Surinder Khanna Criticises Ravindra Jadeja's Lack of Aggression: 'Be A Hero...'

Surinder Khanna criticized Ravindra Jadeja for lacking aggression on Day 5 of the third Test against England. Despite Jadeja's unbeaten 61, India lost by 22 runs.
Former India wicket-keeper batter Surinder Khanna believes that Ravindra Jadeja should have shown more aggression on Day 5 of the third Test between India and England, following the visitors' narrow 22-run defeat at Lord's.
While chasing a target of 193, India's top and middle order struggled against the unpredictable bounce on the pitch, leaving Jadeja with a daunting task as the team found themselves at 82/7. Jadeja then played a determined innings, scoring an unbeaten 61 off 181 deliveries, but ultimately couldn't lead India to victory.
In a conversation with IANS, Khanna shared his thoughts, saying that Jadeja's knock will not be remembered as he could not become a hero.
'We don't have a batter that can bat with tailenders. Once he was set, maybe he could have scored more runs. I think he will be thinking that he could have made more strokes. When the ball gets soft, Bumrah, Siraj will not be scoring runs; you have to win the match and be a hero. People will forget this 60 (61) not out," said Khanna.
India now trails the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 1-2 and faces an uphill battle to win the series.
Despite Washington Sundar's impressive second innings bowling, dismissing Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Jamie Smith, Khanna believes Kuldeep Yadav should be considered for the fourth Test.
'These scores are tricky; when the score is higher, you are more careful. One needs to give credit to England; they brought in Archer and executed what they planned. There was very little to take away from both sides," Khanna said.
'We can't be rigid; yes, Sundar got important wickets, but I feel Kuldeep Yadav can be a better bet. I always feel that the way the wicket reacts in the fourth innings, Kuldeep can be effective," Khanna added.
At Lord's, following England's first-innings post of 387 runs, India delivered a powerful response by matching England's score exactly. This remarkable event represented only the ninth occasion in the annals of Test cricket that opposing sides had finished their first innings with precisely the same number of runs.
Subsequently, India's bowling attack executed a precise display in the second innings, dismissing England for a total of 192. Washington Sundar was the standout performer, securing four vital wickets and establishing an achievable chase for the touring Indian team.
Commencing the final day's play at 58/4, India struggled against England's consistently accurate fast bowlers, finding themselves eight wickets down by lunch. Yet, Ravindra Jadeja stayed defiant, compiling a courageous and splendid 61 not out from 181 balls, building determined, patient partnerships of 30, 35, and 23 with Nitish Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj, respectively, to edge India closer.
Even with the maximum effort from Jadeja and the tail-enders, India ultimately fell painfully shy of a stunning win, getting dismissed for 170 after facing 74.5 overs.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi's day out at Lord's; what did India U-19 star do during visit to Home of Cricket?

It's a dream for every cricketer to play at Lord's one day in his or career. With his eyes fixed on the Honours Board on the names like KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and other Indian stalwarts, Vaibhav Suryavanshi's quite ambition of featuring alongside the big names in world cricket took off when the India U-19 team visited the Home of Cricket recently. Suryavanshi is a part of the India U-19 side in their tour of England. While the whole Indian U-19 team watched Shubman Gill etch his name into history books in Birmingham, the future India stars were given a tour of Lord's where their seniors suffered a collapse while chasing 193 against England in the third Test. In a video shared by the BCCI, the Blue Colts were in awe of the dreamy stadium as they witnessed Lord's iconic spaces - the Long Room, players' balcony, where they also clicked a group picture. However, Suryavanshi stole the spotlight in a two minute 31 seconds video, where the Rajasthan Royals star was drawn to the Lord's dressing room and its famed Honours Board. Its not only a tour but an inspiration for the young boys, opined head coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar, who was a part of the tour tour in 1994. 'It's a very big moment. One is the history of Lord's, and second, there are so many great achievements here by our countrymen. It's great to know the legacy this place has. "We toured Lord's in 1994 as Under-19s as well. So I could relate to what they're feeling — the boards in the dressing rooms where the achievements are written, the fifers and the hundreds — these things really inspire you," Kanitkar said. Besides the spotlight on Suryavanshi, it was a big day for India U-19 captain Ayush Mhatre, who celebrated his birthday at Lord's balcony. 'It's a very special day for me that my birthday was celebrated at Lord's, and my cake cutting happened at the venue,' Mhatre said. 'There will never be a bigger moment in my life, but this biggest moment feels very special. After seeing all of this, I can't wait for the day when I can come here to play and bat,' added the Chennai Super Kings star. In their tour of England, India won the youth ODI series 3-2 and drew the first youth Test. The second game starts on July 20.

