Arabian Post Staff -Dubai du has initiated live deployment of 5G-Advanced technology on its network, becoming the first operator in the region—and marking the United Arab Emirates as the first country—to roll out this next-generation capability in cooperation with Huawei. This accomplishment underscores du's ambition to pioneer telecommunications innovation and strengthen the nation's digital infrastructure. The rollout centres on the Dual Band Active Antenna Unit, operating simultaneously in the 3.7 GHz and 2.6 GHz bands. Conceived by du and realised in collaboration with Huawei, this advanced solution merges hardware consolidation with enhanced spectrum efficiency, delivers superior network performance, and significantly trims energy consumption and carbon footprint. ADVERTISEMENT According to du's chief technology officer, the deployment represents 'a monumental leap forward' for both the operator and the telecom sector in the UAE. He stressed that the milestone reflects du's dedication to offering world-class connectivity and aligns with national objectives to position the country as a global technology leader—in parallel emphasising the importance of building sustainable, future-ready networks. From Huawei's perspective, Felix Liu, head of its Carrier Business for the UAE, noted that the company is honoured to support this frontier in 5G-Advanced infrastructure. He described the 5G Dual Band AAU as a flagship solution delivering outstanding network performance and user experience while resonating with the UAE's sustainability goals. This achievement builds on du's history in the region's 5G evolution. In 2024, du and Huawei introduced the Middle East's first indoor 5G-Advanced network using three-carrier aggregation alongside Huawei's LampSite X solution, achieving peak speeds of 5.1 Gb/s in spaces such as malls, hotels, airports, and residential buildings. Prior to that, the two companies had collaborated on a '5G-Advanced Country' initiative and unveiled a 5G-A-enabled demonstration villa featuring 10 Gbps Fixed Wireless Access and XR capabilities. Technical advances in this live deployment include more efficient use of spectrum and reduced dependence on extensive hardware—a strategic move given the growing demand for capacity and coverage. Dual-band AAUs are expected to support dense urban environments while reducing operational energy use. This development assumes added significance against the backdrop of the UAE's broader digital transformation objectives. The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority has championed advanced 5G trials, including initiatives to unlock 10 Gbps speeds with 6 GHz spectrum, in collaboration with service providers such as du. The industry now closely watches how the live 5G-Advanced network, powered by dual-band AAUs, will impact key user segments—whether in high-density urban zones, enterprise campuses, or immersive content scenarios. Oman's OQEP expects $1.6bln Marsa LNG bunkering project completion in 2028
OQ Exploration and Production (OQEP), an Oman-listed exploration and production company, expects completion of the $1.6 billion Marsa LNG project in 2028. 'Initial construction of the Marsa LNG plant commenced in the second quarter,' the company said in its financial results statement. The LNG bunkering facility, developed in partnership with France's TotalEnergies (80 percent stakeholder), will integrate natural gas production from Block 10 with a fully electric liquefaction plant and a solar power facility, making it one of the lowest GHG emission LNG plants in the world at 3kg CO2/boe. The project will serve the growing demand for LNG as a marine fuel, reducing shipping GHG emissions whilst strengthening Oman's position in the global energy sector. OQEP will also sell LNG directly to international markets through Marsa LNG. The company is also in discussions with British oil giant BP and its Block 61 partners to increase the gas volume by up to 2 trillion cubic feet gross for future projects, the statement added. AUB's School of Business Hosts Regional Workshop to Support Startups and Sustainable Innovation in the Natural Products Industry
The Suliman S. Olayan School of Business (OSB) at the American University of Beirut (AUB), through its Business Practice and Policy Initiative, hosted a two-day regional workshop titled 'Supporting Innovative and Regenerative Startups: Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Natural Products Industry.' Held in collaboration with the UNESCO Regional Office in Beirut; the Arab League Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization (ALECSO); and the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO, the workshop brought together youth-led startups, entrepreneurs, and experts from across the Arab region to exchange knowledge, promote sustainable business models, and advance innovation in the natural products sector. The workshop focused on showcasing innovative ideas within the regional startup ecosystem, encouraging sustainability practices in business, and aligning projects with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly 'Quality Education' and 'Responsible Consumption and Production.' It also aimed to strengthen participants' ability to scale their ventures while promoting green education, and fostering meaningful connections between entrepreneurs, industry, funding bodies, and policymakers. The workshop further examined potential policy reforms to enhance the productivity and growth of small enterprises in Lebanon and the region. The opening session featured remarks by Raghda Kawass, knowledge and public policy specialist at the Business Practice and Policy Initiative at OSB, who stressed the importance of youth investment and evidence-based policymaking. Professor Yusuf Sidani, OSB dean, highlighted the school's role in developing entrepreneurs who value long-term purpose over short-term profit. Ramza Jaber Saad, director general of the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO, called for urgent support for youth entrepreneurship, emphasizing the value of partnerships and inclusive growth. Dr. Mohamed Sanad Abu Darwish, director of science and scientific research at ALECSO, addressed the role of startups in balancing economic and environmental goals, while Dr. Maysoun Chehab, senior education program specialist at UNESCO, and Assem Abi Ali, national education programme coordinator at UNESCO emphasized the power of education and innovation in shaping future green entrepreneurs. Participants included regional experts from Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Jordan, and Tunisia, as well as twelve Lebanese entrepreneurs in the natural products sector. They engaged in interactive sessions led by faculty members from across the university as well as the Suliman S. Olayan School of Business. Dr. Bijan Azad, director of the Darwazah Center for Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship at AUB, shared insights on startup growth, while Dr. Nada Khaddaj-Sobh, director of the Center for Women in Business at AUB, provided training on pitching and public communication. Dr. Marwan Wahbi, senior lecturer at AUB, addressed digital marketing strategies, and AUB's Environment and Sustainability Unit led sessions on clean production and green marketing. The workshop also featured contributions from key regional stakeholders and incubators. The Talal and Madiha Zein AUB-Innovation Park (AUB iPark) discussed startup financing tools. Guest speakers—including entrepreneurs, investors, and other stakeholders such as Tunisia's Zubair Yahya, Jordan's Nidal Bitar, Lebanon's Suleiman Barda, and Kuwait's Dr. Ihab Khalid Maqableh—explored funding models, market access, and innovation empowerment. This two-day event marked a significant step toward building a more resilient and innovative entrepreneurship ecosystem in Lebanon and the Arab region. By uniting academia, startups, and policy actors, the workshop helped lay the foundation for sustained collaboration and youth-led solutions to regional development challenges.
