I'm New to Camping. But This Outdoor Gear Makes Me Feel Like an Expert.

In this edition of The Recommendation, our tech editor and self-proclaimed novice camper dishes on the outdoor gear that made the biggest difference for her. Plus: a great raincoat, the best hiking boots, and some excellent binoculars.
I have never been what anyone would call outdoorsy. I didn't grow up biking or fishing with relatives, as many of my friends did. My stint as a Girl Scout was short-lived. And while I took up hiking during the pandemic, the only outdoor 'gear' I owned was a pair of running shoes.
Forget camping. Friends and family used to joke about how miserable I would be sleeping outside without creature comforts like steaming hot showers and soft mattresses. But then I started dating my now-partner, a former park ranger who's happiest in the woods. I quickly realized I would have to accept the outdoors into my life eventually, and when he gently suggested that we give camping a try, I said yes (with some trepidation).
A one-night trial run in a nearby state park revealed that our bare-bones setup needed a few upgrades to make us (read: me) a little more comfortable. One upgrade, in particular, was the biggest game changer for me: a deluxe sleeping pad, which came highly recommended by Wirecutter outdoor editor Ria Misra.
It was a splurge, to be sure, but one that has made sleeping outside an almost-luxurious experience for me. We just returned from an early May weekend in Yosemite National Park, where we slept comfortably beneath towering pines and hiked along awe-inspiring granite cliffs. The sound of thundering waterfalls could be heard throughout the valley, and the sun peeked out occasionally between soft, late spring showers.
We have a lot more gear now than when we started dating (this camping tent, for one, was an instant improvement over my partner's teensy backpacking tent. It's ridiculously easy to set up and more than spacious enough for two). And I have been struck by how easy it was to gain a little bit of outdoorsy confidence with one or two well-vetted upgrades.
My advice? Pick one thing you're nervous about, then find a solution. I was anxious about sudden storms, so I bought a hardy-yet-stylish raincoat — which I now reach for even when I'm not hiking. I also hate sleeping on freezing cold ground, so I splurged on that cozy sleeping pad (which my veteran camping partner begrudgingly admits is awesome). And don't forget the little conveniences, too: This cleverly designed pour-over coffee setup has been a game changer — for both expert and newbie alike.

Arlington Work Camp celebrates 30 years of helping homeowners and building community

A volunteer effort to help some Arlington homeowners reached a milestone this week. Arlington Work Camp is celebrating its 30th year. More than a dozen Churches of Christ are located across Texas, and over 100 teen volunteers are participating. The teens pay their way to come help homeowners rehab houses. They paint homes, clear debris and do other tasks to clean up the property. But this is about more than just simply working on a house. "We're here because we love our community," said Landon Goff, one of the volunteers. "I know it's hard, but what I'm doing is for someone else, and it's a good thing," another volunteer, Wendy Richards, said. In the 30 years of Arlington Work Camp, organizers estimate they've helped well over 300 Arlington homeowners.

Gibson is searching for an iconic movie guitar

Lost to the Future - The Search for Marty McFly's Back to the Future Guitar Gibson is on the hunt for one very special guitar: The cherry red Gibson ES-345 used by Marty McFly to play Chuck Berry's Johnny B Goode in the 1985 hit movie Back to the Future. Remember it? Course you do. To mark the movie's 40th anniversary, the legendary guitar maker has decided it wants to track down the whereabouts of the iconic instrument, and it's even called on those connected to the movie to help it in its quest. In a star-filled video (top) released on Tuesday, Back to the Future lead Michael J. Fox says: 'We need your help. We're trying to find the guitar I played in Back of the Future. It's somewhere lost in the space-time continuum … or it's in some Teamster's garage.' The actor adds: ' If you know where it is, if you know who has it, call us, text us.' Christopher Lloyd, who played the mad scientist Dr. Emmett Brown in the movie, also chimes in, saying: 'Somehow, it's vanished … This guitar has been lost to the future.' Ah, lost to the future, that's catchy. Well, it turns out that the search for the Gibson ES-345 will form the basis of a documentary called just that: Lost to the Future. The project appears designed to engage fans of both the movie and the guitar, while also documenting the guitar's impact and its mysterious disappearance. On the YouTube page featuring Fox et al, Gibson elaborates: 'When it comes to guitars in movies, no guitar was more iconic or more influential than the cherry red Gibson ES-345 used by Marty McFly to play Johnny B Goode in the movie Back to the Future. That scene has been cited by countless artists as the moment they knew they wanted to play guitar.' It adds: 'One problem: the guitar has been missing since 1985, and no one knows its whereabouts.' The documentary team will apparently 'search the globe' for what Gibson insists is 'the most important guitar in cinema history.' Guess Spinal Tap's 'never played' guitar doesn't quite cut it. So, Back to the Future's Gibson ES-345. Do you know where it is?
