Evacuations lifted in Bland County, wildfire 35% contained
BLAND COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – A wildfire in Bland County caused many to evacuate after flames broke out on Thursday, March 28.
According to the Virginia Department of Forestry, the fire is on Laurel Fork Road and East River Mountain Road and was about 200 acres in size and 35% contained.
Seasonal 4 PM Burning Law begins Feb. 15
Bland County Emergency Services said that residents who were evacuated were able to return to their homes later on in the evening on Thursday.
The VDF say State Forestry crews will continue to stay in the area along Laurel Folk Road.

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Widely scattered showers and storms will continue this evening before activity winds down past sunset. A few storms may be on the strong to severe side as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 10 P.M. for central and southside Virginia. Damaging wind gusts are the main threat; however, large hail and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. A Tornado Watch is also in effect to the northeast that includes Nelson county. Clouds will also clear out a bit into tomorrow morning with overnight low temperatures still warm and humid in the mid 60s. Some patchy fog may be possible overnight as well. Tomorrow, we will be in between two fronts with partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies for the day with temperatures remaining warm in the 80s. In the late afternoon to evening hours, it is possible that we may see a few isolated showers or storms, but most of the area will stay dry. Ahead of the next cold front that will pass through, scattered showers and a few storms will be possible Monday night into early Tuesday morning. A Marginal Risk (1/5) for severe weather is outlined over the region in case an isolated storm or two becomes strong to severe. Damaging wind gusts would be the main threat. As the front passes through, any rain or storms will push east with it into Tuesday as we begin to dry out. High pressure will move in for Wednesday and Thursday with mostly sunny skies and dry weather. Temperatures will warm up into the mid-to-upper 80s near 90 degrees by Friday. Pinpoint Weather: Scattered storms tomorrow with an isolated severe threat
ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — A few showers or storms may linger across the region into the overnight hours. Conditions will be mild with lows in the mid 60s under mostly cloudy skies. We will likely begin the day tomorrow with mostly cloudy skies and a few showers around. Into the afternoon, temperatures will warm up in the upper 70s to mid 80s under a mix of sun and clouds. With a frontal boundary still over the region, there will be the chance for hit or miss showers and storms in the afternoon to early evening hours. The best coverage for storms will likely be along and east of the blue Ridge. A few storms may be strong to severe as there is a Slight Risk (2/5) outlined over the Piedmont with a Marginal Risk (1/5) elsewhere. The main threat will likely be damaging wind gusts; however, hail and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. The area with the best chance for severe storms will be from Central Virginia to Southside. As another front swings through, a few showers and storms will be possible late in the day Monday into the night where an isolated storm or two may be strong to severe with damaging wind gusts. A Marginal Risk (1/5) for severe weather is outlined over the region. Isolated storms remain possible on Tuesday before drier air moves in Wednesday into Thursday where weather conditions will just be warm with sun and clouds. ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — A low-pressure system will move through the Carolinas, bringing more clouds and a few rain showers to Southwest and Central Virginia on Thursday. The region can expect mostly to partly cloudy skies on Thursday. Widely-scattered rain showers are possible, more so along and east of the Blue Ridge; however, not everyone will see rain. Rumbles of thunder are possible, but severe weather is not anticipated. Due to the additional cloud cover, temperatures won't be as warm. Highs will range from the mid-70s into the lower 80s. A frontal system will approach the region toward the end of the week. Isolated showers and storms are possible Friday afternoon and evening, with the best chance along and west of the Blue Ridge. A few storms may pack a punch, capable of producing gusty winds and hail. Temperatures will rise into the 80s under a mix of sun and clouds. Rain coverage will increase on Saturday as the front draws closer; scattered showers and storms will be possible area-wide. Isolated strong to severe storms may produce strong winds and hail, so stay weather-aware. Highs will be in the upper 70s and 80s. Partly cloudy skies will be overhead. Showers and thunderstorms remain possible into Sunday. When it's not raining, skies will be variably cloudy. Temperatures will warm up into the upper 70s and lower/middle 80s.
