New Delhi [India], July 9 (ANI): India's deal-making landscape cooled in Q2 2025, with overall deal volumes and values taking a hit amid ongoing global instability, according to Grant Thornton Bharat's latest Dealtracker report.India Inc recorded 582 transactions (including IPOs and QIPs) worth USD 17 billion, down 13 per cent in volume and a sharp 48 per cent in value from the previous quarter. The decline was largely driven by geopolitical and macroeconomic headwinds, including the Iran-Israel conflict, US policy uncertainty, and the prolonged Russia-Ukraine war. The report further reveals that domestic M&A saw significant deceleration, with only one billion-dollar deal, Sumitomo Mitsui's USD 1.57 billion investment in YES Bank, compared to four such deals in Q1.Still, some sectors and segments showed signs of resilience. Private equity held relatively steady with 357 deals totalling USD 7.4 billion, supported by 18 high-value investments. Warburg Pincus and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority's USD 862 million infusion into IDFC FIRST Bank was the largest PE transaction of the quarter.Public markets reflected cautious optimism. While IPO volumes dropped for the third consecutive quarter, June saw renewed interest with major listings like Leela Hotels (USD 407 million) and Ather Energy (USD 343 million). QIPs also held firm, raising USD 2.2 billion, with the banking sector contributing nearly half the total.Sectoral trends revealed a shift in investor focus. Banking and financial services led in value with USD 4.5 billion across 73 deals. Infrastructure followed with USD 1.2 billion, buoyed by major investments in road and urban development. Meanwhile, manufacturing achieved record volumes, driven by favourable policy momentum, despite a decline in deal value.Shanthi Vijetha, Partner at Grant Thornton Bharat, noted, 'Despite a challenging quarter, the steady pace in private equity, emergence of unicorns, and green shoots in public markets underscore investor confidence in India's long-term fundamentals.'With geopolitical pressures expected to ease and domestic growth drivers intact, the report projects a rebound in deal activity in the second half of 2025. Investors are likely to remain focused on scalable, tech-enabled, and consumer-centric businesses as they navigate global uncertainties. (ANI)

Jaishankar urges Russian companies to engage ‘more intensively' with India despite Trump tariff threat

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar encouraged Russian companies to engage "more intensively" with their Indian counterparts despite the US imposing a 50% tariff on India for buying Russian oil. Jaishankar noted India's rapidly growing economy and initiatives like 'Make in India' that have opened up new windows for foreign businesses. He said that these dimensions represent an invitation for Russian companies to engage more. "An India with a GDP of USD 4 trillion plus growing at 7% for the foreseeable future has an obvious need for large resources from dependable sources. In some cases, it could be assured supplies of essential products, fertiliser, chemicals, and machinery, being good examples. Its rapidly growing infrastructure offers business openings to enterprises with an established track record in their own country," Jaishankar was quoted by news agency ANI as saying. 'The 'Make in India' and other such initiatives have opened up new windows for foreign businesses. The modernisation and the urbanisation of India generate their own demands, flowing from shifts in consumption and lifestyle,' the minister said. "Each of these dimensions represent an invitation for Russian companies to engage more intensively with their Indian counterparts. Our endeavour is to encourage them to rise to that challenge," he added. Mentioning that India and Russia have nurtured one of the steadiest relationships between major nations, Jaishankar pushed for more "strenuous efforts" to diversify and balance trade between both nations. 'India and Russia have nurtured one of the steadiest relationships between major nations in current times is now widely recognised. However, that did not automatically translate into significant economic cooperation,' Jaishakar said. "Our trade basket remains limited and till recently, so did our trade volume. It may have grown in recent years, but then, so too has the trade deficit. Both the diversification and balancing of trade now urgently mandate more strenuous efforts on our part. At the end of the day, they are essential not just to reach higher trade targets but even to sustain the existing levels," he said. Jaishankar pushed for deeper cooperation to promote growth and accelerate development and expressed India's willingness to contemplate more investments, joint ventures and other forms of collaboration. 'It is reasonably evident that there is much that India and Russia can do for each other in promoting growth and accelerating development. What we seek to do as Governments is to provide the guidance and create conditions for economic activities to take place,' he said. "Clearly much centres around trade but there is growing willingness to contemplate more investments, joint ventures and other forms of collaboration. First DPM Manturov and I are here amongst you to encourage those processes. We want to send a clear message that an enduring strategic partnership must have a strong and sustainable economic component." he said. Further speaking about India signing Terms of Reference (ToR) for the India-Eurasian Economic Union on a Free Trade Agreement, Jaishankar said," We have today concluded the Terms of Reference for the India-Eurasian Economic Union FTA. That will surely make a difference when concluded." 'We spoke about motivating joint ventures in key areas where the demand is already established. Some initiatives of significant investment levels were also spoken about. Our skilling and mobility endeavours have started to take off. The desire to improve connectivity is also expressed through multiple options,' he said. "But in the final analysis, what we really need is for businesses to step forward confidently. Not just that, also ensure that there is a close collaboration between what Governments are discussing and businesses are planning," he added. Jaishankar positive push to increase trade with Russia comes after US levied an ad valorem duty of 25 per cent on Indian goods, but has announced an additional 25 per cent tariff that will take effect from August 27, raising the total duty to 50 per cent.

Australian shares hit fresh high on mining and banks boost

Aug 21 (Reuters) - Australian shares rose to a record high on Thursday, driven by miners and banks, while investors awaited U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech at the Jackson Hole symposium on Friday to gauge the interest rate trajectory. The S&P/ASX 200 index was up 0.6% at 8,966.80, as of 0043 GMT, after touching a fresh high of 8,973.70 earlier in the session. The benchmark has gained 2.6% so far this month, hitting multiple record highs as risk sentiment improved due to a slew of factors including an interest rate cut and positive corporate earnings. Investors around the globe are focussed on whether Powell will push back against market expectations for a rate cut next month when he speaks at the Fed's Jackson Hole symposium on Friday, following a weak jobs report for July. Traders are currently pricing in around an 82% chance of a 25-basis-point rate cut in September, according to the CME Fedwatch tool. Back in Australia, investors focussed on corporate earnings. Australia-listed shares of James Hardie deepened their rout from Wednesday, falling as much as 9.6% to A$28.92, their lowest level since January 20, 2023. The fibre cement maker on Wednesday flagged a bleak outlook for fiscal 2026 and forecast earnings below street view. Whitehaven Coal fell as much as 4.2% to a one-month low of A$6.160, as the coal miner's annual profit declined by more than half. Miners rose 1%, with BHP and Rio Tinto up 0.1% and 0.9%, respectively. Financials climbed 0.3%, with the "big four" banks rising between 0.1% and 0.7%. New Zealand's benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index rose 0.4% to 13,126.80. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand said the effect of interest rate cuts on the local economy had been slower than expected, with tariff threats impacting business and consumer confidence.
