UK's ‘most welcoming city' also voted one of the most haunted
A Cheshire village has earned the title of the United Kingdom's most welcoming city – despite also being ranked one of the most haunted.
Booking.com has praised Chester for its 'strong sense of community' and 'mysterious past' in its annual Traveller Review Awards.
The awards are based on feedback from customers who have used the online platform to book accommodation, car rentals or taxis.
Meanwhile, 2,000 people who believe in ghosts ranked Chester as the UK's most haunted city, with 15 per cent of respondents casting their vote for the Cheshire destination.
Other cities ranked among the most haunted in the UK were York, Edinburgh, Bath, and Glasgow.
The survey revealed a growing interest in haunted travel experiences. More than 40 per cent of those polled expressed a willingness to stay in haunted accommodations, with nearly 20 per cent actively seeking out such experiences.
Meanwhile, 38 per cent of respondents said they would find the presence of a friendly spirit in their hotel room reassuring.
Chester caters to this intrigue with a variety of historic hotels and tours marketed for their haunted history.
Establishments like The Pied Bull and experiences like the Dark Chester Tour, which delves into tales of witches, plagues, and poltergeists, offer visitors a glimpse into the city's spectral side.
Booking.com regional manager Ryan Pearson said: 'Chester is a city that perfectly blends warmth and history, making it one of the most welcoming destinations in the UK.
'With its charming, cobbled streets, historic architecture and a strong sense of community, it's no surprise that visitors feel at home.
'But beyond its friendly atmosphere, Chester also has a rich and mysterious past, earning it a reputation as one of the most haunted cities in the country.'
The survey was carried out by research company OnePoll in February.

According to TravelSupermarket, the holiday comparison website, prices of a holiday to Larnaca have fallen by £495 per person. The average price in 2024 was £1,292.04 and in 2025 is £797.97 - a 38 per cent decrease. Flights from the UK take just over four hours and you can book flights with Ryanair from £34.99. There's another place a little further afield that Peter described as 'a kids' paradise' - as he discovers the world's most child-friendly holiday destination. Greek hotel hits back after gran complained there was no English food and they only did chips on one day
A hotel on island of Corfu has hit back at a grandmother who swore she would never return because they didn't serve British food. Susan Edwards, 69, went on what she hoped would be a dream all-inclusive holiday at the Lido Corfu Sun Hotel. But the Greek resort – roughly 1,600 miles away from England – didn't serve any English food. She flew to the hotel in May with her daughter and three cousins at a cost of around £750 each. However, she said conditions were horrendous from the minute they arrived. The all-inclusive drinks on offer only included wine, lager, ouzo or brandy, meaning she had to pay extra for her Bacardi and coke. Susan, from Westerhope, Newcastle, says that she could not eat a lot of what was on offer due to her ulcerative colitis – a condition that is not caused by diet, but can be helped by avoiding certain foods. But the hotel boss has defended what they had on offer, branding her claims as 'false and disrespectful'. Manager Makis Triantafyllos told The Sun the food service is 'generous and diverse, offering fresh salads, fruits, hot and cold dishes daily'. He said: 'Targeting a hotel with excellent ratings (8+/10 on and 4.3/5 on Google) and many loyal, returning guests, based solely on questionable accusations, is both unfair and damaging.' Makis added Susan even complained to staff about the weather while she was there, and was 'sarcastic and dismissive'. Susan allegedly complained about not having a second key for the room she shared with her daughter, but the manager said this was taken off of her after 'it was used solely to keep the electricity running – leaving the air conditioning on 24 hours a day, even with open windows and the room unoccupied'. To be fair to Susan, the hotel's TripAdvisor page shows that she is not the only disgruntled holiday maker at the Lido Corfu Sun Hotel. In May alone, five out of the six reviews gave one-star reviews with titles like 'good luck', 'absolutely disgusting', 'don't go', and 'close this hotel down'.
