Lawas to host inaugural International Dragon Boat and Cultural Festival this May 22–25
MIRI (May 15): Lawas town will host its inaugural International Dragon Boat and Cultural Festival from May 22 to 25, an event anticipated to attract large crowds of both locals and tourists.
Organising chairman Liaw Cheng Heng announced that the festival will be a multifaceted cultural celebration featuring dragon boat races, traditional folk dance performances by 25 ethnic groups, and a vibrant food fair.
The highlight of the four-day programme will be the exciting dragon boat competition featuring 28 teams from Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei and the Federal Territory of Labuan, said Liaw.
'This festival brings together cultural expression, sport, and food festivals in one major event,' he said in the statement.
Organised by the Lawas Chinese Cultural Welfare and Expedition Association, the event will also include stage performances by both local and foreign artistes, as well as exhibitions and sales of local food, handicrafts, and daily essentials by small-scale entrepreneurs and hawkers.
Liaw emphasised that the festival aims to promote tourism and the preservation of cultural heritage, while also fostering unity and cooperation through traditional sporting events such as dragon boat racing.
'The event will significantly benefit the local economy by creating platforms for entrepreneurs to showcase and sell their products and services from across the region and beyond,' he added.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan is expected to officiate the festival's opening ceremony.
The event is also supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts, as well as various government agencies and local authorities in Lawas. Cultural Festival International Dragon Boat Lawas lead

The Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts said he was still in the dark about the initiative, which was introduced by the federal government. 'I'm still trying to learn and understand where these tourism zones are, as far as Sarawak is concerned. For me, there are already many areas we've been promoting as our tourism products, and from the state's perspective, we don't have such zonings. 'That's why I need to learn more. Perhaps under the federal Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac), they might have created imaginary zoning areas where more tourism promotion is to be carried out. We'll see how we can be part of that,' he told reporters. Should the federal government proceed with the tourism investment zones, he said the state would need to review the proposal and be officially briefed on it. 'As it is, we're still doing what we've been doing; we can see the number of tourists coming in and its very good as we're targeting 5 million visitors this year, and every month our tourism receipts exceed RM1 billion. So this is a successful effort done by the state. 'Probably the tourism zones that they mentioned already fall within the areas that we are also doing a lot of marketing such as Mulu, Niah, and apart from that the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF), Kuching Delta Geopark. 'If that's what they mean, then perhaps we're already on the same page. It's just that we haven't been briefed yet,' he added. On July 31, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the special tourism investment zones tabled in the RMK-13. Saying that this will be developed in Sarawak, Johor, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan, he said this would involve collaboration between Putrajaya, state governments, the private sector and cooperatives. 'These zones will serve as catalysts for the creation of new tourism products, including those based on artistic, cultural and heritage assets, as well as natural attractions,' he added.

Bajausama Cultural Festival Aims 10,000 Visitors
GENERAL KOTA KINABALU, July 31 (Bernama) -- The Festival Kebudayaan Rumpun Bajausama Sabah 2025, to be held from Aug 7 to 10 in Tuaran, is targeting 10,000 visitors. Vice-president of the Association of Rumpun Bajausama Sabah, Datuk Japlin Akim, said the festival aims to be a platform for heritage empowerment, as well as strengthening unity between races and ethnicities in the state. 'This festival will highlight the rich, unique and interesting culture, customs and traditions of the Bajausama community. 'It is also in line with efforts to promote local culture internationally,' he said in a statement here today. The festival will be officially opened by the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah, Tun Musa Haji Aman, at the Rumpun Bajausama Cultural Centre, Kampung Lok Batik, Tuaran, with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, who is the association president, also expected to be present. Japlin said the festival is also supported by various government agencies to ensure comprehensive participation from the community regardless of race, ethnicity, religion and political affiliation. Various programmes and activities would be held throughout the festival, including exhibitions and sales of handicraft products, the Ratu Serimpak competition, the Betitik competition and a digital food photography competition. He said the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) through the National Heritage Department in collaboration with the state government would also organise the Cita Rasa Warisan@Sabah Festival in conjunction with the festival. 'Among the main attractions are traditional cooking demonstrations by famous national chefs,' he said.

LUSAKA, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's tourism sector aims to attract about 3 million international tourists in 2025, driven by ongoing investments and recent growth, an industry official said on Wednesday. During a meeting between tourism stakeholders and President Hakainde Hichilema, Mark O'Donnell, chairperson of Union Gold Group, a Zambian enterprise involved in sectors such as hospitality, retail, and construction, highlighted the positive trajectory of tourism. In 2024, Zambia experienced a sharp increase in international tourist arrivals, rising from 1.3 million in 2023 to 2.2 million, according to the Ministry of Tourism. O'Donnell emphasized that the tourism industry holds "significant" potential to become a major contributor to Zambia's gross domestic product (GDP), provided that existing bottlenecks are addressed. He also called for policy changes to further stimulate growth in the tourism sector. For his part, Hichilema acknowledged the sector's progress and underscored the government's commitment to its continued development. "We may start by tackling issues that are standing in the way so that we open up the sector for more growth," he added.