ICC penalises Pratika Rawal for on-field conduct, England fined for slow over-rate

The ICC handed out fines to India's Pratika Rawal and the England women's cricket team following the opening ODI at Southampton on Thursday, July 18. The charges relate to two on-field incidents during the batting in the 18th over, Rawal made physical contact with England bowler Lauren Filer while taking a single. Later in the innings, after being dismissed, she was involved in another altercation, this time bumping into Sophie Ecclestone. Praggnanandhaa loses to Caruana after 7-game marathon lasting over 10 hours; Arjun Erigaisi, Hans Niemann in semis

Arjun Erigaisi entered the semi-final of the Las Vegas leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour on Friday after prevailing over Nodirbek Abdusattorov in a straightforward two-game contest at the Wynn casino hotel. But what Arjun's game lacked in drama — and in length — his good friend Praggnanandhaa delivered: the Indian played out a seven-game royal rumble against Fabiano Caruana that lasted just over 10 hours. In the end, unfortunately, Praggnanandhaa lost. Arjun and Caruana will be joined in the semi-finals by Hans Niemann and Levon Aronian. The Praggnanandhaa vs Fabiano Caruana, which lasted for 10 hours, had plenty of drama: rooks being blundered, both players winning on demand, and even a unique Armageddon game where players had to make secret bids on time they would get on their clock. 'It's amazing. I've had a few of these matches, but none quite this long. And also with so many swings, you know, losing the first game and then coming back and then also losing with white… I thought it should be over at that point, but then somehow coming back in the rapid and then reversing. The Armageddon was also crazy. It was very, very complicated. And then he was also trying to flag me, but at some point I looked at the clock, I saw I had 17 seconds. I looked like a few minutes later, I still had 17 seconds. I thought, okay, I'm probably not going to get flagged,' Caruana told the official Freestyle Chess YouTube handle. The first game of the Praggnanandhaa vs Caruana showdown saw the Indian claim a win with white pieces, which meant that the American needed to win on demand in the reverse game with white pieces himself. Caruana did just that after a little help from Praggnanandhaa, who suddenly blundered his rook under time pressure. With the two 30 min (+ 30 sec per move increment) games proving inconclusive, both players were back on the board to battle it out in two 10 min (+ 10 sec per move) games. Here too, Praggnanandhaa won the first game, this time with black pieces. Then, he lost the reverse fixture with white pieces. Now the matter would be decided with an even frenetic pace: two games of 5+2 blitz games. In the first one, there was a wild time drama on the board was reflected on the evaluation bar which rocked up and down like a plane in turbulence with every couple of moves. Finally, Caruana emerged victorious. Now Praggnanandhaa needed to win on demand. And he did, thus forcing a unique Armageddon battle. The Armageddon format usually sees the player with white pieces have more time on the clock, but they need to win. The player with black pieces have less time on their clock, but they just have to hold out a draw to secure victory. At the Las Vegas event of the Freestyle Grand Slam Tour, there was a unique twist to this, with both players bidding the time they would want to play as black. Praggnanandhaa bid 4:27 for playing black, Caruana bid 4:02. So Praggnanandhaa played with white with five minutes on the clock while Caruana had draw odds with 4:02. It was there that Praggnanandhaa finally yielded. Caruana has played a few Armageddon games in the past and drew from those experiences. 'I got black in Armageddon every single time. I think that I realized probably it's good to have black I don't know why, but it feels better to have black, even if you're down a minute. In each Armageddon game, I felt like it's easier to play a bit faster. With black, you have less to worry about. With white, you always have to consider so many things and it gets in your head that you have to get an advantage or something. So, it feels a bit easier to play freely with black, which is why I went a bit lower (with his time for black bid).' In the other games of the tournament, Arjun defeated Nodirbek by winning the second 30+30 game after a hard-fought draw in the first game. Meanwhile, in the Lower Bracket, Carlsen defeated Vidit Gujrathi in both games. Besides Carlsen, Wesley So, Vincent Keymer and Leinier Dominguez also won their ties, thus eliminating Gujrathi, Sam Sevian, Ray Robson and Bibisara Assaubayeva — all four players were eliminated and shared 13th place at the tournament.
