Lawas to host inaugural International Dragon Boat and Cultural Festival this May 22–25

MIRI (May 15): Lawas town will host its inaugural International Dragon Boat and Cultural Festival from May 22 to 25, an event anticipated to attract large crowds of both locals and tourists.
Organising chairman Liaw Cheng Heng announced that the festival will be a multifaceted cultural celebration featuring dragon boat races, traditional folk dance performances by 25 ethnic groups, and a vibrant food fair.
The highlight of the four-day programme will be the exciting dragon boat competition featuring 28 teams from Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei and the Federal Territory of Labuan, said Liaw.
'This festival brings together cultural expression, sport, and food festivals in one major event,' he said in the statement.
Organised by the Lawas Chinese Cultural Welfare and Expedition Association, the event will also include stage performances by both local and foreign artistes, as well as exhibitions and sales of local food, handicrafts, and daily essentials by small-scale entrepreneurs and hawkers.
Liaw emphasised that the festival aims to promote tourism and the preservation of cultural heritage, while also fostering unity and cooperation through traditional sporting events such as dragon boat racing.
'The event will significantly benefit the local economy by creating platforms for entrepreneurs to showcase and sell their products and services from across the region and beyond,' he added.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan is expected to officiate the festival's opening ceremony.
The event is also supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts, as well as various government agencies and local authorities in Lawas. Cultural Festival International Dragon Boat Lawas lead

Sarawak plans aerotropolis with new Kuching International Airport to boost aerospace hub aspirations
Photo of the current Kuching International Airport. – Photo by Chimon Upon KUCHING (May 28): Sarawak is moving forward with plans to develop an aerotropolis anchored by the proposed new Kuching International Airport, as part of the state's broader vision to establish itself as a regional aerospace hub, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He said the new airport will be a central component of the proposed aerotropolis and will be designed with modern and green architectural principles. 'We also discussed the development of an aerotropolis in Sarawak, which will include the new Kuching International Airport. 'The new airport will embody modern, green architectural principles and be equipped with cutting-edge systems to ensure a seamless passenger journey, from check-in to boarding,' he said during his winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly sitting here today. The new airport is expected to accommodate more than 15 million passengers annually and will feature an integrated terminal layout to optimise efficiency and collaboration across the aviation industry. 'This facility will serve as an integrated aviation hub, where all terminals and support buildings are seamlessly interconnected. This cohesive layout will enhance operational efficiency and foster stronger synergies across the entire aviation industry ecosystem,' he added. Abang Johari said the state government will establish a Sarawak-Airbus Joint Task Force to draw up a roadmap for the development of Sarawak's aerospace industry. He disclosed that during a recent working visit to Toulouse, France, he met with Airbus officials and visited the company's headquarters along with ATR as part of the preparation to position Sarawak as an aerospace hub. 'Airbus expressed strong support for Sarawak's ambitions, as they proposed the Airbus-Sarawak Kenyalang Strategic Partnership Avenues, covering six key areas,' he said. These include pathways towards Sustainable Aviation Fuel production, human capital development, industrial ecosystem development, the Digital Airline Journey, an Airbus consulting project for AirBorneo, and airspace operations. In addition, Abang Johari said infrastructure planning in Sarawak will also benefit from international benchmarking, citing a visit to Abu Dhabi where he observed the integration of sea and air ports. 'By learning from global models like Abu Dhabi, whose ports connect seamlessly with international locations across the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and Asia, we can better design Sarawak's global linkages and domestic connectivity,' he said. He also announced that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Abu Dhabi Ports Group and Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad was signed during the visit to foster long-term cooperation in port infrastructure and maritime logistics development. Abang Johari gave assurance that the development of the new international airport and deep seaport in Kuching would involve private sector investments. 'There has been expression of interest by the private sector, local multi-national and international corporations to spearhead the projects,' he said. Abdul Karim: Sarawak to develop untapped lake tourism potentials

KUCHING (May 27): The Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts will be collaborating with relevant ministries and agencies in planning and developing lake tourism potentials, guided by the Sarawak Hydro Lakes Management and Development Plan 2030. Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said Sarawak's natural and man-made lakes present a significant and largely untapped potential for lake tourism. 'These aquatic environments offer unique opportunities to diversify our tourism offerings. 'To fully realise the potential of lake tourism in Sarawak, it is crucial for us to ensure local community participation, creating a variety of appealing activities, targeted marketing and improving accessibility through investments in road and boat transportation,' he said when winding up his ministerial speech at the State Legislative Assembly sitting today. He told the august House that Sarawak, with its strategic location bordering Indonesia's Kalimantan and Brunei Darussalam, also possessed significant potential for border tourism, offering unique opportunities and benefits. 'A majority of Bruneians and Indonesians enter Sarawak by land. In 2024, the Customs, Immigration, Quarantine and Security (CIQS) Complex in Sungai Tujuh recorded 697,666 Bruneian visitors, followed by Pandaruan (290,111), Mengkalap (306,130) and Tedungan (311,619). 'Meanwhile, CIQS Tebedu recorded 280,884 Indonesian visitors, followed by Biawak (137,454) and Lubok Antu (50,124),' he said. He said the relocation of Indonesia's capital to Nusantara in East Kalimantan presents a significant opportunity for Sarawak to position itself as a beneficiary of the increased regional activity. Abdul Karim also touched on the state's health tourism sector which has experienced significant growth last year, according to the Malaysia Health Tourism Council (MHTC). 'In 2024, Sarawak's health tourism sector attracted 68,655 health visitors, a 6.6 per cent increase from the 64,393 recorded in 2023. 'This surge in visitors translated to a substantial 13.65 per cent rise in revenue, reaching RM141.5 million in 2024 compared to RM124.5 million in the previous year.' He pointed out that Indonesia and China were the primary drivers of Sarawak's health tourism revenue last year, with Indonesian visitors accounting for 52,850 arrivals and revenue of RM127 million, while Chinese visitors contributing to 3,565 arrivals and revenue of RM3.6 million. Brunei health visitors accounted for 3,239 arrivals with revenue of RM2.5 million; the Philippines with 1,061 arrivals and revenue of RM1.04 million; and India with 808 arrivals and revenue of RM0.6 million, he added. Moving forward, Abdul Karim said the Sarawak Tourism Board is strengthening health tourism promotion through close collaboration with MHTC and participation in the Malaysia Healthcare Expo.
