AMD CEO on taking on Nvidia: People used to think that $$500 billion was a very large number, and now ...

AMD appears to be aiming to do what Intel has not been able to: take on AI chip giant Nvidia. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) CEO Lisa Su announced the company's latest MI350 series AI processors, positioning them as formidable competitors to Nvidia's dominant chips in the rapidly growing AI accelerator market. Speaking at a company event in San Jose, California, Su projected the AI market to surpass $500 billion by 2028, revising her earlier estimate as demand continues to surge.
Though AMD remains a distant second to Nvidia in AI accelerators, it aims to start catching up with these new products. 'People used to think that $500 billion was a very large number,' she said in a briefing following her presentation. 'Now it seems well within grasp.'
AMD claims its MI355 chips outperform Nvidia's
The MI355 chips, which began shipping this month, boast a 35-fold performance increase over their predecessors and outperform Nvidia's offerings in speed, Su claimed. She highlighted that the chips deliver up to 40% more tokens per dollar, offering cost efficiency for customers. AMD also introduced the MI350 Series GPUs and the Helios AI Rack Scale solution, set for release next year, alongside a developer cloud access program to spur innovation through open architecture -- a contrast to Nvidia's approach.
Despite Nvidia's entrenched position and high demand for its GPUs, which often face long wait times, AMD is gaining traction. Su noted that seven of the top 10 AI customers, including India's Reliance Jio, are deploying AMD Instinct Accelerators. The MI350 series, now in production with a fourfold compute increase over the prior generation, will be commercially available from Q3.
Su's presentation featured discussions with industry leaders, including OpenAI's Sam Altman and executives from Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle, underscoring AMD's growing partnerships. While AMD trails Nvidia in the AI accelerator space, Su emphasized that the new chips signal a push to close the gap, restoring momentum after a February forecast of slower data center growth disappointed some analysts.
'People used to think $500 billion was a very large number,' Su said in a briefing. 'Now it seems well within grasp.' With its latest innovations, AMD is betting on open architecture and performance gains to challenge Nvidia's dominance in the AI revolution.

Microsoft confirms next-gen Xbox console with AMD partnership, multi-store support

Microsoft announced today that its next-generation Xbox console will feature AMD silicon and won't be restricted to a single game store, marking a significant shift in the company's gaming strategy. Xbox President Sarah Bond confirmed the development in a YouTube video, promising "an Xbox experience not locked to a single store or tied to one device." The tech giant has established a strategic multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across multiple gaming devices, including next-generation Xbox consoles for both living rooms and handheld gaming. This collaboration aims to deliver advanced graphics innovation and AI-enhanced gameplay while maintaining full compatibility with existing Xbox game libraries. Xbox breaks free from console-only gaming model Bond emphasized that Microsoft's vision centers on creating a gaming platform that follows players across all devices. The announcement comes days after Microsoft revealed its partnership with Asus to launch Xbox Ally handheld devices featuring a new full-screen Xbox experience running on Windows. This Windows-based approach allows access to multiple game stores, including Steam , signaling Microsoft's commitment to platform openness. Xbox + AMD: Powering the Next Generation of Xbox "This is all about building a gaming platform that's always with you, so you can play the games you want across devices anywhere you want," Bond stated. The company is working closely with its Windows team to position Windows as the premier gaming platform, supporting multiple storefronts and device types. Next-gen Xbox to preserve entire game library Microsoft has confirmed that next-generation Xbox consoles will maintain full backward compatibility with existing Xbox game libraries, addressing concerns raised after the Xbox Ally announcement. Unlike the Windows-based Xbox Ally devices, which can only run Xbox games with PC counterparts, the next-gen consoles will support the entire Xbox catalog. The partnership with AMD will focus on advancing gaming silicon technology to unlock deeper visual quality and immersive experiences enhanced by artificial intelligence. Microsoft's hardware investment spans consoles, handhelds, PC gaming, cloud services, and accessories, representing a comprehensive approach to next-generation gaming across multiple form factors and distribution channels. 7 Things You May Have Missed in the GTA 6 Second Trailer AI Masterclass for Students. Indian Air Force to get advanced indigenous smart anti-airfield weapon for fighter jet fleet

New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): In what would be a big success for indigenous weapon systems, the Indian Air Force is looking to acquire an advanced version of the Indigenous Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon, which would be fitted on almost the entire fighter jet fleet of the force, including the Su-30 MKI. A proposal from the Indian Air Force to get the satellite-guided version of the SAAW air launched glide bomb is expected to be discussed by the Defence Ministry soon. This would be able to hit targets with accuracy at 100 Km strike range, defence sources told ANI. SAAW, an indigenously designed and developed 120 kg class smart weapon developed by DRDO, is capable of engaging ground targets with high precision up to a range of 100 kms. The lightweight high precision guided bomb is one of the world-class weapons systems. SAAW is indigenously designed and developed by DRDO's Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad has been developed with an aim of engaging ground enemy airfield assets such as radars, bunkers, taxi tracks, and runways etc. The stand off weapon is similar to the stand off weapons used in the Balakot air strikes on targets in Pakistan. The proposal is coming up for discussion at a time when the Indian forces are looking for long range stand off weapon systems and have tasted success in a big way during Operation Sindoor against Pakistani terror and military targets. The SAAW is one of the successful projects carried out by the DRDO. The DRDO has also offered the SAAW missiles to the defence forces under the emergency procurement process to equip the forces rapidly for future conflicts. The Indian Air Force is looking to equip itself with multiple long-range weapon systems, including missiles and other systems. (ANI)
