High spirits, low profile: Nalanda liquor smugglers who dressed down to cash in

Time of India13 hours ago

Patna: Pankaj and Kanchan, two young men from Nalanda district, led double lives – humble by appearance, but extravagant in lifestyle. By day, they posed as junk collectors and by night, they were liquor barons, ferrying sacks of foreign booze and beer from Uttar Pradesh to dry Bihar, fuelling a thriving black-market empire.
The duo's clever disguise – tattered clothes and frayed slippers – fooled many. Few in their hometown knew the secret behind their sudden rise – plush homes, premium bikes and a carefree swagger funded by illicit liquor sales. But their charade unravelled on Sunday when the Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Gaya Junction caught them red-handed.
"The operation took place at Platform No. 1 of Gaya Junction," said Gaya GRP station SHO Rajesh Kumar.
"RPF personnel, who had been maintaining vigilant surveillance of suspicious activities, spotted two people disembarking from a train with suspicious bags. Upon noticing the police presence, the suspects attempted to flee but were quickly arrested by the alert RPF team," he added.
Inside the bags – 48 cans of beer and 120 bottles of premium foreign liquor worth around Rs 23,000. During interrogation, the pair admitted to long-running smuggling operations, transporting liquor via train to Gaya, and then on to Nalanda, where they sold it at up to three times the cost.

"The arrested accused wore very simple clothes to represent themselves as being from a poor background," the SHO added. "It was further revealed that they built their own houses and owned premium bikes from the money earned from the liquor smuggling. They further admitted to living a lavish life in their village," he said.
From railway platforms to rural riches, their tale is one of audacity and deception until the law finally caught up.

Los Angeles curfew to continue for 'couple more days': mayor

Los Angeles curfew to continue for 'couple more days': mayor A nightly curfew in Los Angeles will continue for "a couple more days," Mayor Karen Bass said Sunday, the ninth day of protests that have seen US President Donald Trump launch a military-backed crackdown. Demonstrators began protesting on June 6 against immigration raids launched by the Trump administration to round up undocumented migrants in the heavily Latino city in Democrat-led California. The rallies have been mostly peaceful and confined to a small area of Downtown Los Angeles, but marred by sporadic and eye-catching violence which Republican Trump has used as a pretext to send in 4,000 National Guard and 700 Marines. The extraordinary deployment came over the protests of local officials who have insisted that the situation was under control. Bass issued an overnight curfew on June 10 on the downtown area at the heart of the protests to stop incidents of vandalism and looting. On Sunday she said she is hoping that the number of people behind the violent incidents "will taper off". "So I know the curfew will be on for at least a couple more days," she said in a televised interview with local news channel KTLA, adding that she cannot predict how many more days exactly. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like At 82, she dances, dresses as she wishes and dismisses her 'old-fashioned' critics CNA Read More Undo "We don't know how many raids are going to happen, we don't know what the character of the raids will be, and every time that happens it really generates a lot of anger in the city," she said. Trump, seeminly unfazed by the protests, on Sunday directed federal authorities to ramp up their deportation efforts, including in Los Angeles. Bass noted the anger and fear that the raids by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency have generated in Los Angeles. "People are afraid to leave their homes," she said, adding that raids have at times felt "indiscriminate." "This is the United States. You are not supposed to have to show your papers if you go out in public," she said. "It's hard for me to believe it's targeted." Trump said on social media that ICE agents had been subjected to "violence, harassment and even threats" and ordered them to "do all in their power" to effect mass deportations. Los Angeles was mostly calm on Sunday after a massive rally and march a day earlier -- part of the "No Kings" series of anti-Trump protests across the country -- saw thousands of people turn out to condemn the raids and the military crackdown. A small group of demonstrators marched around City Hall during the sunny afternoon under the watchful eye of law enforcement, including several woman clad in bikinis carrying signs with slogans including "Hot Girl Summer Melt ICE".

Director Sanal Kumar Sasidharan accuses Mohanlal's 'Thudarum': ‘They stole the skeleton of my story'; shares post

(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) Filmmaker Sanal Kumar Sasidharan has come forward with allegations against the makers of the Mohanlal starrer 'Thudarum', directed by Tharun Moorthy. In a detailed Facebook post, Sanal claimed that the core idea and structure of 'Thudarum' were lifted from a script he wrote in 2020, titled 'Theeyattam'. While the storyline has been modified, Sanal believes the original foundation of his work remains evident throughout the film. 'They stole the skeleton of my story' 'I watched the film 'Thudarum'. It is essentially a theft of the core idea from a script I wrote back in 2020 titled 'Theeyattam'. The film has been made by stealing the skeleton of my story,' Sanal wrote. Sanal explained that 'Theeyattam' centers around the story of Ambi, an autorickshaw driver who gets wrongly implicated in the brutal murder and beheading of a man found in his vehicle. According to him, this core plot has been replicated in Thudarum without any credit or acknowledgment. A lifted dialogue and forgotten conscience? Sanal pointed out that a specific line from his original screenplay—'If you kill, it's a sin; if you eat, it's cleansed'—has appeared in 'Thudarum', despite having no contextual relevance. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! 'Will be publishing screenplay soon' Sanal also revealed that a major production house had once agreed to produce Theeyattam, with actors like Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Murali Gopy, and Sudheer Karamana reading the script. 'Given that five years have passed, it's possible they may have forgotten,' he wrote, adding, 'I will be publishing my screenplay here soon.'

Man nabbed for illegal sale of railway e-tickets in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Satellite Goods Terminal, Whitefield, arrested a man for the unauthorised procurement and sale of railway e-tickets. On Friday, an RPF team raided a firm in Narasapura, Kolar district, and found the man engaged in the illegal activity. He was issued a summons under Section 180B of the Railways Act, 1989, and during the inquiry, he admitted to running an unauthorised ticketing business. According to a press release, the accused used multiple personal IRCTC user IDs to book e-tickets, which he sold to customers on demand, charging a commission of Rs 200–Rs 300 per ticket. He voluntarily handed over the mobile phone that was used. An examination of the device revealed four IRCTC user IDs and passwords linked to his email, one live e-ticket worth Rs 2,335, and 15 completed journey tickets worth Rs 42,310, a total seizure of Rs 44,645. After completing legal procedures, the man was booked under Section 143 of the Railways Act at the Bengaluru Cantonment Post and later released on a self-surety bail bond. The raid and investigation were led by sub-inspector Venkatesh Murthy and his team.
