Kuwait launches 10th national blood donation campaign to honor martyrs, promote unity
In a statement at the launch, Dr. Al-Awadhi described the campaign as a message of loyalty and gratitude to those who gave their lives for the nation. He emphasized that donating blood is both a humanitarian duty and a symbol of national solidarity, encouraging citizens and residents to donate at the Central Blood Bank in Jabriya and other Ministry of Health facilities across the country.
'Donating a drop of blood saves a life,' the minister said, revealing that over 100 blood bags were collected within the first two hours of the campaign—an unprecedented turnout. He also expressed appreciation for the early participation of military personnel, underlining the significance of their involvement.
Dr. Al-Awadhi noted that the ministry currently holds a stock of around 32,000 units of blood and platelets, with the goal of expanding reserves through regular national campaigns.
The Ministry of Interior reiterated its support through the participation of its staff across all sectors. Colonel Yousef Mirshed, Assistant Director General for Security Relations and Media, said the campaign reflects the ministry's commitment to both security and humanitarian roles. 'This initiative comes in remembrance of our martyrs and highlights our responsibility to serve society beyond the security field,' he said.
Colonel Mirshed added that the ministry's contribution reinforces the culture of voluntary blood donation, which is essential for saving lives and upholding noble humanitarian values.
Director of Blood Transfusion Services, Dr. Reem Al-Roudhan, said the campaign—now in its 10th year—aims to foster a culture of voluntary blood donation while supporting the country's strategic blood reserves. She praised the consistent involvement of the Ministries of Defense, Interior, and National Guard, as well as civil society and private sector institutions.
Dr. Al-Roudhan emphasized that the campaign is part of broader year-round efforts to raise public awareness, promote community partnership, and highlight the life-saving importance of blood donation. She recalled that the ninth edition of the campaign collected 500 blood bags in one day and expects similar outcomes this year. Last year alone, approximately 95,000 units of blood were collected, showing an annual increase of 4 percent.
The campaign will continue until August 2 and serves as a national call for altruism, unity, and support for Kuwait's healthcare system.

Another complex operation involved excising liver tumors from a one-year and eight-month-old child, performed in cooperation with surgeons from the Liver Surgery Unit at Al-Amiri Hospital. Dr. Ismail Taqi, Head of Pediatric Surgery at Ibn Sina Hospital, told Al Jarida, 'Our surgical outcomes are comparable to the best global centers and strictly follow internationally recognized protocols.' He added, 'Thanks to the dedication of our team, we have drastically reduced the number of patients needing treatment abroad, reflecting the success of these highly delicate surgeries and the full recovery of our patients.' Dr. Taqi explained that managing pediatric tumors requires careful consideration of several factors including the patient's age, possible genetic syndromes, tumor location, and rate of growth. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment according to international guidelines remain essential to improving outcomes. Unlike adult cancers, pediatric tumors differ significantly in diagnosis, treatment approaches, and recovery rates, which tend to be higher in children. Upon suspicion of a tumor, pediatricians consult a specialized multidisciplinary team comprising oncologists from the National Bank of Kuwait Hospital, histology experts at Al-Sabah Hospital, and pediatric radiologists and surgeons at Ibn Sina Hospital. A meeting of all involved departments follows to implement protocols and ensure the patient's family is fully supported and informed throughout the treatment journey. Dr. Taqi highlighted that in recent years, Kuwait has achieved remarkable outcomes in pediatric cancer care, with superior diagnostic and treatment services that have positively impacted the reliance on overseas medical referrals. 'We are committed to advancing pediatric medicine following the Ministry of Health's strategic plans, continuously upgrading our capabilities to keep pace with the latest global developments,' he said. One of the most sensitive cases involved a newborn diagnosed with a kidney tumor just one week after birth, despite prenatal ultrasounds indicating healthy kidneys. The rapid tumor growth in the final weeks of pregnancy posed unexpected challenges. After thorough assessments of the infant's overall condition and renal function, as well as genetic testing to rule out hereditary cancer syndromes, the medical team devised a treatment plan. 'The emotional toll on the family was immense, balancing joy with fear and uncertainty,' Dr. Taqi recounted. 'However, continuous communication and trust-building between the medical team and the family fostered hope.' The surgery was fully successful, and the baby recovered without the need for chemotherapy, requiring only follow-up care at the Pediatric Oncology Unit of the National Bank Hospital. Dr. Taqi emphasized the critical role of involving families as active members of the care team, noting that children often cannot articulate their symptoms or feelings. Families, together with dedicated nursing staff, who provide round-the-clock observation during hospitalization, are best positioned to monitor and report changes in the child's condition. 'The nursing staff's dedication and professionalism are vital, and they work closely with families to ensure continuity of care after discharge,' he added. PAAET limits 2025 admission to Kuwaitis, adds new program
KUWAIT: Prospective students and their families receive guidance at the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training booth at The Avenues Mall. — KUNA KUWAIT: The Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET) has kicked off this year's 'My Right Start' campaign with a dedicated booth at The Avenues Mall, offering in-person guidance for high school graduates applying to the institute for the 2025/2026 academic year. The booth will be open daily from 10 am to 10 pm until August 7 and aims to answer questions about admissions and post-graduation job placement, in coordination with various government entities. 'This is an annual guidance campaign targeting recent high school graduates interested in joining PAAET's colleges and institutes,' said Dr Hassan Al-Fajjam, Director General of the Authority. He added, 'For this academic year, applications are open for five colleges and five institutes offering nearly 60 specializations aligned with labor market needs.' But this year's campaign comes with a number of changes. According to Dr. Fawzi Al-Doukhi, Dean of Admissions and Registration, admission for the 2025/2026 academic year is limited to Kuwaiti nationals only. Applications will be accepted from August 5 to August 18. Al-Doukhi announced a major addition to the academic offerings: a new four-year Bachelor's degree in Fire Engineering Technology in collaboration with the General Fire Force. 'Graduates will be appointed directly as engineering officers in the force,' he said. The admission process has also been updated with stricter requirements and new procedures. 'All admitted students must confirm their acceptance online. Failure to do so within the deadline will result in cancellation,' Al-Doukhi explained. A retraction after confirmation will also incur a KD 20 fee. In another key change, applicants to medical programs—including nursing and health sciences—must now submit a certificate proving they are free of specific infectious diseases. 'Students accepted into these specializations must collect a health clearance form from PAAET's main building in Adailiya, have it stamped, and then undergo testing at the Ministry of Health. The approved certificate must be submitted during interviews at the respective colleges,' Al-Doukhi said. Commemorating the 35th anniversary of the Iraqi brutal invasion, August 2, 1990, Al-Awadhi said it is a landmark day as Kuwaiti nationals inside the country and beyond kept united behind their legitimate leader in a way that mirrored an eternal humanitarian and national scene. At the heart of that battle, medical teams were up to responsibilities, despite the shortage of resources and tough conditions, he affirmed, noting that they provided care to those wounded. "We are proud of our medical teams and all that contributed to providing services during the most challenging conditions," he said. These offerings will remain engraved into the country's history and a source of inspiration of generations, he stated.
