It's imperative to ask who shapes the judges & how: Justice Surya Kant
The top court judge was speaking at the book launch of 'Shaping the Judges', honouring the life of professor Balram Gupta, at the Chandigarh Judicial Academy, Sector 43, on Saturday evening.
Calling the book a remarkable tribute to professor Gupta, Justice Surya Kant said the judge must not be just a working mechanic. 'A mason lays brick after brick without caring how a building is built. A judge, on the other hand, must be an architect thinking of the way the building has come for the future generations. His life will continue to inspire them,' he added.
Titled 'Shaping the Judges: Essays in Honour of Dr Balram K Gupta', the volume compiles thought-provoking essays from India's leading judicial minds, including 10 sitting Supreme Court judges. Among them, Justice Surya Kant's piece — 'Humour in Judgment Writing' — makes the case for letting wit breathe in black-letter law.
The book has been edited and introduced by Gupta's daughter professor Shruti Bedi and is a personal and scholarly tribute to her father who is a noted jurist and mentor. His decades-long influence on judicial training, ethics and legal academia is palpable throughout the collection, which brings together contributions from judges, scholars and legal philosophers who have crossed paths with him or been shaped by him.
Professor Bedi is a professor of law and director at the University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University. An internationally recognised legal scholar, she is an international fellow at the National Institute of Military Justice, Washington DC, and a visiting professor at Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia. She also serves as the director of the Centre for Constitution and Public Policy.
'From my formative years in Chandigarh, I know firsthand that almost everyone has a fond memory in connection with professor Gupta's articulation and depth of legal acumen,' said Justice Kant.
'Beyond the courtroom, professor Gupta's pivotal stint at both the National Judicial Academy and then at Chandigarh Judicial Academy, apart from his plethora of teaching roles, all cement his position as a human being in the legal and judicial landscape of India,' he said.
Chief justice of Punjab and Haryana high court, Justice Sheel Nagu, and high court Justice Manjari Nehru Kaul were among the dignitaries present at the event.

Thousands march in Kolhapur demanding elephant Mahadevi's return to Nandani Jain mutt
Kolhapur: Thousands of people participated in a 45km walk from Nandani in Shirol tehsil of Kolhapur district to the collector's office in Kolhapur city on Sunday to hand over a petition addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, seeking steps to bring back elephant Mahadevi from Gujarat's Jamnagar facility to the Nandani Jain mutt. Taking cognisance of the padyatra, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis declared in Amravati that the stakeholders would be called for discussion on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Vantara, the top officials of which recently visited Kolhapur and met the mutt's seer, issued a public statement on Saturday on its social media handle stating that a direct dialogue has been opened with Jain mutt and the swami of the mutt. "Together, we are exploring, through legal and veterinary guidance, all possibilities for Madhuri's (Mahadevi's) future, including a peaceful resolution that prioritises both her well-being and the feelings of the community," the statement read. Hatakangangle's Shiv Sena MP Dhairyasheel Mane said there is a possibility that a high-powered committee will be set up to make legal suggestions to get Mahadevi back. He said that already the legal experts from Vantara, Peta, and Nandani's mutt are discussing the legal aspect since there is a Supreme Court order. A process to file a review petition in the SC needs to be started. "To find a middle ground, the discussions are on whether Vantara can set up a similar enclosure at Nandani, where Mahadevi and elephants from nearby can be kept, and the facilities provided in Vantara can be made available in this enclosure. We need to ensure the balance between the care of the animal and the tradition observed for centuries. Feelings of the devotees should not be hurt," said Mane. Delhi Chief Minister On Air Quality Dipping To 74 For The First Time In A Decade
New Delhi: Citing the latest Air Quality Index of 74, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to reduce the city's pollution, and claimed that for the first time in a decade, the index has come down to such a satisfactory level. Inaugurating a "Jan Seva Kendra" in the Greater Kailash Assembly constituency, the Chief Minister said, "Apart from cleaning the air, we are also committed to cleaning the Yamuna and ending the mountains of garbage." She said her government, after taking note of the public concerns over the proposed ban on end-of-life (EOL) vehicles, approached the court and got a stay on the ban till November 1. "Going forward, bringing the public's voice to every platform, addressing their needs and demands, is our responsibility. As this is not the same government that only made hollow promises. Today's government is genuinely working to reduce Delhi's pollution," she said. CM Gupta said she aspires to make the city so beautiful and habitable that people are not forced to shift out of here. Calling her government's decision to allow commercial establishments to operate 24x7 historic, the CM said, "The licensing process is also going to be simplified and replaced with a single-window system." The CM slammed the earlier AAP government and legislators, saying, "Earlier, MLAs remained confined to their offices and homes. But each MLA of the BJP is now working tirelessly for the public." At an earlier event, she said the government is aiming to ensure that the bed per 1,000 patient ratio should improve to 5 from the current level of around 2.7. CM Gupta also announced her government's plans to introduce a PPP model for purchasing medical equipment in hospitals and complete the development of the 24 hospitals whose construction was suspended midway by the previous government. Later, taking to the social media platform X, the CM said, "Today, the Jan Seva Kendra was inaugurated in the Greater Kailash Assembly constituency and dedicated to public service." "This centre will serve as an effective medium for resolving the problems of the common people, providing information about the schemes of the Central and State Governments, and delivering prompt assistance to those in need, in line with the commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to service and good governance," she wrote. "The BJP's double-engine government is committed to ensuring that development, service, and rights reach the last person in line in a time-bound manner," she wrote.
