Independence police chief on leave, fires back at ‘baseless rumors' in FOX4 interview
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Independence Police Chief Adam Dustman is speaking out Thursday, June 5, to give his side of the story amid swirling rumors about his recent leave from the department.
In a revealing interview with FOX4, Dustman categorically denied allegations tied to an incident during National Police Week and emphasized his commitment to the job he loves.

Since May 23, Chief Dustman has been off the job, stepping away to address 'personal issues.'
'I have personal issues going on. I've decided to take time. I've gone through a rough couple of years with the department and the loss we've had,' he said when asked about the reasons for his leave.
'With the addition of personal issues, now is the time to take some time away to focus on being the best me I can be and the best dad I can be for my boys.'
FOX4 confirmed through public records and the chief himself that his wife, Sarah Dustman, filed for divorce at the end of March. However, personal challenges aren't the heart of the controversy.
The controversy centers on an event during National Police Week in Washington, D.C., which began on Sunday, May 11.
Chief Dustman represented the Independence Police Department as the name of fallen officer Cody Allen was added to the National Fallen Officer Memorial. It was following that solemn event that rumors began to circulate.
Some claim the chief went out with colleagues, got so intoxicated he had to be carried to his hotel, and was even kicked out of a bar or involved in a fight. Dustman, however, vehemently denies these claims.

The only truth he says is that he went out after hours with fellow officers.
Despite his denials, a high-level source confirmed to FOX4 that the incident has prompted, or will prompt, an internal affairs investigation.
Chief Dustman says he welcomes the probe and insists his leave of absence has nothing to do with it.
In the meantime, Deputy Chief Jason Petersen is leading the department. Dustman says he has full confidence in Petersen and the team to keep things running smoothly.
'I am 100% up for the job. I love this job, it's literally, outside of my kiddos, the single greatest accomplishment of my life,' Dustman responded when asked if he's still up for the job.
'I'm proud to serve this city and the men and women of this police department each and every day. That will never change.'
He also expressed concern about someone leaking highly personal information within the department, but said he does not know who is responsible.

Chief Dustman says he is focusing on his sons during this time away and expects to return to headquarters in early July.
FOX4 has reached out to the city and the department for comment and is awaiting their response.

Good Samaritan steps up to help Grandview carpenter after trailer, tools stolen
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Some good news, a good Samaritan who saw our story about a carpenter who said his trailer and equipment were stolen in Grandview, is stepping up to help. . Kyle Hudson now has a set of tools and lots of equipment thanks to a generous donation. 'Once it leaves here it's yours,' the good Samaritan said. 'I hope it helps.' The man who donated more than a dozen pieces of equipment wanted to remain anonymous, but felt pulled to help. He heard Hudson's story. Hudson said in May, a thief took off with his trailer, along with all his Milwaukee tools and work equipment inside. It was parked outside his home in Grandview and wasn't insured. He said about $10,000-worth of items — gone. 'The material and the equipment got stolen in the trailer,' Hudson said. A generous viewer saw our FOX4 story and reached out to help Hudson, a total stranger. We were there for the hand off of equipment, including saws, drills, even an air compressor. They were all items he owned. 'They were items that I've had it for several years and I love it.' The man said. 'Sell it or do whatever to get you some Milwaukee stuff again.' 'It means getting back to work sooner than later,' Hudson said, 'With everything here pretty much immediately. And that was pretty far out of sight.' The man donating this equipment related to Hudson's story. He said about ten years ago, a thief stole $25-30,000-worth of work equipment out of his trailer. He told me, that's why he wants to help. Hudson said since the trailer and everything inside was stolen, he's lost several grateful this equipment will help him get back to work. 'There are good people out there, it might not be your next-door neighbor but there are people that are going to help if you speak up. Woman says former firefighter sexually abused her, fears he will avoid punishment
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — FOX4 spoke with a woman who said she's worried that a former metro firefighter will avoid punishment after she said he sexually assaulted her as a child. FOX4 has agreed to protect her identity. There was a hearing for him Thursday in Johnson County, but not much happened. The unidentified woman said she is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse at the hands of Trevor Miller. The City of Overland Park and the Overland Park Fire Department (OPFD) are aware of an investigation into a former OPFD employee. 'As soon as the city became aware of the allegations, the former employee was placed on administrative leave,' a spokesperson with the OPFD told FOX4. 'Within a week of being placed on leave, the employee submitted his intention to retire immediately. 'He is no longer an employee of the city or the fire department. The city and Fire department are fully cooperating with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office investigation.' Miller was employed with the city from 1990 to 2023. 'He should be held more accountable for what he's done,' she said. 'For me, personally, growing up, I looked to him as a hero. He's a firefighter for the city. He saves lives.' Miller has been charged with one count of criminal sodomy, from an incident that happened when she was 14. The charge was filed in 2024. 'I knew Trevor growing up as my mother's friend. I saw him occasionally,' she told FOX4. The incident, which occurred in 2012, was reported to law enforcement in October of 2023. At that time, she said Miller was an adult she thought she could confide in. 'In the summer of 2012, I ended up meeting up with him,' she said. 'He took me out to look at Harleys. He taught me how to pump my gas, and he took me to his house and did inappropriate things to me and took me home.' She said she's worried that Miller may get offered a plea agreement – instead of being held accountable for what he's done. Miller has pleaded not guilty to the charge. The case was continued Thursday. The City of Overland Park's website still highlights his efforts to bring a 9/11 memorial to town. 'I don't think he is someone to be looked to as a respectable, trusted member of the community,' she said. 'People should know he's a monster.' Court documents also show that Miller was involved with the 'Camp Inferno' program, which introduced girls to firefighting—and 'he had to be reminded he wasn't there for socializing.' Records show he exchanged information with campers. 'I would definitely say there was grooming. I would definitely say there was sexual abuse,' she said. 'I do encourage people to come forward, but I definitely understand why many don't.' She told FOX4 that she remained silent until 2023, but was driven by two factors to speak out: Having a child of her own The birth of Miller's daughter FOX4 made several attempts to contact Miller's attorney by phone and email; neither inquiry was returned. MSHP ask for help locating missing Raytown woman
KANSAS CITY, MO. — The Missouri State Highway Patrol is asking for the public's help in locating a woman who's been missing for over a month. Caitlin is described as a Caucasian woman, 5 feet 6 inches in height, and was last seen in the Raytown area. Caitlin is also described as having a '666' tattoo above her left eyebrow, a tattoo of an eye on both of her hands, an anatomical heart on her upper right arm and a lion on her left thigh. Park Hill District partners with Strategos for school protection specialists Police are especially concerned for Caitlin's well-being as they believe she may be experiencing mental health challenges.
