Greenland coastal village bracing for potential collision with giant iceberg
The skyscraper-sized piece of ice is on a potential collision course with the harbour of Innaarsuit, a village in Greenland's Avannaata Municipality.
It originally sidled up to the village last week, but seemed to have drifted away before reappearing on Monday and remaining precariously close.
Local authorities have issued warnings to residents as the iceberg sits near the Royal Greenland fish factory and the local grocery store. People have been advised to take care when in that part of the community.
Emergency services are encouraging families not to go in a group towards the store. They are also asking people who have difficulty walking to be extra careful. The fish-processing factory has been temporarily closed.
Meanwhile, locals have been advised to be careful when sailing to or from the settlement.
While some residents are concerned, others are reportedly excited by the rare and dramatic sight.
There are few options for dealing with threatening icebergs. One of the main concerns with a large iceberg is that it will 'calve' (split), with pieces falling into the ocean, resulting in large waves that will swamp nearby coastal communities.
As a result, authorities monitor icebergs for cracks and holes that may result in calving.
The first line of defence is for nearby residents to evacuate. That occurred in 2018, when this same Greenlandic community was similarly threatened.
Other options have been considered but remain experimental. They involve explosives to break up the iceberg and towing. These tactics present monumental challenges.
The U.S. Coast Guard says aside from difficulty involved in successfully getting onto an iceberg, demolition would require 'a 1,000 lb. charge of conventional explosives…to break up approximately 70,000 cubic ft of ice (an iceberg weighing 1,960 tons).' Further, a hundred of these charges would be needed to destroy an average iceberg, (presumably more for the mammoth berg threatening Innaarsuit at this time).
Melting a medium-sized iceberg of 100,000 tons would theoretically require heat from the 'combustion of over a quarter of a million gallons of gasoline' says the Coast Guard.
'Such methods are, of course, economically, as well as practically unsound.'
Icebergs drift south after calving from Arctic and western Greenland glaciers. They are regular sights in spring-early summer. Transported by Atlantic Ocean currents to waters off Greenland, Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as Cape Breton Island, they eventually melt in somewhat warmer southern climes. An iceberg that drifts south rarely lasts more than a year.
Icebergs flow at speeds of up to seven kilometres a year, first floating in Arctic bays before passing into the Labrador Current and south into what is known as 'Iceberg Alley.'
Every year about 40,000 medium to large icebergs calve from glaciers but only 400-800 make it as far south as St. John's. However, those numbers can vary greatly from year to year based on temperature, ocean current, wind direction and sea/pack ice.
Often huge, ninety per cent of an iceberg sits below the ocean surface.

Satellites reveal a hidden lake burst through Greenland Ice Sheet in 2014, causing major flooding and a deep crater

A hidden lake beneath the Greenland Ice Sheet unexpectedly drained more than a decade ago, fracturing the ice surface and forming a large crater — an event only recently uncovered by Earth-observing satellites. The massive ice sheet, located in a remote region of northern Greenland, harbors a subglacial lake that appears to have flooded in 2014, releasing 23.8 billion gallons (90 million cubic meters) of meltwater over the course of 10 days — roughly equivalent to nine hours of peak flow over Niagara Falls. The meltwater from the subglacial lake surged upwards, the satellites showed, bursting through the ice surface. The rapid flooding that followed carved a crater 279 feet (85 meters) deep and 0.77 square miles (2 square kilometers) wide into the surface of the ice sheet. The flood's upward force also lifted blocks of ice 82 feet (25 meters) above the surface and left behind deep fractures and scoured markings, according to a statement from the European Space Agency (ESA). "The existence of subglacial lakes beneath the Greenland Ice Sheet is still a relatively recent discovery, and — as our study shows — there is still much we don't know about how they evolve and how they can impact on the ice sheet system," Jade Bowling, lead author of the study from Lancaster University, said in the statement. "Importantly, our work demonstrates the need to better understand how often they drain, and, critically, what the consequences are for the surrounding ice sheet." This startling event was discovered using data from multiple Earth-observing satellites, including ESA's CryoSat, the Copernicus Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 missions, and NASA's ICESat-2, as well as 3D models of the ice sheet surface from the ArcticDEM project. The amount of meltwater released from underneath the ice in 2014 is considered one of the largest recorded subglacial floods in Greenland, according to the statement. Beyond revealing the dramatic surface changes, the satellite data has reshaped scientists' understanding of how water behaves under ice. Previously, scientists believed meltwater generally flowed down from the surface to the ice base, eventually draining into the ocean. This study shows that water can also flow upward, forced through the ice by intense pressure, even in areas previously thought to have frozen beds. This upward surge of water fractured the overlying ice sheet, creating new channels for the water to escape. This kind of upward water flow could affect how ice sheets respond to a warming world, which has not yet been accounted for in current climate models. Understanding these processes is key to improving predictions of Greenland's contribution to future sea-level rise, the researchers said. Their findings were published on Wednesday (July 30) in the journal Nature Geoscience.

August Has 7 Major Astronomical Events Including Meteor Showers and a Mercury Sighting
It's hard to beat a summer night beneath the stars, especially in August, when the shimmery Milky Way core is at its brightest. Late August also brings the return of the year's stronger-than-average northern lights season to high-latitude destinations like Iceland and Greenland, not to mention meteor shower peaks and striking planet-moon sightings. Here are the top sights to watch for in August's night sky, and don't forget to head to a dark-sky park or stargazing hotel for the best view. The Eta Eridanid meteor shower will peak overnight from Aug. 7 to Aug. 8. While this isn't the most prolific meteor shower, it's worth watching for in the pre-dawn hours of Aug. 8, especially since it coincides with the active Perseids. The spectacle produces about three meteors per hour; look for its shooting stars near the Eridanus constellation, which hangs low in the southeast sky August's full sturgeon moon will glow in the southeast skies on Aug. 9, with Saturn nearby to the east. Native American fishing tribes gave this moon its name, according to Royal Museums Greenwich. While you can see it throughout the night, it's best to watch during moonrise — roughly an hour after sunset — when the lunar orb appears larger than normal thanks to the moon illusion. Around 11 p.m. local time, the waning gibbous moon and Saturn will inch above the eastern horizon, then tango together through the sky until dawn. Neptune, which hovers just above Saturn, is joining the fun, but you'll need a telescope to see it. Early the mornings of Aug. 11 to Aug. 13, Venus and Jupiter—two of the night sky's brightest planets—will appear within roughly one degree, or about a pinky-finger distance, of each other. The planets will pair up in the eastern sky around 3 a.m. local time; they'll continue to climb heavenward until sunrise. The Perseid meteor shower is one of the most celebrated astronomical events, and this year, it will reach its peak overnight from Aug. 12 to Aug. 13, according to stargazing app SkySafari. The luminous waning gibbous moon will make viewing tricky, but it's still worth heading out. The Perseids is known to produce bright meteors and even fireballs that will shine through the bright lunar light. For optimal viewing, watch above the eastern sky after midnight into the early morning hours. Mercury orbits close to the sun, so it's typically tough to view the swift planet, but that changes come Aug. 19. This morning, Mercury will reach its farthest distance from the sun, giving stargazers around an hour of spectacular planet-gazing before sunrise. Watch for Mercury, as well as Venus, Jupiter, and the crescent moon, above the eastern horizon. You can catch the trio aligned in the morning sky for about a week after Aug. 19, too. See the sliver of a crescent moon and orange-tinged Mars couple up near the western horizon in the evening hours of Aug. 26. You won't have much time to admire the duo—they set around an hour after sunset—but if you do stay out for all-night stargazing, you'll be treated with more planet alignments just before dawn.
