UNITED NATIONS (dpa): The UN Security Council is convening an emergency session on Sunday to discuss Israel's intentions to capture and occupy Gaza City.
The plan, approved by Israel's Security Cabinet on Friday, sparked international outcry. UN Secretary General António Guterres called it a "dangerous escalation" in the 22-month war in the Gaza Strip.
The European members of the Security Council - Denmark, France, Greece, the United Kingdom and Slovenia - called for the urgent meeting in New York.
According to the independent news site Security Council Report, all Security Council members except the United States supported the proposal.
During the session, which begins at 10 am (1400 GMT), member states will exchange views, and UN rapporteurs are expected to outline the possible consequences of seizing Gaza's main city.
Following the Israel's decision, Germany, the UK, Italy, New Zealand and Australia jointly rejected the plans to take control of Gaza City.
In a statement by their foreign ministries, they warned the offensive would worsen the humanitarian crisis, endanger hostages' lives, and could lead to massive civilian displacement.
They said that a two-state solution remains the only path to lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

Germany hopes Zelenskiy will be at Trump-Putin talks, chancellor says

BERLIN (Reuters) -German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he hopes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy will be involved at the Russia-U.S. summit. Merz said he will have a call with U.S. president Donald Trump on Sunday in an interview with public broadcaster ARD. 'We are preparing intensively at the European level together with the U.S. government for this meeting,' Merz said. 'And we hope and assume that the Ukrainian government and President Zelenskiy will be involved in this meeting." Zelenskiy won diplomatic backing from Europe and the NATO alliance on Sunday ahead of a Russia-U.S. summit this week where Kyiv fears Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump may try to dictate terms for ending the 3-1/2-year war. "We cannot accept that territorial issues are decided between Russia and America over the heads of Europeans and Ukrainians," Merz said. He added that there can be no peace that rewards Russia's aggressive actions and possibly encourages and emboldens further actions. (Reporting by Maria Martinez; Editing by Andrew Cawthorne)

6.1-magnitude earthquake strikes NW Türkiye's Balikesir province, damage reported

ISTANBUL, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Türkiye's northwestern province of Balikesir on Sunday, authorities said. The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) reported that the earthquake occurred in the Sindirgi district at 7:53 p.m. local time (1653 GMT). Footage aired by the NTV broadcaster showed a collapsed building, with people attempting to rescue those trapped beneath the rubble. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on the social media platform X that the quake, which was also felt in Istanbul and nearby provinces, prompted AFAD and all relevant institutions to immediately begin field inspections. "As of now, there are no reports of any adverse situation, and we are monitoring developments closely," he said.

UN official: Israel's Gaza plan risks 'another calamity'

UNITED NATIONS, United States: A UN official on Sunday warned the Security Council that Israel's plans to control Gaza City risked "another calamity" with far-reaching consequences, as Benjamin Netanyahu insisted his goal was not to occupy the territory. The United Nations Security Council held a rare emergency weekend meeting after Israel said its military would "take control" of Gaza City in a plan approved by Prime Minister Netanyahu's security cabinet that sparked a wave of global criticism. "If these plans are implemented, they will likely trigger another calamity in Gaza, reverberating across the region and causing further forced displacement, killings, and destruction," UN Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenca told the Security Council. Britain, a close ally of Israel which nonetheless pushed for an emergency meeting on the crisis, warned the Israeli plan risked prolonging the conflict. "It will only deepen the suffering of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. This is not a path to resolution. It is a path to more bloodshed," said British deputy ambassador to the UN James Kariuki. But Netanyahu said Sunday his country was "talking in terms of a fairly short timetable because we want to bring the war to an end," as he insisted Israel did not want to occupy Gaza. Outside the meeting at UN headquarters in New York, a small but noisy protest calling for an end to the conflict was met by a large police presence. Palestinian ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour said Friday that "this escalation by the Israeli government is going in total contradiction to the will of the international community." The US, a veto-wielding permanent member of the Security Council, is likely to seek to shield its staunch ally Israel from any practical measure of UN censure. Israel's ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, said ahead of the meeting that "Israel will not stop fighting for the release of all the hostages – and ensuring the safety and security of our citizens is our duty."
