Pac-12, Mountain West headed back to court after mediation fails over millions in ‘poaching' fees
The conferences failed to reach an agreement by Tuesday's deadline
in mediation
that began in May. The Pac-12 has requested a hearing on the pending motion to dismiss on Sept. 9.
'The Pac-12 remains committed to moving forward with legal action in response to the Mountain West's attempt to impose so-called 'poaching penalties,' provisions we believe are unlawful and intended to obstruct our ability to act in the best interests of our student-athletes and member institutions,' the Pac-12 said in a statement.
The Pac-12 and some of the schools it is adding filed lawsuits last year, claiming the poaching clause it agreed to when it signed a scheduling agreement for its football teams for last season was invalid.
The clause called for payments to the Mountain West of $10 million for the first team that left, with the amount growing by $500,000 for every additional team. That was on top of the $17 million-plus exit fees schools were responsible for as part of a different agreement.
'The Mountain West provided the Pac-12 institutions with a lifeline, offering a full football schedule for the 2024 season,' the Mountain West said in a statement. 'The Pac-12 willingly signed the scheduling agreement with full knowledge of the contractual provisions and is attempting to avoid its legal obligations. The Mountain West will aggressively protect the interests of our member institutions and is fully prepared to hold the Pac-12 accountable.'
Colorado State, Utah State, San Diego State, Fresno State and Boise State are all set to join the Pac-12 starting in 2026. The conference added Texas State last month to reach the eight-team minimum to be eligible for an automatic bid for its conference champion in the College Football Playoff.
Oregon State and Washington State are the only remaining members following an exodus last year that threatened the conference's future. The two schools reached a scheduling agreement with the two schools so they could piece together a football schedule last season.
The Mountain West has added UTEP, Hawaii and Northern Illinois for football starting in 2026.

Getting Rutlege's now confirmed A&M fandom out of the way, the SEC host expressed her belief in the Aggies' ability to get through what is widely seen as one of the toughest schedules in the country. "I think they're gonna be pretty good, Marcel Reed coming back, he's got way more experience under his belt, and getting thrown into the fire you saw some flashes, you saw some freshman moments, right, it's a moment of an experience, and now he's got time under his belt." Rutledge is even more confident in Texas A&M's defense improving with Mike Elko taking over as the play caller, which should help with early and late-game adjustments that were an issue last season. "I think Elko taking over the defensive play calling is big, that's hit background, his bread and butter" said Rutlege. "He is such a good coach and he has impressed me in so many ways, and I just think its, and I know A&M fans are like, "we've got to win" and this has been the story, right? There's been lot's of money spent, and how you see it actually translate, it will be better in my opinion, and there are key parts in the schedule that are really going to matter. Usyk-Dubois 2: How to watch, what's at stake, betting odds
Associated Press LONDON (AP) — Daniel Dubois gets a second shot at Oleksandr Usyk and this time the stakes are higher as the winner will become the undisputed world heavyweight champion. The pair will square off at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night almost two years after their first bout, which is best remembered for a controversial low blow by Dubois. Usyk stopped Dubois in the ninth round to retain his WBA, IBF and WBO belts. Victory for Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) would see the Ukrainian become a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion. It's a feat he first accomplished in May 2024 by beating Tyson Fury on a split decision and taking Fury's WBC belt. Usyk then relinquished his IBF belt — with Dubois (22-2, 21 KOs) the recipient — just over a year ago to focus on a rematch with Fury. The last British heavyweight to hold every major belt was Lennox Lewis 25 years ago. When is the fight? The ringwalks are expected to be at around 9:45 p.m. local time (4:45 p.m. ET). The first fight on the undercard will begin around 5:40 p.m. What happened the first time Usyk and Dubois fought? It was held in Wroclaw, Poland, which practically speaking was home territory for Usyk, whose country is still defending itself from a Russian military invasion. The southpaw Usyk controlled the fight by using his right jab effectively, finding holes in Dubois' defense and causing the Briton's left eye to swell by the fourth round. The low blow in the fifth round remains the talking point — even this week. Dubois' punch sent Usyk to the canvas. Referee Luis Pabon had a clear view and ruled it an illegal low blow, though Dubois' camp accused Usyk of pretending to be hurt. Usyk was given nearly four minutes to recover. Usyk scored a knockdown late in the eighth round and ended it a round later with a straight right that dropped Dubois. Who have Usyk and Dubois fought recently? Since beating Dubois, Usyk secured back-to-back victories over Tyson Fury. Both fights took place in Riyadh and both went the full 12 rounds. The first was a split decision. The rematch last December was a unanimous decision. Dubois rebounded from his loss to Usyk with three wins, all by stoppages: Jarrell Miller in the 10th round; Filip Hrgovic in the eighth round; and Anthony Joshua in the fifth at Wembley. Dubois was scheduled to make a title defense against Joseph Parker in February but he backed out at the last minute citing an illness. What's at stake? So much. There is Usyk's undefeated record. The Ukrainian turns 39 in January so he's at the point of his career where every fight could be his last. Going out on top must be at least a little appealing. Plus, even though he clearly feasts on British opponents, he might not be as enthusiastic to face the likes of rising star Moses Itauma, a 20-year-old Slovakia-born British southpaw who has drawn comparisons to a young Mike Tyson. None of Itauma's past six opponents have lasted two rounds. For the 27-year-old Dubois, history awaits. He'd be the first British fighter since Lennox Lewis in 1999 to be the undisputed world heavyweight champion. Fury and Joshua have been much more heralded in their careers, but neither has been able to beat Usyk. They both fought him twice and lost. Dubois also wants to prove that his stunning knockout of Joshua last September in an IBF title defense was no fluke. BetMGM Sportsbook lists Usyk at 8/25, equivalent of a moneyline favorite of +312; and Dubois at 27/10 or +270. The odds on a draw are 17/1. Who is on the undercard?
