Driussi scores for River Plate but leaves with injury in 3-1 Club World Cup win over Urawa
SEATTLE (AP) — Sebastian Driussi scored for River Plate but was injured in the process, Marcos Acuña recorded two assists and the Argentine club beat the Urawa Red Diamonds 3-1 in the Club World Cup at Lumen Field on Tuesday.
Driussi's goal three minutes into the second half made it 2-0, but he collided with goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa and fell to the ground in pain, grabbing his ankle. He limped off the field with assistance and was replaced by Miguel Borja.
Facundo Colidio and Maximiliano Meza also scored for River Plate.
Yusuke Matsuo converted a penalty for the Japanese club in the 58th minute. Takuro Kaneko drew the foul and yellow card on Acuña. The kick was delayed by pushing and shoving at the penalty box's edge, resulting in a yellow for German Pezzella.
Colidio scored in the 12th minute on a header off a cross from Acuña, and Meza restored River Plate's two-goal advantage in the 73rd minute off Acuña's corner kick service.

(Varsity Spirit via AP) Varsity Spirit is starting a professional cheerleading league that promises to pay athletes, joining the crowded niche sports market that already includes softball, volleyball, 3-on-3 basketball, lacrosse, indoor football and more clamoring for both fans' attention and their dollars. Pro Cheer League is billed as the first professional cheerleading league for athletes 18 and older designed to give cheerleaders the chance to keep competing after college. Advertisement Bill Seely, president of Varsity Spirit based in Memphis, Tennessee, sees plenty of opportunity for all these sports to succeed. This cheer league's advantage comes from the sport's growth since the 1970s along with Varsity's own fan base through its cheerleading, dance team camps, events and shows. 'That's going to help us really kind of build this out in a way that is sustainable and will continue to grow not just domestically but globally," Seely said. Varsity Spirit has had more than 80,000 people attend its events. The Pro Cheer League will try to tap into that fan base by competing the same night of other events starting in January in Indianapolis when competition begins. The league will feature four teams stocked with 30 male and female athletes based in Atlanta, Dallas, Miami and San Diego. Teams will be selected from tryouts starting in September led by gym owners. Practice begins in November. Advertisement After Indianapolis, five more events are planned in Houston, Atlanta, Anaheim and capped by the championship in Nashville at the end of March or start of April. Each match will feature three periods of competition with two focusing on cheerleading skills, stunts, basket tosses and tumbling in bracket-style rounds. The final period will feature choreography and music. 'We hope a media deal, which we're working on right now, will help kind of bridge beyond the existing fan base," Seely said. 'And we're trying to build something that entertains families, friends and gives everyone just a great show that they want to come out to." Best for the cheerleaders will be money for their athleticism. Compensation will include pay, money for travel, lodging and uniforms along with bonuses and prizes. Advertisement Seely noted stunt is on track for NCAA championship status for women by spring 2027 after being designated an emerging sport in 2023. The International Olympic Committee recognized cheerleading as a sport in 2021. They've already had interest from would-be competitors from across the U.S. with some from Canada and even a couple from Europe. Rockets officially announce contract extension with Steven Adams
Last Saturday, it was reported that veteran center Steven Adams would re-sign with the Houston Rockets on a three-year deal worth $39 million. On Wednesday, the Rockets officially confirmed that news. As his existing team, Adams was able to negotiate with Houston prior to the NBA's 2025 free agency window, which starts at the end of June. Advertisement The press release reads: The Rockets announced that they have signed center Steven Adams to a contract extension. He was originally acquired via trade with Memphis on Feb. 1, 2024, but made his debut with the Rockets this past season. In 58 games with three starts with Houston in 2024-25, Adams averaged 3.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 13.7 minutes per game. From the start of December, he ranked second on the team in plus/minus rating (+189). Last season, Adams ranked second in the NBA in rebounds per 36 minutes played (14.8 per) of players with at least 15 games played. He also averaged 7.5 offensive boards per 36 minutes played, which is the highest in a season by any player in NBA history with 40-plus games played. Dating back to 1996-97, the Rockets were the third team to have a total rebounding differential of 500 or better in a season. Adams also played for the other two teams (Oklahoma City in 2015-16 and Memphis in 2021-22). The deal is fully guaranteed and does not include any player or team options, per Kelly Iko of The Athletic. According to Keith Smith of Spotrac, the contract is frontloaded and descends in annual value, which could be useful in future years as more members of Houston's young core land contract extensions with significant raises. Adams' deal will be worth $14.1 million in the 2025-26 season, $13.0 million in 2026-27, and $11.9 million in 2027-28, Smith reports.
