Overlooked Netflix war film hailed as 'natural crowd pleaser' telling 'ignored' story

Daily Record23-06-2025
Kerry Washington stars in The Six Triple Eight, which is a historical war drama that tells the remarkable true story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion
A 2024 historical war drama, directed by Tyler Perry and based on a true story, is being praised for shedding light on an important part of history and its overlooked heroes.
The Six Triple Eight, with Kerry Washington in the compelling lead role as Major Charity Adams, tells the story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion - an all-Black, all-female battalion formed during World War II. The film draws inspiration from Kevin M Hymel's article Fighting a Two-Front War, published in the February 2019 issue of WWII History magazine.

This war drama recounts the extraordinary true tale of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-Black and all-female unit deployed overseas during World War II. Their daunting task was to sort through millions of undelivered letters and packages intended for American soldiers serving in the war, reports the Express.

In the face of sexism, racism, and harsh wartime conditions in the 1940s, these women, under the leadership of Major Charity Adams, boosted morale on the front lines and demonstrated exceptional determination and excellence amidst unimaginable adversity - leaving a lasting legacy.
With a disappointing 55 per cent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, The Six Triple Eight was almost universally criticised by reviewers, many of whom focused more on Tyler Perry's directorial shortcomings than the actual narrative and performances. One critic praised Kerry Washington's performance in Tyler Perry's latest war drama, saying: "Kerry Washington's scene-stealing performance boosts Tyler Perry's cumbersome but inspiring war drama."
However, another was less impressed with Perry's direction, noting: "[Perry] can manage these soapy romantic beats, but charging the overall story with even the slightest hint of dramatic tension is beyond him." A different review highlighted both positives and negatives: "It's full of heart and has a story worth exposing to more people. And yet, Perry's shortcomings as a filmmaker hold this film back from being stronger."
The Six Triple Eight, which is available on Netflix, features the song The Journey, which received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song at the 97th Academy Awards. Some reviews were favourable towards the war drama, with one stating: "Easily delivering on the big emotional beats, The Six Triple Eight is a natural crowd pleaser."

Another reviewer described the film as a touching tribute: "The Six Triple Eight is a Frank Capra-esque feel-good story about heroes who are no longer forgotten."
Audience reactions to The Six Triple Eight have been largely positive, with one viewer commenting: "This is a really good period piece to watch, showing not only a piece of history that often is looked over, but also giving it to us in an entertaining way. The acting was good, story overall was good. Just good, good, good."
One enthusiast of the historical drama shared: "I'm a history buff and this is a story that definitely deserves to be told and it's lovely when the movie does the story justice. Great acting and script writing. Highly recommend."

The film boasts an impressive cast, with Denzel Washington leading alongside Ebony Obsidian, Susan Sarandon, Oprah Winfrey, Shanice Shantay, Milauna Jackson, Sarah Jeffery, Dean Norris, Pepi Sonuga, Sam Waterston, Moriah Brown, Gregg Sulkin, and Kylie Jefferson.
A viewer heaped accolades on the film, saying: "The Six Triple Eight...was an outstanding film, telling the story of amazing women! The story deserves more credit and more people to watch and learn the history of what these women did!".
Meanwhile, another succinctly expressed their enjoyment: "I loved this movie from start to finish!".

Anti-ageing brand used by Abbey Clancy giving away £200 worth of freebies this week

