Ex-NRL star James Roberts cleared of drugs, cash charges
In November, police charged the 2015 Dally M Centre Of The Year recipient with the prohibited possession of marijuana and suspected stolen goods, being $1400 in cash.
The charges related to an incident in which he was stopped by police in Matraville on July 30 last year.
On Monday morning, both charges were dismissed at Waverley Local Court, where Roberts did not appear.
Speaking outside court, Roberts' lawyer Najee Makhoul said his client was relieved to put this all behind him.
'The reason that [the charges were withdrawn,] simply put, was... that having cash is not an offence, and you're allowed to have cash,' Makhoul said.
'I know there's a big push to move towards a cashless society, but it's incumbent on the prosecution to be able to prove that anything in your custody that is stolen or unlawfully obtained, and they just have no evidence that it was obtained from unlawful means, and there was no suggestion that it was nefariously obtained.'
As for the drug possession charge, Makhoul said it related to 0.3 grams of cannabis leaf.

Footage has emerged of former Fox Sports reporter James Hooper's alleged drunken accident in Sydney. The prominent NRL reporter has been sacked by Fox Sports and subsequently stood himself down from his role with Triple M after being charged with high-range drinking offences. Paul Green, who lives right by the accident site, is heard on the footage and told the network what he had witnessed. 'He just tried to get out of there straight away,' Green alleged. 'Put the car in reverse to try to reverse off the car he was collected on and he couldn't get off. 'So he was not really coherent. He headed up the street, unfortunately for him he headed up the wrong way. 'We lost sight of him in the dark but then he turned around and that's when the police caught up to him at the roundabout down the bottom of the hill.' Hooper is alleged to have collided with three parked cars and returned a positive breath test of 0.253, more than five times the legal limit. Hooper was the chief rugby league reporter for Fox Sports, along with roles as a columnist for Fox Sports and a sideline reporter with Triple M. Southern Cross Austereo (SCA), which owns and operates Triple M, confirmed to Hooper has opted to cut ties with the network. 'Triple M acknowledges the decision of James Hooper to stand down from his commitments with the network,' SCA Head of Sports Content Ewan Giles said. 'We thank him for his contribution.' A statement from NSW Police read: 'At 7.30pm on Thursday, police were called to Allen Street, Leichhardt following reports of a crash. 'Officers attached to Leichhardt Highway Patrol attended to find a utility had collided with three parked cars before coming to a stop.' He has been charged with high-range drink-driving and three counts of damaged property and will appear in court on September 15. The decision from Fox Sports was effective immediately, with Hooper's final appearance on NRL 360 occurring on Wednesday night this week. Fox Sports' managing director Steve Crawley confirmed the news in a statement. 'James has been a great contributor since he joined us in 2016, but he's also battled some significant personal issues from time to time,' Crawley said. 'In speaking to him today, James also acknowledges that things need to change for him.' Hooper was approached by The Daily Telegraph for comment, stating: 'I've let the game of rugby league, my employers, my wife and kids down terribly. 'Clearly I'm not handling the tough side of the job. 'Hopefully this is the punch between the eyes that will set me straight.'

Man arrested in alleged $38m fraud scheme to remain in custody
A man allegedly involved in a massive $38m fraud scheme will remain in custody on remand after his arrest at a $37,000-a-month Barangaroo penthouse rental. Bing Li, one of two alleged ringleaders of the fraud scheme, was hauled out of a suite at Crown casino in Barangaroo on Thursday wearing a $6000 Louis Vuitton bomber jacket and marched through the forecourt to a waiting police van. The 38-year-old has been charged with a long list of offences, including 87 counts of deception, forgery and proceeds of crime charges. Police will allege he is responsible for a $12.9m fraud. In the Downing Centre Local Court on Friday, Mr Li's matter was briefly mentioned. A release application for Mr Li to be bailed was initially submitted to the court. However, it was later withdrawn, with Mr Li expected to remain in custody on remand ahead of his next court appearance. He will return to court on September 11. NSW Police began investigating a luxury 'ghost car' loan fraud scheme in January 2024 but now say the alleged scam run wider into large-scale personal, business and home loan fraud. In the early hours of Wednesday, police raided 10 properties, seizing two Bentleys, a Ferrari 360, cash, a gun and two Tasers, body armour and drugs. Speaking to the media at Parramatta Police Station, Detective Superintendent Gordon Arbinja said members of the alleged syndicate had 'lived an opulent lifestyle'. 'We know that the Barangaroo man had been renting a penthouse in Barangaroo worth $18m for $37,000 a month,' he said. 'Yesterday, when we went thorough a safety deposit box, we located over $1m worth of luxury items, including watches and jewellery and cash. 'We did ask one of the alleged offenders what they did for a living, and he told investigators that he was a professional gambler.' Meanwhile, the second alleged ringleader, a 34-year-old man from Seaforth, faces 107 similar allegations. Among the charges are 87 knowingly deal with proceeds of crime allegations, 19 counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception, and one count of participating in a criminal group. He was denied bail, and police allege he has committed a $4m fraud. Six people have already been arrested during this investigation, with the NSW Crime Commission seizing or restraining $18m in assets. Police put Wednesday's haul at $20m, taking the total value of seizures to $38m. The investigation began at the start of 2024 when police uncovered an alleged syndicate targeting vehicle financing companies in Sydney. The syndicate was allegedly using stolen personal information to apply for loans through various companies, for 'luxury 'ghost cars' that did not exist', the police spokesperson said. 'Ongoing investigations revealed the syndicate's operations extended well beyond car financing fraud to (alleged) large-scale personal, business and home loan fraud against multiple financial institutions.'

NRL player agents face bans after Port Macquarie schoolboy carnival fight
Two leading NRL player agents are facing six and nine-month bans and $25,000 in fines after allegedly being involved in an altercation at a schoolboy rugby league carnival. Chris Orr and Nash Dawson were hit with breach notices by the NRL on Thursday after an investigation into the incident during the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League Championships in 2024. Orr, who represents Storm star Jarrome Hughes and Newcastle recruit Dylan Brown, and Dawson, who manages Broncos duo Reece Walsh and Ezra Mam, were cited for breaching the NRL Accredited Player Agent Scheme rules and the Accredited Agents' Code of Conduct. In a statement, the NRL declared the agents were 'required to operate with high personal and professional standards' and failed to do so. They pair have five business days to respond to the breach notice. Rival player managers Mario Tartak and Matt Desira were issued notices last month for allegedly breaching NRL agent accreditation rules.
