,' Bell said. He believes this makes a strong case for Kuldeep's inclusion. 'Kuldeep is bowling beautifully. Someone who can spin it both ways is always a threat – especially to England's lower order.' Bell added that India should consider the wrist-spinner as an 'attacking option to fight fire with fire.'

'Still Inexperienced...": Ex-England Star's Clear Verdict On Shubman Gill As Captain Ahead Of 2nd Test
Former England cricketer Monty Panesar has advised India to be ruthless with the new ball and to put early pressure on the English batters is the way to win the second Test at Edgbaston, which starts on Wednesday. Despite posting a combined 835 runs across their two innings, India's bowling attack, barring Jasprit Bumrah, who delivered Zak Crawley's wicket in the first over of England's first innings, failed to impose themselves on the English batters, allowing them to navigate the tricky play and unleashing attack as the ball wore on, which, in an exclusive conversation with IANS, Panesar described as 'Smarter Bazball.' 'What we have seen with England, they play the first 10 overs very slowly because the ball moves around; it swings, and when the ball doesn't do as much, they will start accelerating the scoring. So what they're doing is they're playing smarter 'Bazball' cricket. 'What India must do is, with the new ball, they need to take wickets. That's what they've got to do and if they don't do that, I think they're going to always play catch up. They need, like they did in Australia, they were taking wickets with the new ball. Same thing they have to do here. The way to win Test matches is that India must take wickets with the new ball,' Panesar told IANS. It certainly was not a great start to Shubman Gill's captaincy as Test captain as India began their 2025-27 World Test Championship Cycle with the loss. Panesar believes that although Gill is inexperienced, his efforts should go into curating the best bowling attack. He believes Prasidh Krishna needs to be much better in English conditions and Kuldeep Yadav's inclusion as the attacking spinner can be a boost and also allow Ravindra Jadeja to take more wickets. 'He's still inexperienced as a captain. I think Prasidh Krishna bowls the Australian length. He doesn't bowl the UK length, which is slightly fuller, top of off stump. That's why I think if he does play, he needs to bowl the ball fuller. He needs to take wickets in his first spell. He can't be taking wickets, you know, later on. ' Kuldeep Yadav is going to be the attacking spinner if he plays, and Shubhman Gill, you should use him in an attacking role. I think Jadeja will definitely play because of his batting; he could be the defensive spinner. Jadeja being the defensive spinner, I think that will help him to take wickets. "So, if Kuldeep Yadav plays, Gill must use him as the attacking spinner, have attacking field sets. Have a field set that looks to take wickets. Kuldeep Yadav's job is to take wickets,' he added.

Why Indian Bowlers Faltered? Irfan Pathan's Explanation: 'Executing The Length'
Last Updated: India lost the first Test against England at Headingley. Irfan Pathan emphasised Indian bowlers must adjust lengths based on batsmen for success in SENA countries. The Indian men's cricket team did not manage to take all 20 wickets in the first Test of the five-match series for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England at Headingley, Leeds. India ended up on the losing side as England batters completed a historic chase to go up 1-0 in the series. In the first innings, Jasprit Bumrah took five wickets as Mohammed Siraj got two and Prasidh Krishna claimed three. In the second innings, Bumrah and Siraj remained wicketless as Prasish and Shardul Thakur scalped two each. Ahead of the second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham, which starts on Wednesday, July 2, Irfan Pathan opened up on the nuances of pace bowling and looked at possibly why Indian bowlers faltered to take wickets. 'When it comes to bowling, they bowl well in patches. That is one thing. Executing the length according to the batsmen, which we lacked," Irfan said during an interaction facilitated by Sony Sports. 'What was the problem is bowling to Zach Crawley and bowling to Ben Duckett who are partners. They both have different reach," he explained. 'So, first of all, you need to have adjustment between right-hand, left-hand combination. Obviously, that's a line which you need to adjust as a bowler in a same over. Suppose if I'm bowling first ball to Zach Crawley, he will change the strike to Ben Duckett and in the second ball, Ben Duckett will come to the crease." 'The similar length which Zach Crawley plays on the front foot, exactly the same length Ben Duckett is cutting. So, adjusting the particular length is very very important and that's the key for all our success in the history when you go to SENA countries because the pitches are true. You need to actually bowl that right length," he added. Irfan said that bowling the right length has to vary depending on the batter at the crease and that it what the Indian bowlers could not do and hopes that can be improved upon. 'But bowling the right length according to the batsmen which is very important which I think we lacked in the first game. Hopefully, we will come back stronger and adjust that. And I'm saying that if you look at his wagon wheel also, Ben Duckett plays square on the offside, square on the leg side, not so much in the weak," he said. 'But at the same time, Zach Crawley takes out the big front foot trying to cover that line and swing. So, adjusting the line and the length according to the batsmen and according to that particular pitch is very important which I think will be the key going ahead as well," Irfan added.