LYMA's anti-ageing laser treatment is the latest celeb-approved skincare gadget, and is currently on offer with a free gift When it comes to celebrity skincare routines, many involve in-salon treatments that can't be replicated at home. However, if you've been tempted to try out some celeb-approved high-tech treatments, we've found a laser device used by Abbey Clancy that comes with £200 worth of freebies. While lasers are often associated with hair removal, they can also rejuvenate skin by stimulating core cells, and currently, there's a deal on one such anti-ageing laser treatment. LYMA, adored by the likes of Miranda Kerr, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Naomie Harris, is offering a complimentary one-month LYMA Supplement starter kit worth £199 when customers purchase one of their laser devices. The LYMA Laser comes in at £1,999, while the more advanced LASER Pro is priced at £4,995. This kit amalgamates the brand's two key innovations: laser technology and next-generation supplementation that provides surface skin support and cellular support from within. 'I'm trying to cut down my alcohol intake and this 99p low-calorie drink converted me' Harrods beauty advent calendar returns after fragrance one sold out in 48 hours The free LYMA Supplement gift offers a blend of 11 ingredients, including turmeric extract, prebiotic beta glucans, plant-based vitamin D, stable vitamin K, ashwagandha extract and other components, which are said to aid with relaxation, stress and complexion. Usually retailing at £199, it's currently free of charge when purchasing one of the accompanying lasers. However, it's worth noting that the deal ends on August 15. Last year, ahead of the BRIT Awards, Abbey Clancy shared a video of herself getting the laser-based facial from LYMA, on her Instagram stories. She wrote: 'BRITS skin prep' and tagging the brand. Her treatment involved using two LYMA Lasers on either side of her face at the same time, with the treatment said to stimulate your skin cell renewal for younger-looking skin in a month. Shoppers can get a free gift when they purchase either the LYMA Laser or LASER Pro Free LYMA Buy here Product Description The LYMA Laser is a cold laser designed to make users' skin appear more youthful by activating a genetic switch within each cell. According to the brand, this process can enhance wrinkles, reverse sagging and diminish pigmentation. By dedicating just three minutes a day to using the product, customers could witness visible improvements in as little as 30 days - and it's reportedly a breeze to use. The LYMA Laser Pro takes things up a notch, allegedly tripling the potency of the standard LYMA Laser with a larger lens and expedited results, reports the Express. It's also pain-free, portable and suitable for all skin tones. It can be used over makeup, SPF and on the move, as both devices are cordless. For beauty enthusiasts exploring alternative options, the STYLPRO Pure Red LED Light Therapy Facial Device is available for £99 at Argos. The device purports to penetrate the skin deeply, resulting in a smoother, firmer, and more radiant complexion. Another option is the Sensee Professional LED Light Therapy Face Mask Pink, currently on sale for £139.99 at Boots, designed to brighten, tighten, purify, clarify and naturally reverse signs of ageing. Despite the abundance of alternative choices available, the LYMA collection is garnering remarkable reviews on their website. One customer revealed: "Expensive but I think it's making a difference and will hopefully cut the cost of going for facials." Another user commented: "I've been using the laser for six weeks, once a day. While it is a hefty time commitment, I feel like I'm getting a $300 (£221) spa facial every day. It's fairly easy to work into my routine, simple and painless to use, doubles as a fancy gua sha tool and leaves my skin glowing." One buyer detailed their personal skincare transformation, explaining: "Though I haven't finished the full three months, I am seeing positive results on my 71-year-old skin: nice smoother texture, lessening fine lines and maybe some reduction in my deep wrinkles." They went on: "Have trouble using it every day, but usually do 5-6 times a week. Must say, I do find some treatments very relaxing and something I look forward to doing. Planning to splurge on the Pro version - cutting the treatment time will help me to be more consistent." However, not all experiences were completely positive, as one purchaser outlined a frustrating incident. They explained: "Did have only one negative once. I received a package that had one of the capsules opened and it stained everywhere it touched and bled through the container that I have from LYMA onto my white marble nightstand." In contrast, another user expressed their excitement: "Love this so much! Been waiting forever for it to be allowed in the US". For those eager to give it a go, the LYMA Supplement starter kit is currently up for grabs at no cost for the first month.

