Wind-driven brush fire scorches 75 acres in Galax
GALAX, Va. (WFXR) – Galax Fire Department responded to a 75-acre brush fire on 89 South near the North Carolina Border on Wednesday. Crews were assisted by Skull Camp Fire and upon arrival, found a wind-driven fire on steep terrain. Glade Creek Volunteer Fire Department and Cherry Lane Fire were also on the scene to attack the head of the fire off Oak Ridge Lane in Virginia. Seasonal 4 PM Burning Law begins Feb. 15 A dozer was brought on scene by the Virginia Department of Forestry and North Carolina Forestry Department using the Galax Police Department drone for mapping. Handlines were installed to help North Carolina air crews drop water on the fire from local ponds. The brush fire was under control about 7 p.m. and crews cleared the scene around 8 p.m. According to the Galax Fire Department, the cause of the fire is suspected to be from a discarded cigarette. Evacuations lifted in Bland County, wildfire 35% contained
BLAND COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – A wildfire in Bland County caused many to evacuate after flames broke out on Thursday, March 28. According to the Virginia Department of Forestry, the fire is on Laurel Fork Road and East River Mountain Road and was about 200 acres in size and 35% contained. Seasonal 4 PM Burning Law begins Feb. 15 Bland County Emergency Services said that residents who were evacuated were able to return to their homes later on in the evening on Thursday. The Danville Fire Department wants to warn residents that fires spread faster than expected, and stopping to grab things can leave you stuck or not able to see as smoke can fill the home quickly. Myth: 'If my house is on fire, I have plenty of time to grab a few things before I leave.' Seasonal 4 PM Burning Law begins Feb. 15 Fact: A fire can double in size every 30 seconds! You may have less than 2 minutes to escape safely. Every second counts—get out immediately and leave belongings behind! Consider the following tips to stay safe in case of a fire: Here's what to do to stay safe: Make an escape plan – Know two ways out of every room and practice it with your family. Get low and go – Smoke rises, so stay close to the ground where the air is clearer. Close doors behind you – This slows the fire's spread. Active wildfire in Pulaski County closes Millers Creek Road, 5 acres
PULASKI COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The Pulaski County Emergency Management is reporting an active wildfire in the Millers Creek Road area near Gatewood. Units are on scene and are working to contain the fire and Millers Creek Road will be closed until further notice. Seasonal 4 PM Burning Law begins Feb. 15 Smoke may be seen and smelled by residents throughout the county today. No homes are threatened at this time and there are no reported injuries. Roanoke Fire and EMS put out brush fire on Yellow Mountain Road
ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – The Roanoke Fire and EMS Department responded to a report of a brush fire in the area of Yellow Mountain Road on March 17. Crews responded near Yellow Mountain Road at Wellington Drive around 10:39 p.m. on Monday. Once at the scene, firefighters began working to extinguish the blaze. Seasonal 4 PM Burning Law begins Feb. 15 The fire impacted around an acre of land and the scene was cleared around 1:30 p.m. No injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation.
