Honoring Georgia's fallen: A traveling memorial wall pays tribute to 876 officers

Every time an officer dies in the line of duty, it hurts John Ivey's soul. He's worked in law enforcement for 30 years. He built a granite wall to honor their lives. "It's in honor of every fallen officer in the state of Georgia we lost since Dec. 11, 1839. There are 876 fallen heroes that are on our granite memorial," said Ivey.
The wall is made up of granite panels with the names and images of the officers. "I hand etched everything on there," said Ivey.
He says putting a name on the wall is always hard, but it's even harder when it's someone he knows. "You know their names, you know their story. It's emotional. I was there with quite a few of them," said Ivey.
Ivey takes the wall to various events across the state so as many people as possible can honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Local perspective
Theresa Hand visited the wall when it was displayed in Cobb County.
"All the people on this wall are heroes," said Hand.
Hand got emotional when she saw the image of Atlanta Police Officer Sherry Lyons Williams, who was killed in 2001 during a drug raid.
"She and I served in the military together. She was a dedicated officer," said Hand.
Ivey says when he sees the reactions from families and friends, he knows the work he's put into the memorial wall is worth it.
"They give you a hug and say thank you, because they're never going to be forgotten, and that's our goal," said Ivey.

The vehicle was trying to pull away when deputies arrived at the scene. A number of units, including the bomb unit, were seen on Deering Parkway Road between Interstate 95 and U.S. 1. Ivey said the vehicle's driver told a story that "did not match what was going on," causing investigators to search the vehicle and discover an explosive device that the sheriff said was a possible pipe bomb. Ivey said the driver of the vehicle appeared to be angry over employment issues and planned to target one of the state radio towers. "The individual has made some statements about getting fired and things of that nature," Ivey said. Ivey said the incident was isolated and not an act of terrorism. He said the suspect is now in custody. What we don't know It is currently unclear what employment issues led up to the suspect attempting to target the radio tower with the explosive device. Officials have not yet released the identity of the suspect taken into custody. FOX 35 has reached out to investigators for more information on the incident. INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Independence Police Chief Adam Dustman is speaking out Thursday, June 5, to give his side of the story amid swirling rumors about his recent leave from the department. In a revealing interview with FOX4, Dustman categorically denied allegations tied to an incident during National Police Week and emphasized his commitment to the job he loves. Bomb Squad removes grenade from Independence cemetery Since May 23, Chief Dustman has been off the job, stepping away to address 'personal issues.' 'I have personal issues going on. I've decided to take time. I've gone through a rough couple of years with the department and the loss we've had,' he said when asked about the reasons for his leave. 'With the addition of personal issues, now is the time to take some time away to focus on being the best me I can be and the best dad I can be for my boys.' FOX4 confirmed through public records and the chief himself that his wife, Sarah Dustman, filed for divorce at the end of March. However, personal challenges aren't the heart of the controversy. The controversy centers on an event during National Police Week in Washington, D.C., which began on Sunday, May 11. Chief Dustman represented the Independence Police Department as the name of fallen officer Cody Allen was added to the National Fallen Officer Memorial. It was following that solemn event that rumors began to circulate. Some claim the chief went out with colleagues, got so intoxicated he had to be carried to his hotel, and was even kicked out of a bar or involved in a fight. Dustman, however, vehemently denies these claims. Dustman says he has full confidence in Petersen and the team to keep things running smoothly. 'I am 100% up for the job. I love this job, it's literally, outside of my kiddos, the single greatest accomplishment of my life,' Dustman responded when asked if he's still up for the job. 'I'm proud to serve this city and the men and women of this police department each and every day. That will never change.' He also expressed concern about someone leaking highly personal information within the department, but said he does not know who is responsible. Parents charged with manslaughter after their 7-year-old son fatally struck by car in North Carolina
The parents of a 7-year-old boy who was fatally struck by a car while trying to cross a street in North Carolina have been charged with manslaughter and remain in jail on $1.5 million bond, police said. The child was hit by a Jeep Cherokee on May 27 in Gastonia, located west of Charlotte, police said. He was attempting to cross the street outside of a crosswalk with a 10-year-old boy when the crash occurred, according to the Gastonia Police Department. He suffered life-threatening injuries and died at a hospital. His parents -- Jessica Ivey, 30, and Samuele Jenkins, 31 -- were charged two days after the deadly collision with felony involuntary manslaughter, felony child neglect and misdemeanor child neglect, police said. The parents said the older child was the boy's brother, ABC Charlotte affiliate WSOC reported. The Gastonia Police Department said in a press release that its investigation "revealed that the children involved were unsupervised at the time the boy stepped into traffic." "In such cases, adults must be held accountable for their responsibilities to ensure a safe environment for their children," the department added. A judge set the parents' bond at $1.5 million during a court appearance on Friday. They remain in custody in the Gaston County Jail, online jail records show. They have not yet entered a plea to the charges. ABC News has reached out to Ivey's public defender for comment and did not immediately receive a response. Jenkins' attorney said he was appointed to the case on Wednesday and had not received any documents yet. The 76-year-old female driver of the Jeep has not been charged, police said. "At this time, there is no evidence of speeding or wrongdoing on the part of the driver, therefore no charges have been filed," the Gastonia Police Department said. "The driver continues to be cooperative and the incident remains under active investigation by the Gastonia Police Department's Traffic Division." Police did not release the name of the boy who was fatally struck, though his parents said his first name was Legend in an interview with WSOC prior to their arrest. Ivey told the station that her two sons were walking the two blocks home from a shopping center for the first time on their own when the accident occurred, WSOC reported. "It was just devastating. I'm still in shock," she told WSOC. "It's hard. I haven't stopped crying. My husband hasn't stopped crying," she told the station. Ivey added that she wanted "justice for my baby" against the driver, whose name has not been publicly released. "I just don't feel like she should still be able to drive," Ivey told WSOC. Jenkins told WSOC he was on the phone with his sons when the crash occurred. "I heard my oldest son, he was like, 'Oh my God, Legend, no, no,'" he told the station. "So I hung up and ... I ran to find them." The parents are next scheduled to appear in court on June 20.