Horror film with ‘greatest twist of all time' now available to stream

If you're a horror fan who gets a kick out of a good twist, this 2000s Nicole Kidman film is right up your street. Starring Oscar-winning Australian-American actress Kidman, 58, in the lead role of Grace, The Others is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, following a woman living on a family estate in the Channel Islands with her two photosensitive children. Set during World War II, Grace is awaiting news on her missing husband while attempting to protect her children from harm by the sun due to their rare disease. Things take a sinister turn, however, when Grace's mother, Anne (Alakina Mann), claims she is seeing ghosts, and while Grace initially brushes the spookiness off as their staff playing tricks, she soon comes to realise something far more menacing is at play. The 2001 supernatural flick is famous for its huge plot twist, which viewers have long branded one of the best in cinema. Thanks to its cast's performances and gripping story, The Others was a box office smash, grossing $210million (£182m) worldwide on a $17m (14.7m) budget. It was lauded by critics, earning 15 nominations and eight wins at the 16th Goya Awards, and becoming the first English-language film without a word of Spanish dialogue to triumph in the best film category at Spain's Goya Awards. Kidman was also recognised in other best actress categories for her role, including at the Golden Globes. Ultimately, the Alejandro Amenábar-directed horror is highly regarded as not just one of the 2000s' best movies but, for many, the greatest horror ever made. As for what fans have had to say, The Others, which was shot in northern Spain, has a respectable 77% audience score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, as well as 84% from critics. Among the 250,000+ reviews, user Ry H branded it with 4.5 stars as recently as July 2025, writing: 'My favorite horror movie ever with one of the biggest twists that I never saw coming.' 'The Others lives up to the unpredictability hype, you can't guess what's happening. The characters are incredibly well-written. Their decisions, the plot makes sense until everything gets a new meaning', writes Mate P. 'Has to be the best suspense movie of all time, period. The acting and filming are fantastic', echoes Josh K. Julian S agrees: 'THE OTHERS finds Kidman at her most mesmerizing, carrying a chilling slow-burn thriller that builds to a twist so sharp, it leaves you breathless.' 'This one still holds up as one of the great supernatural thrillers. Great twist, wonderful acting, especially by the children', pens Jason W. Others praise the fright flick for its ability to build tension and create a dread-filled atmosphere, with many compelled to watch for a second time after the twist is uncovered, forcing them to rethink everything they thought they knew. More Trending The Others is one of many of Kidman's projects in the horror and thriller genres, as she's also had roles in The Invasion (2007), Before I Go to Sleep (2014), and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), to name a few. She recently starred in 2025's Holland, alongside Matthew Macfadyen and Gael García Bernal, playing a mother who, upon unearthing her husband's infidelity, discovers her picture-perfect life was full of secrets. Of course, Kidman also famously plays the lead in Nine Perfect Strangers, a thriller drama series that recently dropped a second season. The Others is available to stream now on Amazon Prime Video. Globally, Google searches for 'British men' went up 21 per cent over the past year. And according to dating site 65 per cent of its 108,000 members are American women. Meanwhile, US director Lena Dunham's new semi-autobiographical Netflix drama, Too Much, tells the story of a New York woman who moves to London following a break-up and falls for an English musician. Just a few of the stars following in her footsteps and bagging a Brit hunk are singer Olivia Rodrigo, actress Zendaya, and billionaire heiress Nicola Peltz, who earlier this month renewed her wedding vows with Brooklyn Beckham. More recently, Love Island UK's first transatlantic winner Toni Laites admitted that she sees 'no reason to be in America any more' after falling for East London lad Cach Mercer on the ITV show. Here are seven of the British men who have proved irresistible to US celebs. Tom Holland opens up about 'one day becoming a dad' as GMA shares sweet photo of star with girlfriend Zendaya Louis Partridge and Olivia Rodrigo 8 US singer Olivia Rodrigo has fallen for Brit actor Louis Partridge Credit: Getty TAKING to the stage at Glastonbury in June, Drivers License singer Olivia made her allegiances known. 'I love England so much,' the Californian told the 120,000-strong crowd. 'I love how nobody judges you for having a pint at noon. I love English sweets… and, as luck would have it, I love English boys.' Specifically, she loves one English boy – actor Louis Partridge. The pair, both 22, first sparked romance rumours in October 2023, when they were pictured with their arms around the other's waist in London. They then made their red carpet debut as a couple at the Venice Film Festival in August 2024, where Louis was promoting his TV series, Disclaimer. The pair have more recently been spotted together at Wimbledon. They have mostly remained coy about their relationship, with Londoner Louis telling British Vogue last year: 'Dating probably shouldn't be done in the public eye… I think she's got tons and tons of eyes on her case.' So Olivia's very public tribute to the Enola Holmes star on stage at the Worthy Farm festival is testament to their strong feelings. Tom Holland and Zendaya 8 Zendaya has moved from California to London to be with Brit Tom Holland Credit: Getty ONE of our most famous transatlantic couples, Tom and Zendaya got engaged earlier this year, with the British actor proposing with a £200,000 ring. Since meeting Tom, 29, on the set of Spider-Man in 2016, Zendaya, 28, has proved herself to be a true anglophile. She has moved from California to Richmond, South West London, where the pair reside in a £3million mansion close to where he grew up. Residents are said to leave them alone and they are frequently spotted walking around Richmond Park. Last year Zendaya, 28, confirmed she is Tom's biggest fan, paying tribute to her man while promoting her own movie, Dune 2. 