Land Rover has unveiled the latest iteration of the Defender, featuring a few updates that cover various aspects of the vehicle. Specifically, these changes encompass styling, interior, and functional updates designed to enhance the vehicle's off-roading capabilities. All of these changes are aimed at improving its appeal to consumers. Even though the SUV is already successful in terms of consumer base, as it is one of the brand's best-selling modern vehicles.
The Land Rover Defender, in its latest iteration, has received design changes in its lighting elements. It now gets new signature detailing in the front headlamps and integrated fog lamps as standard. Similarly, the rear end of the SUV gets revised tail lights with smoked lenses that are well embedded in the body for a relatively cleaner look.

The bumpers have been enhanced with optimized surface treatments. The inserts on the bonnet and the side vents feature a new textured appearance, and the Defender-branded wheel caps have been updated with a glossy black look. There are also new 22-inch seven-spoke alloy wheel options along with new colour options. This list includes a new Patagonia White Matter exterior wrap for the Octa and all V8 models.
The extended list of accessories on the Defender offers a new expedition roof rack, crossbars, and enhanced underbody protection. The Octa also introduces the option of a winch rated for 4,500 kg, featuring a carbon fiber cover. Additionally, the Defender 130 includes an option for an integrated air compressor to help adjust tire pressures during off-road adventures.
Inside the cabin, you are welcomed by an introduced 13.1-inch touchscreen, increased from the previous 11.4-inch display in the outgoing Defender. Another key update is the launch of adaptive off-road cruise control. This system, developed from Land Rover's previous 'All Terrain Progress Control', enables drivers to select a comfort level while the vehicle autonomously handles throttle and braking on rough terrain. The driver is only responsible for steering.
The SUV continues to be sold with the same 90, 110, and 130 body styles with the same powertrain options. The list includes a 2.0-litre petrol, a 2.0-litre plug-in hybrid, a 3.0-litre diesel, a 5.0-litre supercharged V8, and a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. With all of these changes, the SUV has gone on sale in the UK and is expected to find its way to India by next year.

The government on Monday notified guidelines for its forward-looking scheme to enable fresh investments from global manufacturers in the electric cars segment and promote India as a global manufacturing hub for e-vehicles. To encourage global manufacturers such as US tech giant Tesla to invest under the scheme, the approved applicants will be allowed to import completely built-in units (CBUs) of electric four-wheelers with a minimum CIF (cost insurance and freight value) of $35,000 at reduced customs duty of 15 per cent for a period of 5 years from the date that the application is approved. Approved applicants would be required to make a minimum investment of Rs 4,150 crore in line with the provisions of the scheme. The maximum number of e-4Ws allowed to be imported at the reduced duty rate will be capped at 8,000 units per year. The carryover of unutilised annual import limits would be permitted. According to the notification, the maximum number of EVs to be imported under this scheme will be such that the maximum duty foregone per applicant will be limited to Rs 6,484 crore, or the committed investment of the applicant of a minimum of Rs 4,150 crore, whichever is lower. The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) issued under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Automobile and Auto Component (PLI Auto Scheme) would be followed to assess the DVA of the eligible product as required under the scheme. Certification of DVA of an eligible product manufactured in India by the approved applicant would be done by testing agencies approved by the Ministry of Heavy Industries . Investment should be made for the domestic manufacturing of the eligible product. In case the investment under the scheme is made on a brownfield project, a clear physical demarcation with the existing manufacturing facilities should be made, the notification states. Expenditure incurred on new plant, machinery, equipment and associated utilities, and engineering research and development ( ER&D ) would be eligible. The expenditure incurred on land will not be considered. However, buildings of the main plant and utilities will be considered as part of the investment provided it does not exceed 10 per cent of the committed investment, the notification further states. Expenditure incurred on charging infrastructure would be considered up to a maximum of 5 per cent of the committed investment, it explains. The applicant's commitment to set up manufacturing facilities, achievement of DVA, and compliance with conditions stipulated under the scheme shall be backed by a bank guarantee from a scheduled commercial bank in India equivalent to the total duty to be forgone, or Rs 4,150 crore, whichever is higher, during the scheme period. The bank guarantee should be valid at all times during the tenure of the scheme, the notification added. The scheme shall help to attract investments from global EV manufacturers and promote India as a manufacturing destination for e-vehicles. The scheme will also help put India on the global map for manufacturing of EVs, generate employment and achieve the goal of 'Make in India', according to the official statement. This landmark initiative is aligned with India's national goals of achieving net zero by 2070, fostering sustainable mobility, driving economic growth, and reducing environmental impact. It is designed to firmly establish India as a premier global destination for automotive manufacturing and innovation, the statement added.

Madhya Pradesh's high vehicle road tax is causing substantial revenue losses. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) has highlighted that customers in MP are purchasing vehicles from adjacent states with lower taxation rates. Ironically, despite repeated appeals to the state govt for tax reduction, no action was taken. MP is losing money on different types of vehicle sales. People who want fancy cars (costing over Rs. 20 Lakhs) are buying them in Chhattisgarh or Arunachal Pradesh. Why? Because the road tax is lower there. MP charges 16% road tax. FADA claimed that Chhattisgarh only charges 10%. Arunachal Pradesh has a fixed rate of Rs. 35,000. This difference is a big deal for expensive cars. Electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid vehicles also have tax issues. The road tax on two-wheeler EVs in MP went up from 1% to 4%. People want the govt to bring it back down. Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh have zero road tax on EVs. Chhattisgarh even gives subsidies of up to Rs. 15 Lakh on EVs and hybrid vehicles. This makes buying these vehicles much cheaper in Chhattisgarh, added FADA officials. Ambulance registrations are another problem. People prefer to register ambulances in Chhattisgarh. This is because MP charges 10% road tax on ambulances. Chhattisgarh has no road tax on them. This makes ambulances cheaper to register in Chhattisgarh. The way MP calculates road tax is also being questioned. Right now, road tax includes the GST (Goods and Services Tax). A suggestion was made to calculate the tax before GST is added. This would lower the amount of tax people pay. MP has a great location in the middle of India. This could make it a big logistics hub. The govt could offer incentives to car companies. This could help them deliver cars faster. It could also create more jobs in MP, said FADA officials. Fuel taxes are also a problem. MP has some of the highest VAT (Value Added Tax) rates on fuel in India. Because of this, truck drivers and others often fill up their tanks in other states. This means MP loses out on tax money. It also makes fuel more expensive for people who live in MP. The govt needs to take these issues seriously to "prevent tax revenue losses." It will help to "reduce the financial burden on MP's population." By fixing these tax problems, MP can keep more money in the state. FADA MP raised four crucial concerns. "These include advocating for lower road tax rates in MP, seeking a reduction in fuel VAT, highlighting MP's potential as a logistics hub due to its central location, and addressing the incorrect practice of road tax calculation on GST," said Chairperson FADA Madhya Pradesh , Ashish Pande. He added, "It's worth noting that MP's sales performance was significantly lower than the national average over the past 4 months, resulting in reduced revenue collection for the state, both in terms of GST and road tax. This needs immediate attention from the state govt." Transport department officials did not respond to the calls made to them.
