The investigation revealed that a woman in her 70s was walking her three dogs when an unleashed dog attacked her and her Chihuahua. The other two dogs were not harmed.
When police arrived, they found the woman suffering from a severe bite wound to her arm, a broken finger, and several other minor wounds. Her pet Chihuahua was killed in the attack.
Police said they found the attack dog pinned down by men who had been witnesses to the attack. Officers then created a makeshift muzzle to control the dog and took it away from the scene.

The dog that initiated the attack was taken to the Humane Society, as well as the deceased Chihuahua.

How to prevent, stop a dog attack
FOX4 spoke with Dr. Melia Washington, chief veterinarian at Pet Resource Center of KC. She shared the following tips to prevent and stop a dog attack:
Loud noise/auditory stimulus (yelling in a deep voice, clapping, foghorn)
Bite stick
Pepper spray
'The first step would be obviously getting their attention,' she said. 'You can do that in various ways…yelling, clapping.
'We always had milk jugs with rocks in them. So just like shaking something, just a weird sound.'
She also said the tone of your voice makes a huge difference, so you want to yell in a deep and assertive tone.
Bite sticks are also a great way to stop a dog attack.
'The other thing is a bite stick,' Dr. Washington said. 'You can use the bite stick to stick in their mouth and pry their mouth open.'
Pepper spray is also good to carry, she said. You can spray it in the dog's eyes to try and stop an attack.

Spring Valley woman could face animal cruelty charges after striking Chihuahua
SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI)– A woman from Spring Valley may be charged with animal cruelty after a video surfaced of her allegedly striking a Chihuahua with a wooden plank, according to officials with the County of San Diego. The video, captured by a concerned citizen on July 21 in a Spring Valley apartment complex parking lot, appears to show the woman striking the dog with a wooden plank, covering it with a container and then kicking it, according to officials. The woman was reportedly living out of her vehicle at the time. According to officials, since the video surfaced, officers from both the County Animal Services and the San Diego Humane Society had attempted to locate the woman. Law enforcement officers with County Animal Services were able to locate the woman Sunday and take custody of the Chihuahua. The woman was read her Miranda rights and agreed to speak with the officers, according to the report. Officers said that, while the dog appears to be frightened, it is doing well and recovering as it receives a cruelty exam from the Animal Services veterinary staff. 'This is a clear example of why community vigilance matters,' Vaughn Maurice, director of the San Diego County Animal Services, said in a release. 'We are grateful to the citizen who recorded and reported this incident, allowing us to take swift action to protect this animal.' According to the report, County Animal Services will recommend filing animal cruelty charges against the woman and will submit the citizen's video to the DA's office as evidence. Animal services releases video of Spring Valley woman allegedly abusing Chihuahua
SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI)–Video released by the San Diego County Department of Animal Services shows alleged animal abuse and neglect, animal control officers say. A concerned resident took the video after witnessing what animal control officers say was a woman in Spring Valley hitting a chihuahua repeatedly with a wooden plank, then covering the dog with a plastic bucket and kicking the bucket. Spring Valley woman could face animal cruelty charges after striking Chihuahua 'It's disturbing, it's heartbreaking,' said Director Vaughn Maurice. 'It's just disgusting, no animal ever for any reason should be treated that way.' Over the weekend, animal control officers made contact with the woman at a Spring Valley apartment complex on Elkelton Boulevard. The woman has not yet been formally charged with any crime, but officers say she acknowledged the video and said she was upset because the dog went to the bathroom inside. 'Unfortunately, in cases like this, by the time we get to the animal, the animal is already deceased. That's not the case this time, so that's the good news,' said Maurice. The case has been forwarded to the District Attorney's office for review, and they'll decide whether or not to file any charges. The two-year-old dog will remain in the care of animal control officers until she's rehabilitated and ready to be placed into a new home. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
