Police investigate sabotage claims by UK activists against ‘fossil fuel finance'

The Guardian4 hours ago
The City of London police are investigating claims by environmental activists to have carried out acts of sabotage on the offices of major insurers and financial institutions.
Activist group Shut the System said its supporters had cut cables and glued electrical service cabinets at JP Morgan Chase and Allianz, in what it described as the start of 'a period of sustained sabotage' against fossil fuel finance.
The group also claimed to have targeted the Northampton HQ of Barclaycard, saying its activists had cut the 5G cable to the communications mast serving the building.
Shut the System distributed photographs purporting to show its supporters carrying out the actions. Northampton police said they had not received any report of vandalism.
Supt Jo Cash of the City of London police, said: 'We are aware of a social media post by Shut the System, which alleges that criminal damage has been caused to infrastructure in the City of London.
'We have had no reports of any criminal activity at this time, but we're speaking to those companies mentioned in the post and the wider business community. Inquiries are ongoing.'
Shut the System said it targeted JP Morgan because it was 'ranked the world's largest banking investor in fossil fuels', while Barclays was targeted because it was Europe's largest.
Allianz was targeted, according to Shut the System, because it is the sixth biggest insurer of fossil fuel projects and also insures Elbit Systems, the Israeli arms company. A Shut the System spokesperson said: 'I am enraged by the financial sector's continued support for deadly industries.
''Just doing our job' wasn't an excuse in world war 2 and it isn't today. They have a choice of which industries they finance. I cannot bear to stand idly by while those in power continue to exacerbate global problems just so the wealthy few can make increased profits.
'It is unhinged, psychopathic greed at the expense of billions of people.'
The group says it is calling for financial institutions to stop all finance and insurance for fossil fuel expansion immediately; adopt 1.5C-aligned emissions-reduction targets for oil, gas, and coal; demand robust 1.5C-aligned transition plans for all existing fossil fuel clients; protect Indigenous peoples' and human rights; and scale up financing for a just and fair transition. If the financial sector ignores their demands, then by October they will escalate further, the group said.
JP Morgan and Barclays were contacted for comment. A spokesperson for Allianz said there was no disruption or impact on its business operations.
Shut the System previously targeted insurance companies in the City in January, sabotaging fibre optic cables in an action that one cybersecurity expert said caused a 'significant slowdown of internet speed' in the district.
Its clandestine tactics are a departure from those of Extinction Rebellion and its successors Insulate Britain and Just Stop Oil, for whom accountability for their actions was a key part of their modus operandi.
A number of supporters of Just Stop Oil have received lengthy sentences after a crackdown on environmental activism that has included a number of draconian new laws passed and stiffer sentences handed down to direct action protesters.
Shut the System's spokesperson said: 'We have been forced underground by draconian anti-protest laws. The British state has recently shown how much they are willing to suppress peaceful protest.
'History shows direct action and sabotage are highly effective so we cannot stop while the climate emergency wages on and we see the most hopeful path forward is to operate beyond the state's reach.'

Free speech row as man arrested after holding sign that had words 'Palestine' and 'action' written on it outside Kneecap court hearing