'I think someone who has beautiful charisma, not on the Dune cast, but personally works for me, is Mr Tom Holland,' she said, adding that 'he's great at just talking to people, getting to know people.' And last week Zendaya was spotted supporting Tom while he filmed scenes for their upcoming Spider-Man flick in Surrey. Matty Healy and Gabbriette Bechtel 8 Londoner Matty Healy is engaged to Californian Gabbriette HE did not receive a glowing review from his American ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift, who slammed him in songs The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived and I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can). But Londoner Matty's charms have fared better on Californian Gabbriette, 28. The 1975 frontman, 36, started dating the model in 2023 and they got engaged last year. But Gabbriette has revealed they are in no rush to wed. 'It might take a while because I'm bad at planning stuff,' she said last month. 'But the wedding bells are somewhere up there.' Meanwhile, the model has another fan in Matty's famous mum, Denise Welch. The Loose Women star recently appeared on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live! and took the opportunity to pay tribute to her future daughter-in-law, while also taking a subtle swipe at Taylor. 'Matty has taken it all in completely good grace,' she said. 'He's very happy with his amazing fiancée Gabbriette – who is gorgeous – so we've moved on.' Leo Woodall and Meghann Fahy 8 Meghann and Leo have a 'great deal in common' despite their hometowns being worlds away Credit: Getty AS co-stars on season two of The White Lotus in 2022, Meghann and Leo had their fair share of on-screen romance with other people. But it was not long until they only had eyes for each other – and after the private pair were spotted kissing in New York in 2023, they finally hard launched their relationship on social media in early 2024. Though her hometown of Massachusetts is worlds away from Leo's West London roots, Meghann, 35, has said they have a great deal in common – not least their high-profile careers. She revealed earlier this year: 'I think that it's just really great to be deeply understood… There's so many weird things about this industry and what we do, so I think there's just something really lovely about being with somebody who really gets that.' As for Leo, 28, he has called their relationship his 'safe space,' which leaves little confusion as to why, like Bridget Jones in the series' latest film, Meghann is Mad About The Boy. Harry Charles and Eve Jobs 8 Eve Jobs looked across the Atlantic to find her happy-ever-after with Team GB champion Harry Charles Credit: Instagram SHE is the American heiress who could have her pick of any fella in her home country. But Eve Jobs – the daughter of late Apple founder Steve – looked across the Atlantic to find her happy-ever-after with Team GB champion Harry Charles, 26. As an accomplished equestrian – once ranked the world's fifth best rider under-25 – it is no wonder Eve, 27, has fallen for the Olympic-gold showjumper, from Hampshire. The pair reportedly met due to their shared love of horses and started dating in 2022. They got engaged two years later, around the same time the former Tatler It Girl and model was cheering Harry on at the 2024 Paris Games. The couple wed last month in a lavish £5million wedding in the Cotswolds, with a celebrity guest list including former US Vice President Kamala Harris. Last week Eve shared their first official wedding portrait, telling her social media followers it had been 'the most magical week'. George Rollinson and Ashley Roberts 8 Ashley has been loved up with Brit artist and tattooist George since 2023 Credit: GC Images RADIO host Ashley made the UK her home many years ago, but she didn't initially commit to the British-boy assignment – famously dating Italian stallion Giovanni Pernice in 2018. The former Pussycat Doll, 43, has since discovered the local fare and has been loved up with artist and tattooist George, 25, since 2023. The pair went public in early 2024 and have posted snaps from holidays to Dubai and Italy, as well as their visit across the pond to see Ashley's family in Phoenix, Arizona. Ashley said last year: 'American men are overwhelming, they are too much. I'm like, you need to calm down.' And she is not the only Pussycat Doll singer to fall for a British man. Hawaiian Nicole Scherzinger, 47, is engaged to 40-year-old Scottish former rugby player Thom Evans. And Missouri-born Kimberly Wyatt has been married to singer Max Rogers, both 43, since 2014. Nathan Louis-Fernand and Rachel Zegler 8 Snow White actress Rachel is dating Londoner Nathan SHE is currently taking the West End by storm as the leading lady in musical Evita. But off-stage, Rachel is making sweet, sweet music with co-star and back-up dancer Nathan. The 24-year-old has temporarily relocated to London for the show – and it seems the New Jersey-born star is enjoying the local delights. The Snow White actress was pictured kissing Londoner Nathan, 27, last month at Sabrina Carpenter's headline gig at the BST Hyde Park Music Festival on July 6. In the weeks since, Rachel has posted snaps of Louis on her Instagram, including a blurry photo of them embracing one another and another of him kissing her cheek. The pair were also seen walking Rachel's dog in London's Primrose Hill two weeks ago, with Louis wrapping his arm around the actress.