A free speech row has erupted after a man holding a provocative pro-Palestine sign was arrested outside Westminster Magistrates Court during a demonstration in support of Irish rap trio Kneecap. The Metropolitan Police were on Wednesday accused of 'over-zealous policing' after a protester holding a sign containing the words ' Palestine ' and 'action' was detained by officers. It is the latest free speech challenge the police have faced following the proscription of campaign group Palestine Action. Toby Young, co-founder of the Free Speech Union, remarked: 'This isn't quite as bad as the police arresting someone for holding up a sign saying "Plasticine Action", but it's excessive nonetheless. 'The over-zealous policing of pro-Palestinian protestors risks turning anti-terrorism legislation into a joke.' The homemade sign at the centre of this latest controversy stated: 'If you're looking at Palestine and think there should be no action, you're on the wrong side of the genocide.' The words 'Palestine' and 'action' were coloured in black, green and red (the colours of the Palestinian flag) compared with the blue and orange colouring of the rest of the letters - meaning the words clearly stood out. Direct-action protest group Palestine Action was banned by the UK Government on July 5 after supporters of the organisation damaged two Voyager aircrafts at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire. Its proscription has prompted widespread protest and the arrests of hundreds of demonstrators who have routinely sat in Parliament Square holding signs which state: 'I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action.' There has also been increasing confusion from police regarding the exact threshold for a criminal offence. Earlier this week, Miles Pickering was arrested and then de-arrested for wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the words 'plasticine action'. Last night, the Metropolitan confirmed they had arrested a man 'on suspicion of supporting a proscribed terrorist group, Palestine Action, in Marylebone Road'. Responding to the controversial arrest on Instagram, Palestine Lobby, a pro-Palestine advocacy group dedicated to campaigning for Palestinian rights, wrote: 'This is an unacceptable misuse of power.' The demonstration this morning was in response to the trial of Liam Og O hAnnaidh - a musician for the band Kneecap. Mo Chara, whose real name is Liam Og O hAnnaidh, is facing a terrorism charge after allegedly displaying a Hezbollah flag at a concert in London Mr O hAnnaidh, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, is accused of displaying a flag in support of the terrorist group Hezbollah at a gig in November last year 'in such a way or in such a circumstance as to arouse reasonable suspicion that he is a supporter of a proscribed organisation'. A decision over whether he will stand trial for this alleged offence was postponed until late September.

Two arrested after ‘famous' ice-cream man fatally stabbed in north-west London

Two people have been arrested after an ice-cream man was fatally stabbed in broad daylight in north-west London. The Metropolitan police said they received reports of a stabbing in Monks Park, Wembley shortly after 6pm on Tuesday. Medics treated a 38-year-old man for stab wounds before he died at the scene, the force said. A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder early on Wednesday. A 31-year-old woman was also arrested at the scene for conspiracy to murder. Both remain in custody. Local resident Asim Mahmood Butt, 39, said he was a childhood friend of the victim, who he described as a 'famous ice-cream guy' in the area. Butt told the PA news agency that the victim began selling ice-cream 'about a year ago' and his van, which was parked on the road at the time of the incident, was well known locally for featuring a large teddy bear. Another witness, who spoke to PA on the condition of anonymity, said the ice-cream van was towed away from the scene in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The victim's family has been informed of his death and are being provided with specialist support, the Met said. DCI Paul Waller said: 'Our thoughts remain with the victim's family and friends at this hugely difficult time.' He added that people may see a rise in the number of officers in the local area as the police investigation continues. A blue forensics tent and a number of Met officers could be seen inside a police cordon in Monks Park on Wednesday afternoon. Revealed: Man United's Carlos Baleba alternative has an ARSENAL tattoo on his arm and grew up idiolising former Gunners star

A transfer target for Manchester United could find himself in an awkward situation should the Red Devils pursue a move for the star this summer. Sporting captain Morten Hjulmand has reportedly been identified as a potential alternative to Brighton 's Carlos Baleba, who United decided not to bid for in this transfer window amid concerns over his £120million price tag. Hjulmand has been on the club's radar and Ruben Amorim has a good relationship with the Denmark international as a result of their time together with the Portuguese side. But the 26-year-old may need time to win over United's fans as he grew up as an avid Arsenal fan and has the Gunners' club crest tattooed on his upper left arm. Speaking to Portuguese outlet Record last year, Hjulmand, who idolised Patrick Vieira as a child, revealed his devotion for Arsenal had been passed down from his father. 'My dad supported Arsenal and we watched games together when we were younger,' he said. He will also be difficult to acquire this summer thanks to a combination of his expiring release clause and the Portuguese champions' unwillingness to sell another first team star in the window. According to Record, the £68m (€80m) release clause in the midfielder's contract expired on June 15 and Sporting, whose £64m sale of star striker Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal was fraught, have decided to close the door on any further exits. United have spent more than £200m on a new frontline, signing Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, but are thought to be keen on strengthening the midfield. Baleba had been identified as their No 1 target, with the 21-year-old highly admired at Old Trafford, along with Adam Wharton at Crystal Palace. United began talks over Baleba but failed to make progress with any deal and last week abandoned their pursuit of the Cameroonian.
